RESUMO

1. Recent research has shown that encapsulated raspberry powder (RP) is a natural colourant for foodstuffs. However, no research has been conducted on its use in chicken nuggets. In addition, the effect of RP on products with and without phosphate addition is unknown. This study assessed the effects of RP (control, 0.5%, 1.0%) and phosphate (0.0%, 0.3%) on the pH and colour quality properties of nuggets.2. In the production of RP, red raspberry (Rubus ideaus L.) juices were encapsulated using maltodextrin in a spray-dryer. Antioxidant activity, total anthocyanin, total phenolics, colour, moisture and pH analyses of the RP were performed.3. Nuggets were packaged in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP; 40%CO2 + 60%N2) and were stored at 2.0 ± 0.5°C for 120 d. The pH and external and internal surface colour (L*, a*, b*, C* and h) values were measured on d 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 of storage.4. The addition of phosphate increased the pH in the samples, while these decreased with the addition of RP (p < 0.05). During storage, the highest pH were seen in the phosphate samples and the lowest in the nuggets with 1.0% RP addition (p < 0.05).5. With the addition of phosphate, the external surface a* value of nuggets increased (p < 0.05). Depending on the level of RP added to the nuggets, the external surface L* value decreased and a* and b* values increased (p < 0.05). After d 30 of storage, the a* value increased in the samples with RP addition and this increase was higher in the with phosphate nuggets (p < 0.05).6. The internal surface a* value increased with the addition of RP during nugget production (p < 0.05). The increase in a* value was greater in samples with added phosphate (p < 0.05). During storage, the highest a* values were seen in nuggets treated with phosphate + 0.1% RP (p < 0.05). The addition of RP to chicken nugget emulsion improved redness, colour stability and shelf life.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of information given before cesarean section on women's anxiety levels and their knowledge about informed consent regarding it. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty women who elected to undergo cesarean section were included in the study. The data were collected using the pregnancy-related clinical information form, informed consent form, cesarean information form, and State and Trait Anxiety Inventory. Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test and Pearson correlation were used as statistical methods. RESULTS: The women's knowledge scores before and after they were informed about cesarean section were 14.8 +/- 5.5 and 29.8 +/- 2.6, respectively (p < 0.05). Their state anxiety scores before and after they were informed about cesarean section were 28.4 +/- 6.6 and 28.0 +/- 5.9, respectively (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: It was determined that the participants' pre-training knowledge scores about cesarean section increased significantly after they were informed, and that their state and trait anxiety scores decreased very little after they were informed.

RESUMO

The aim of this case report was to present the combined orthodontic and surgical treatment of a patient with Apert syndrome in an adult stage. A 15 years old male patient with Apert syndrome was concerned about the appearance of his face and malocclusion. His profile was concave with a retruded maxilla and prominent lower lip. He had an Angle class I molar relationship with a 9.5 mm anterior open bite. The amount of crowding was 20.4 mm in the maxilla and 6 mm in the mandible. Cephalometric analysis revealed a skeletal Class III relationship due to maxillary hypoplasia with a dolichofacial growth pattern. Orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery were planned for the patient. After 45 months of presurgical orthodontics, the patient underwent two surgeries sequentially. The first surgery was performed to advance the maxilla and the second surgery was performed to correct the mandibular rotation and increase the overbite at the time of removing halo device. The amount of maxillary advencement was 8 mm. Mandibula was moved 1.5 mm anteriorly and rotated 1° to 1.5° (SNB and facial depth) in a counterclockwise direction. After a relatively long treatment, an esthetically pleasing and functional occlusion and correction of the skeletal problem was achieved in this adult case.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are a few case reports in literature that isotretinoin treatment may alter sleep architecture. Also studies in mice suggest a role of retinoids in the contribution of delta oscillations to the sleep electroencephalography. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of isotretinoin treatment on sleep architecture using polysomnography (PSG). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twelve severe acne vulgaris patients without any psychiatric and sleep disorders were treated with 0.5 mg/kg of isotretinoin. Clinician-administered acne questionnaire, psychiatric examination, Epworth sleepiness scale and PSG recordings were performed after the first month of treatment. RESULTS: Sleep efficiency was increased from 83.5% (62.8-89.0%, quartiles) to 89.5% (81.5-93.5%, quartiles; P = 0.036) and sleep latency decreased from 18.0 min (11.1-36.3, quartiles) to 15.5 min (9.3-19.0, quartiles; P = 0.023) following 1-month isotretinoin treatment. There were no significant changes in other sleep parameters of PSG and scores of Epworth sleepiness scale. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that isotretinoin treatment slightly improves night-time sleep without any effects on sleep stages and daytime sleepiness.

