RESUMO

The only proposed observation of a discrete, hexacontatetrapole (E6) transition in nature occurs from the T_{1/2}=2.54(2)-min decay of ^{53m}Fe. However, there are conflicting claims concerning its γ-decay branching ratio, and a rigorous interrogation of γ-ray sum contributions is lacking. Experiments performed at the Australian Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility were used to study the decay of ^{53m}Fe. For the first time, sum-coincidence contributions to the weak E6 and M5 decay branches have been firmly quantified using complementary experimental and computational methods. Agreement across the different approaches confirms the existence of the real E6 transition; the M5 branching ratio and transition rate have also been revised. Shell model calculations performed in the full fp model space suggest that the effective proton charge for high-multipole, E4 and E6, transitions is quenched to approximately two-thirds of the collective E2 value. Correlations between nucleons may offer an explanation of this unexpected phenomenon, which is in stark contrast to the collective nature of lower-multipole, electric transitions observed in atomic nuclei.

RESUMO

The electric monopole (E0) transition strength ρ^{2} for the transition connecting the third 0^{+} level, a "superdeformed" band head, to the "spherical" 0^{+} ground state in doubly magic ^{40}Ca is determined via e^{+}e^{-} pair-conversion spectroscopy. The measured value ρ^{2}(E0;0_{3}^{+}→0_{1}^{+})=2.3(5)×10^{-3} is the smallest ρ^{2}(E0;0^{+}→0^{+}) found in A<50 nuclei. In contrast, the E0 transition strength to the ground state observed from the second 0^{+} state, a band head of "normal" deformation, is an order of magnitude larger ρ^{2}(E0;0_{2}^{+}→0_{1}^{+})=25.9(16)×10^{-3}, which shows significant mixing between these two states. Large-scale shell-model (LSSM) calculations are performed to understand the microscopic structure of the excited states and the configuration mixing between them; experimental ρ^{2} values in ^{40}Ca and neighboring isotopes are well reproduced by the LSSM calculations. The unusually small ρ^{2}(E0;0_{3}^{+}→0_{1}^{+}) value is due to destructive interference in the mixing of shape-coexisting structures, which are based on several different multiparticle-multihole excitations. This observation goes beyond the usual treatment of E0 strengths, where two-state shape mixing cannot result in destructive interference.

RESUMO

Anthropogenic radionuclides, like 236U and 239,240Pu, are present in the environment as a result of global fallout from nuclear weapons tests conducted in the 1950s and 1960s and can potentially be used as tracers in soil erosion and sediment movement studies. Here, we report data on 236U and 239,240Pu in soil samples from the Motueka Valley (New Zealand) and for the first time from two remote islands Rarotonga and Atiu (Cook Islands) in the South Pacific. 236U and 239,240Pu were measured using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) at the Australian National University. The 236U and 239Pu isotope concentrations versus soil depth and the 240Pu/239Pu and 236U/239Pu isotope ratios are discussed for each site. The radionuclide depth dependence revealed any soil disturbance, whereas the isotopic signatures indicated the source of the radionuclides' origin.

RESUMO

We report the assignment and analysis of 176 transitions belonging to a librational band of the (H2O)6 cage isomer near 525 cm-1(15 THz). From a fit of the transitions to an asymmetric top model, we observe both dramatic changes in the rotational constants relative to the ground state, indicating significant nonrigidity, and striking enhancement in the tunneling motions that break and reform the hydrogen bonds in the cluster. This is the fifth water cluster system to display such an enhancement in the 15 THz librational region, the details of which may help to elucidate the hydrogen bond dynamics occurring in bulk liquid water.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the effect of health education on the use of iodized salt in a remote region. METHODS: We randomly selected 31 villages in teh Lotkoh tehsil of district Chitral in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. We then randomly selected 7 households from each village and inteviewed the eldest women of the family. We also tested samples of salt for iodine concentration at the user's level. RESULTS: Eighty-five percent of families (184/217) used iodized salt exclusively. Among the samples population, the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) informed 67% about the importance of iodized salt. Shopkeepers and neighbors informed 25%. People informed by AKHS were more likely to know the volatile nature of iodine (76% vs 55%, p < 0.001) and the advantages of iodized salt (91% vs. 75%, p = 0.001) than persons informed by other sources. People who could name any single advantage of iodized salt were more likely to use iodized salt (97%) compared to those who could not name any advantages (62%) (p < 0.001) Iodine concentration in 78% (141/183) samples was acceptable (> or = 15 ppm). One specific brand of salt consistently had sufficient iodine concentration (91%) compared to all others (47%) (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Health education has been effective in promoting the use of iodized salt in these isolated rural communities. A joint effort by the government, local NGOs and the community can substitute the role of mass media in such areas. Regular evaluation of iodized salt brands should be considered.
