RESUMO

We present an indirect, non-destructive optical method for domain statistic characterization in disordered nonlinear crystals having homogeneous refractive index and spatially random distribution of ferroelectric domains. This method relies on the analysis of the wave-dependent spatial distribution of the second harmonic, in the plane perpendicular to the optical axis in combination with numerical simulations. We apply this technique to the characterization of two different media, Calcium Barium Niobate and Strontium Barium Niobate, with drastically different statistical distributions of ferroelectric domains.

RESUMO

Bulk laser-induced damage at 1064 nm has been investigated in KTiOPO4 (KTP) and RbTiOPO4 (RTP) crystals with a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Both crystals belong to the same family. Throughout this study, their comparison shows a very similar laser-damage behavior. The evolution of the damage resistance under a high number of shots per site (10,000 shots) reveals a fatigue effect of KTP and RTP crystals. In addition, S-on-1 damage probability curves have been measured in both crystals for all combinations of polarization and propagation direction aligned with the principal axes of the crystals. The results show an influence of the polarization on the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), with a significantly higher threshold along the z axis, whereas no effect of the propagation direction has been observed. This LIDT anisotropy is discussed with regard to the crystallographic structure.

RESUMO

We present measurements of second-harmonic generation with zinc-sulfide thin films. Both scattered light and specular light are investigated in linear optics as well as in second-harmonic generation. We show that second-harmonic generation is a powerful tool for understanding the nonlinear properties of thin films; it allows the study of the anisotropy found in the scattered and specular second harmonic. Using the symmetry of susceptibility tensors, we show that the films cannot be considered homogeneous when the crystallites are large. Finally, we outline nonlinear scattering measurements, which bring out the usefulness of second-harmonic light in probing the structure of thin films.

RESUMO

A goniometric ellipsometer is used to recover the optogeometrical parameters of metallic gratings. The phase difference between TE and TM polarizations in all the diffracted orders is measured as a function of the incidence angle. The groove depth, together with the refractive indices of all the media of the diffracting structure, is determined for a holographic sinusoidal aluminum grating. It is shown that a thin layer of alumina on top of the grating must be considered.