RESUMO

The impact of combined lower concentrations of organically-complexed versus inorganic copper, zinc and manganese on meat quality in chickens was investigated. A total of 200 male broiler chicks (Ross-308), 1-d-old and weighing approximately 40 g, were divided into 4 groups comprising three experimental groups and one control group, with each consisting of 50 chicks. All groups were also divided into 5 subgroups, with each containing 10 broiler chicks. All birds were given a starter diet from d 1 to d 21, and a grower diet from d 22 to d 49. The diets were formulated according to the NRC recommendations. The mineral contents of the control diet were supplied using a standard inorganic mineral premix (containing 8 mg Cu as CuSO4, 40 mg Zn as ZnSO4, and 60 mg Mn as MnO, per kg). For the experimental diets, a mineral premix was prepared using organically complexed forms of those minerals at 1/3 (L1), 2/3 (L2) and 3/3 (L3) proportions. After slaughtering and evisceration, the carcases were stored at 3 ± 0·5°C for 10-12 h, and then the breast fillets removed from the carcases, and stored in a deep-freezer (-86°C) until analysis (for 30 d). For analyses, the breast muscles were then thawed at 4-6°C for 24 h. 6. The concentration of organically complexed mineral in the diet had no statistically significant effect on pH values of breast fillets. Treatments significantly affected the Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) values. Lightness (L* value) of the fillet from broilers fed the diet containing inorganic minerals was significantly lower than that for broilers fed on the diets containing organically complexed minerals. The redness (a* value) and Chroma (C* value) significantly decreased while Hues (H* value) were higher in the fillet from broilers fed organically complexed minerals compared with those fed inorganic minerals. The yellowness (b* value) was not changed by dietary treatment.

RESUMO

The effects of beef intermuscular (BIF), beef kidney (BKF), and sheep tail fats (STF) and storage time on fatty acid composition, the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), free fatty acids (FFA), pH and L*, a*, and b* values, and Enterobacteriaceae counts of sliced vacuum-packaged Kavurma were investigated. Kavurma was made from fresh beef which contained different amounts of melted BIF, BKF, STF, and salt as 10 groups. The Kavurma was sliced 3 to 4 cm thick and was vacuum packed and stored at 4 +/- 0.5 degrees C for 360 d. Animal fat groups (BIF, STF, and BKF) had a statistically significant difference (P < 0.01) in terms of both fatty acid composition and total saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Used animal fat types and levels in Kavurma production had a significant effect on unsaturated fatty acid composition (except for C(18:1n9t)) (P < 0.01). C(18:1n9c) was the dominant fatty acid in all Kavurma groups, and the highest C(18:1n9c) was determined for 50% STF + 50% BKF (group 6). TBARS and FFA values were affected by the treatment (P < 0.01) and storage time (P < 0.01). The lowest TBARS value was found in group 10 (30% BIF + 35% STF + 35% BKF). There was a significant (P < 0.01) difference in FFA content in Kavurma between 0 and 180 and 360 d, and this value increased during storage time. The a* values of Kavurma decreased during storage, and the greatest decrease was determined between days 0 and 180 of storage. Enterobacteriaceae counts were determined to be under the detectable level in all Kavurma groups during storage.

RESUMO

In this study, new 1:2 Ni complexes of 1,3-substituted phenyl-5-phenylformazans were synthesized with -Cl, -Br substituents in the o-, m-, p-positions of the 1-phenyl ring and -NO2 group in the m-position of the 3-phenyl ring. Their structures were elucidated and spectral behaviors were investigated with the use of elemental analysis, GC-Mass, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, UV-vis spectra. Furthermore electrochemical properties such as number of electrons transferred (n), diffusion coefficients (D) and possible reaction mechanism of the compounds were determined with the use of cyclic voltammetry, ultramicrodisc electrode and chronoamperometry. The relation between their absorption properties and electrochemical properties was examined. A linear correlation was obtained between Hammett substituent coefficients with lambda(max) values.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify brain regions generating tics in patients with Tourette syndrome using sleep as a baseline. METHODS: We used [15O]H2O PET to study nine patients with Tourette syndrome and nine matched control subjects. For patients, conditions included tic release states and sleep stage 2; and for control subjects, rest states and sleep stage 2. RESULTS: Our study showed robust activation of cerebellum, insula, thalamus, and putamen during tic release. CONCLUSION: The network of structures involved in tics includes the activated regions and motor cortex. The prominent involvement of cerebellum and insula suggest their involvement in tic initiation and execution.

