RESUMO

Cross-country mountain biking is an Olympic sport discipline with high popularity among elite and amateur cyclists. However, there is a scarcity of data regarding the key determinants of performance, particularly in young cross-country cyclists. The aim of this study was to examine the physiological profile of youth national-level cross-country cyclists and to determine those variables that were able to best predict the performance in an official race. Ten youth cross-country cyclists of a national team underwent a complete evaluation that included anthropometric assessments, laboratory tests to evaluate the wattage at blood lactate thresholds and at maximal oxygen uptake (POVO2max), and field tests to make an in-depth power profile of the athletes. The data obtained in the above-mentioned tests was analysed along with total and partial race times during a competition belonging to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) calendar. In the present study, large and statistically significant correlations (r = -0.67 to -0.95, p ≤ 0.05) were found between maximal and submaximal indices of aerobic fitness and cycling performance, especially when they were normalised to body mass. A multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the wattage at 2 mmol/L, 4 mmol/L and POVO2max were able to explain 82% of the variance in total race time. In summary, the results of this study support the use of maximal and submaximal indices of aerobic power as predictors of performance in youth cross-country cyclists.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to describe the pacing distribution during 6 editions of the world cross-country championships. METHODS: Data from the 768 male runners participating from 2007 to 2013 were considered for this study. Blocks of 10 participants according to final position (eg, 1st to 10th, 11 to 20th, etc) were considered. RESULTS: Taking data from all editions together, the effect of years was found to be significant (F(5,266) = 3078.69, P < .001, ω² = 0.31), as well as the effect of blocks of runners by final position (F(4,266) = 957.62, P < .001, ω² = 0.08). A significant general decrease in speed by lap was also found (F(5,1330) = 2344.02, P < .001, ω² = 0.29). Post hoc analyses were conducted for every edition where several pacing patterns were found. All correlations between the lap times and the total time were significant. However, each lap might show different predicting capacity over the individual outcome. DISCUSSION: Top athletes seem to display different strategies, which allow them to sustain an optimal speed and/or kick as needed during the critical moments and succeed. After the first group (block) of runners, subsequent blocks always displayed a positive pacing pattern (fast to slow speed). Consequently, a much more stable pacing pattern should be considered to maximize final position. CONCLUSIONS: Top-10 finishers in the world cross-country championships tend to display a more even pace than the rest of the finishers, whose general behavior shows a positive (fast-to-slow) pattern.

An amperometric sensor for lactate quantification is presented. The developed biosensor requires only 0.2 U of lactate oxidase, which is immobilized in a mucin/albumin hydrogel matrix. By protecting the platinum surface with a Nafion membrane, typical interference related to negatively charged species such as ascorbic acid has been minimized to practically undetectable levels. Electrochemical properties associated with the Nafion membrane are assessed as a function of Nafion concentration. In a phosphate buffer solution of pH 7.0, linear dependence of the catalytic current upon lactate bulk concentration was obtained between 2 and approximately 1000 microM. A detection limit of 0.8 microM can be calculated considering 3 times the standard deviation of the blank signal divided by the sensitivity of the sensor. The lactate biosensor presents remarkable operational stability and sensitivity (0.537 +/- 0.007) mA.M(-1), where the error is the standard deviation of the slope calculated from the linear regression of the calibration curve of a fresh biosensor. In this regard, the sensor keeps practically the same sensitivity for 5 months, while the linear range decreases until an upper value of 0.8 mM is reached. Assays performed with whole blood samples spiked with 100 microM lactate gave (89 +/- 6)% of recovery.
