BACKGROUND: Team-level job crafting has been put forward as a method to promote nurses' mental health. However, a longitudinal association is unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the association between team job crafting at baseline and work engagement, work performance, psychological distress, and intention to leave at three-month and six-month follow-ups among Japanese hospital nurses. Also, whether an increase in the team job crafting during 3 or 6 months was associated with an increase in the work engagement during 3 or 6 months of individual nurses was examined. METHODS: A multilevel prospective cohort study was conducted. Data were collected from nurses of five hospitals in Japan at baseline (T1) and follow-ups at 3-months (T2) and 6-months (T3). A total of 2,478 nurses were included. The team job crafting scale for nurses and its three subscales were measured for the independent variables. Ward-means were used as ward-level variables. The dependent variables were work engagement, work performance, psychological distress, and intention to leave. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to examine the multilevel association. The study protocol was registered at the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (ID = UMIN000047810) (May 22, 2022). RESULTS: A total of 460 nurses completed the T1 survey (response rate = 18.6%), and data from 391 nurses nested in 30 wards were included in the analyses. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) at T1 were 0.02 for work engagement and 0.07 for team job crafting. The HLM revealed that ward-level team job crafting at T1 was not significantly associated with work engagement, work performance, psychological distress, and intention to leave at T2 or T3. The ward-level change (T3-T1) of "crafting for the task considering the team's growth" (subscale for team job crafting) was significantly and positively associated with the change (T3-T1) in work engagement. CONCLUSIONS: Ward-level team job crafting at baseline did not predict nurses' work engagement, work performance, psychological distress, or intention to leave at a three-month or six-month follow-up. The impact of ward-level team job crafting may attenuate over several months.

OBJECTIVE: Work engagement is a key concept because of its positive association with physical/mental health, job performance, and well-being. This study aims to examine the relationship between organizational-level gratitude (collective gratitude) as a work climate and work engagement. METHODS: Utrecht Work Engagement Scale measured work engagement. Gratitude at Work Scale measured individual-level gratitude, and collective gratitude was calculated by aggregating individual-level gratitude after confirming within-group agreement and the intraclass correlations. Multilevel analysis was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 1187 workers from 72 organizations were analyzed. The multilevel analysis showed a significant positive association between collective gratitude and work engagement while controlling for individual-level confounders. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicated developing collective gratitude would improve work engagement in the workplace. It would be useful for managers and occupational health staff to consider collective gratitude initiatives.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the association between pre-pregnancy menstrual cycle characteristics (i.e. cycle-length variability and cycle length) and antenatal depression. METHODS: This study retrieved the data from the baseline survey of the randomized controlled trial with pregnant women at 16-20 weeks gestation who used a pregnancy tracking app. The antenatal depression was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 16-20 weeks gestation, and the cutoff point of 10/11 was adopted. Pre-conceptional menstrual cycle information was obtained via a prerecorded period tracking app. Cycle-length variability was defined as the average difference in the lengths between cycles, dichotomized into regular (≤6 days) and irregular (>6 days). Cycle length was coded as a categorical variable: <25 days, 25-26 days, 27-29 days (regular), 30-31 days, 32-33 days, and 34+ days. The associations of cycle disorders with EPDS scores were examined using regression analysis and a multiple logistic regression model adjusted for covariates. RESULTS: The total of 3473 participants were analyzed in this study. Irregular cycle variability (>6 days) was significantly associated with high EPDS scores (adjusted: standardized beta = 0.049, p = 0.003) and with high cutoff EPDS scores (over 11) (adjusted OR = 1.40 [1.02-1.94], p = 0.038) but not with cycle length. CONCLUSION: Irregular menstrual cycle before pregnancy was associated with depression during pregnancy. The health of the menstrual cycle during preconception needs to be further explored to promote healthy maternal mental health.

Aim: Previous studies evaluated the association between eating alone and mental health mainly in older people and adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the association between dinner frequency with others and psychological distress during the COVID-19 outbreak among the Japanese working population. Methods: Data were acquired from a prospective online cohort study (the Employee Cohort Study in the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan) conducted in February 2021 as a cross-sectional design. Dinner frequency with others was categorized into five groups: "almost daily," "4-5 times per week," "2-3 times per week," "once per week," and "less than once per week," setting them as a predictor variable. Modified Poisson regression was performed to calculate the prevalence ratio of psychological distress with multiple imputation for missing data. Global fear and worry about COVID-19 were adjusted as a covariate. Results: A total of 1171 participants completed the questionnaire. Respondents who ate dinner with others "almost daily" had the least psychological distress than those who ate with others "4-5 times," "2-3 times," and "once per week" in the crude model (prevalence ratio (95% CI): 1 [reference], 1.34 [1.08-1.67], 1.40 [1.15-1.69], 1.44 [1.12-1.85], respectively). The association was comparable after adjusting for global fear and worry about COVID-19. Conclusions: Among those who ate dinner with others at least once a week, those who ate with others "almost daily" had the least psychological distress. The association was comparable after adjusting for global fear and worry about COVID-19. Further study is needed on why those who eat with others less than once a week may have a lower prevalence ratio of having mental distress.

We report the case of a solid-pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) of the head of the pancreas causing occlusion of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) and marked pancreatic atrophy distal to the tumor disproportionate to the tumor size. A 15-yr-old girl was diagnosed with 5-cm solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreatic head with marked distal pancreatic atrophy. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography demonstrated obstruction of the MPD in the pancreatic head. We performed a duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection to avoid postoperative exocrine and endocrine insufficiency. The surgical specimen showed the typical gross appearance of a SPT, with only a thin rim of pancreas anterior to the tumor. We believe that this presentation results when a tumor originates posterior to the MPD. Thus, whether or not pancreatic atrophy occurs depends strongly on the anterior/posterior relationship between the enlarging tumor and the MPD. The risk of SPT causing severe pancreatic atrophy should be kept in mind to avoid irreversible pancreatic insufficiency in young females.