RESUMO

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of 6-week aerobic exercise program upon blood Zn and Cu levels. There were 12 male university students with an average age of 21.67+/-0.89 years and no regular training habits participated in the study. The participants were subjected three days a week 1 hour a day continuous running program on treadmill with an intensity of 60-70% for a period of six weeks. They were fed with zinc and copper free diet throughout the study and it was made sure that they were not using copper or zinc containing vitamin tablets. The difference between the pre and post study period were found to be statistically significant as regards to both resting and maximal loading conditions (p<0.01). The pre and post training maxVO2 values were also found to be positively correlated with the copper and zinc levels in blood. Both the copper and zinc blood levels were found decreased after the training period p<0.05.

RESUMO

The electrochemical reduction of 1-([(4-halophenyl)imino]methyl)-2-naphthols on graphite electrodes was studied using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, constant-potential coulometry and preparative constant-potential electrolysis techniques. The data revealed that the reduction on graphite was irreversible and followed an EC mechanism. The diffusion coefficients and the number of electrons transferred were determined using the chronoamperometric Cottrell slope and the ultramicro disc Pt-electrode steady-state current. The number of electrons was also determined by bulk electrolysis. The compounds were subjected to constant-potential preparative electrolysis and the electrolysis products were purified and identified by spectroscopic methods. Based on these findings, a mechanism for the electro-reduction process is proposed.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the histomorphology of the placenta and the placental bed and to correlate this with the Doppler study of the uterine and umbilical arteries of intrauterine growth restricted pregnancies. The study group consisted of 47 women with intrauterine growth restricted foetuses. Twenty-five uneventful pregnancies with appropriate for gestational age foetuses were selected as controls. Doppler studies of umbilical and uterine arteries were performed within the last week before delivery. Placental bed biopsies were obtained at Caesarean section with direct visualization of the placental site. The incidence of pathologic bed biopsies in control, IUGR with normal uterine artery Doppler velocimetry and IUGR with abnormal uterine artery Doppler velocimetry was 0 per cent, 16.6 per cent and 79.3 per cent respectively (P< 0.001). Placentae from IUGR cases with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler velocimetries had a significantly increased number of villous infarcts, cytotrophoblast proliferation and thickening of the villous trophoblastic basal membrane (P=0.001, P=0.038 and P=0.02 respectively). Abnormal placental bed biopsy pathology was significantly associated with abnormal uterine artery velocimetry (OR 33.7, 6.5-173.6; P< 0.001). Abnormal placental pathology was significantly associated with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry (OR 21.04, 3.8-115.9;P< 0.001). Women with both abnormal uterine and umbilical artery Doppler velocimetries were delivered earlier and their babies had lower mean birth and placental weight (P< 0.001). In conclusion, placental bed biopsy and placental pathologies are best reflected by abnormal uterine and umbilical artery velocity waveforms, respectively. The most severe clinical outcomes and perinatal mortality are present when both uterine and umbilical districts are altered.

RESUMO

This research was carried out to determine the effects of vitamin E supplementation on meat quality traits of approximate 8 months of age Morkaraman male lambs. The lambs were divided into two groups-control (CG, n=7) and experimental (VG, n=6)-at the beginning of fattening period. The diet given to the CG and VG consisted of concentrate and grass hay. In addition, the VG received a supplement of 45 mg vitamin E per lamb in a day during a 75-day fattening period. At the end of the study, average daily weight gain and feed conversion efficiency values as to feed basis were found to be 208 g and 6.3 for CG and 223 g and 6.0 for VG groups, respectively. Vitamin E supplementation resulted in 8.8% improvement in feed conversion efficiency. In the same way, vitamin E supplementation resulted in 6.7% increase in daily weight gain. Slaughter and carcass characteristics of lambs were also determined, but fattening performance, slaughter and carcass characteristics were not significantly different between groups. The effects of vitamin E on meat characteristics, meat colour (L*, a* and b*), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances content (TBARS), drip loss and pH were determined using m. longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles obtained from CG and VG. Though the effect of vitamin E supplementation on most of the meat quality traits was not statistically significant (P>0.05), L* and a* values in LD muscle from VG were preserved for a period of 12 days of maturation. In addition, a* (redness) tended to increase slightly. TBARS values in samples from CG were found to be higher than those of vitamin E treatment group. In this study, it was also concluded that drip loss was relatively preserved by vitamin E supplementation. In conclusion, vitamin E supplementation of Morkaraman male lambs at an inclusion rate over the amount of nutritional recommendations, significantly reduced lipid oxidation, drip loss and tended to maintain meat redness.

