RESUMO
A case of "epithelioid angiomatosis" detected in a homosexual patient with positive seric HIV is presented. The skin lesions cytoplasm rich, closed y clumped together, with scanty stromal compound. Warthin-Starry staining [correction of tintions] did not show Bacillus causing "cat scratch disease". We review and analyse the features of this type of proliferation in patients infected with HIV.

A man with previous addiction to parenteral drugs presented infection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with persistent generalised lymph node enlargement. Sixteen months after diagnosis, he developed intermediate-grade lymphoma of the stomach. Partial response was achieved by chemotherapy, and the patient presented pulmonary and meningeal tuberculosis which led him to exitus.

In 24 cases of thrombopenic purpura associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection the clinical, immunological and therapeutic features were evaluated. Thrombopenia resulted in clinical manifestations in 20 patients. Splenomegaly was found in only one fourth of patients. Antiplatelet antibodies were found in 9 patients, and thrombopenia was associated with anemia in 37% of cases and with leukopenia in 21%. Bone marrow examination showed megakaryocyte hyperplasia in two thirds of the patients. The major immunological abnormalities were an inverted helper/suppressor T lymphocytes ratio, a reduction in the number of helper T lymphocytes, polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, and increased serum concentrations of circulating immunocomplexes. The different therapeutic modalities, steroids, vincristine, danatrol and plasma exchange, resulted in short responses; only two patients had normal platelet counts. The median follow-up was 14 months; during this time three patients fulfilled the criteria of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

A study is made of the state of cell and humoral immunity in parenteral drug addicts both with and without genital warts. The results reveal alterations in the lymphocyte subpopulations, with a decrease in the T-helper/T-suppressor (T4+/T8+) ratio of both groups of patients. These alterations were more pronounced in those patients with genital warts (p less than 0.05). The alterations in humoral immunity, expressed as a hypergammaglobulinemia IgG and IgM, were similar in both groups. None of the immunological parameters were affected by the extension of the lesions, though the T4+/T8+ ratio was found to decrease with increasing length evolution of the lesions. It would be convenient to perform longitudinal studies of these preliminary data to evaluate the effect of human papilloma virus (HPV) on the immune system.