RESUMO

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of vitamin E supplementation on growth, non-carcass components and retail cut percentages, and meat quality traits of Awassi male lambs at approximately 8 months of age. The lambs were divided into two groups as control (CG, n=12) and experimental (VG, n=12) at the beginning of the fattening period. The CG and VG lambs were fed with a concentrate and grass hay close to ad-libitum by biweekly adjustment of the amount offered. In addition, the VG received a supplement of 45 mg vitamin E per lamb per day during a 75-day fattening period. Inital weight, final weight, daily weight gain and feed conversion efficiency were 31.8±1.40 kg, 45.5±1.37 kg, 183±13 g and 7.6 for CG, 32.5±1.45 kg, 46.7±1.42 kg, 189±15 g and 7.0 for VG, respectively. Vitamin E supplementation did not have a statistically significant effect on animal performance traits, non-carcass components and retail cut percentages, but produced an 8.1% improvement in feed conversion efficiency. After slaughter, carcasses were chilled at 4 °C for 24 h. Then, the carcasses were dissected into wholesale cuts, and m. longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles excised. The samples of muscle were subjected to moisture, protein, ether extract and ash analyses. Samples were cooked for shear test and cooking yield measurements. There were no significant differences between CG and VG lamb groups in chemical composition of meat samples from the LD muscles. Though the influence of vitamin E supplementation on color parameters (L*, a*, b*) was not statistically significant, the mean a* (redness) values decreased on days 2 and 4 and increased on days 7 and 12 of the storage period. However, the a* values of muscles from the VG were higher than those grouping CG. L* and a* values in LD muscle from vitamin E-treated lamb groups were also preserved for a period of 12 days of maturation. In this study, drip loss was relatively preserved by vitamin E supplementation to the diet of animals. The results showed that vitamin E supplementation to the diet of Awassi male lambs at an inclusion rate over the amount of nutritional recommendations relatively reduced lipid oxidation, drip loss and tended to maintain meat redness.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: we investigated effects of different regimens of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on mammographic density. METHODS: ninety-five postmenopausal women, who were on different HRT regimens and completed their 4-year mammographic follow-up, were included into this retrospective and comparative study. Twenty-three of these women, who had surgical menopause, received conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) (Group I) only, 26 of them received CEE and continuous medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) (Group II), 21 women received CEE and cyclic MPA (Group III), and the remaining 25 women received tibolone (Group IV) therapy. Before commencing on HRT, a baseline high-resolution mammography was performed, and repeated at 6-12-month intervals during the period of 4-year follow-up. All mammographies were evaluated according to the Wolfe classification. RESULTS: a diffuse increase in mammographic density was detected in five women (22%) in group I, nine women (35%) in group II, four women (19%) in group III, and two women (8%) in group IV. The increase in mammographic density was more common among women in group II than those in the other three groups. However, a statistically significant difference was found only between groups II and IV. CONCLUSIONS: different HRT regimens have different effects on breast parenchymal density on mammography. Continuous combination HRT may be more commonly associated with an increase in breast density than other forms of HRT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a rare disorder and associated with a variety of anomalies. CASE: An 18-year-old woman was referred with primary amenorrhea. Following physical, ophthalmologic, psychiatric, hormonal and radiologic examinations, the diagnosis of both craniopharyngioma and Bardet-Biedl syndrome was established. CONCLUSION: Although the pathogenesis of hypogonadism in a woman with Bardet-Biedl syndrome remains unclear, cranial structures, especially the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, should be investigated to reveal any possible abnormalities.

RESUMO

In the title linear trinuclear compound, [Zn[Zn(CH(3)COO)(C(17)H(16)N(2)O(2))](2)], the central Zn(2+) ion, which is located on an inversion centre, has a distorted octahedral coordination involving four bridging O atoms from two N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediaminate ligands in the equatorial plane and one O atom from each bridging acetate group in the axial positions. The coordination around the terminal Zn(2+) ion is irregular square pyramidal, with two O and two N atoms of the ligand in the basal plane and one O atom from an acetate group in the apical position. The acetate bridges linking the central and terminal Zn(2+) ions are mutually trans. The Zn.Zn distance is 3.0520 (8) A. The relationship of this structure to that of [Zn[Cu(CH(3)COO)(C(17)H(16)N(2)O(2))](2)] is discussed.
