RESUMO

Tube manufacturers use different composition of gels and blood clot activator formulations in serum tube production. Our aim was to investigate the within-tube (repeatability) and between-tube variation, concordance between comparison results of BD and VacuSEL tubes. Blood samples were collected from control subjects (n = 20) and patients (n = 30) in accordance with the CLSI GP41-A6 and CLSI GP34-A guidelines. Twenty-three clinical chemistry parameters were analysed via Roche Cobas C702 Chemistry Analyzer on T0 (0 hour) and T24 (24 hour). Mean differences % were compared with Wilcoxon matched pair test. Clinical significance was evaluated based on desirable bias according to total allowable error (TEa). VacuSEL tubes demonstrated acceptable performance for the results of 20 parameters with regards to desirable bias % limits. Lactate dehydrogenase (LD) [mean difference % (%95 confidence intervals (CI) values of BD and VacuSEL tubes at T0 [6.41% (4.80-8.01%)]; sodium (Na) and total protein (TP) at T24 [-0.27% (-0.46 to -0.07%) and -1.39% (-1.87 to -0.91), respectively] were over the desirable bias limits (LD: 4.3%, Na: 0.23% and TP: 1.36%, respectively) but not exceeding total biological variation CV % [Na: 0.5 (0.0-1.0) % and TP: 2.6 (2.3-2.7) %). %95 confidence intervals (CI) of T0 LD values overlap with within-subject biological variation % (CI) limits (LD: 5.2 (4.9-5.4) %). The differences between two tubes were not medically significant and necessarily conclusive. VacuSEL serum tubes presented comparable performance with BD serum tubes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the current study, it was aimed to evaluate neurotrophic factor levels and their relationship with executive functions in high-risk children and adolescents (high-risk group) whose parents were diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) but not affected by any psychiatric disease, and in order to determine possible vulnerability factors related to the disease. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 32 high-risk group and 34 healthy controls. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version-Turkish Adaptation (KSADS-PL-T), Stroop Test, Serial Digit Learning Test (SDLT) and Cancellation Test to evaluate executive functions were administered to all participants by the clinician.Serum levels of neurotrophic factors were measured using commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay kits. RESULTS: Serum BDNF, NT-3, NT-4 levels and SDLT scores were significantly lower in the high-risk group for BD compared to the healthy control group. A moderate negative correlation was found between BDNF levels and the Cancellation Test scores in the high-risk group. In addition to these results, the odds ratios of age, NT-4, SDLT scores for being in the risky group in terms of BD diagnosis were 1.26, 0.99 and 0.86 respectively. LIMITATIONS: This was a cross-sectional study. Causality between study results is therefore difficult to establish. The relatively small sample size of the study is another limitation. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that BDNF, NT-3, NT-4 may play a role in the physiopathology of BD and may be associated with impaired executive function areas such as attention and response inhibition in the high-risk group.

RESUMO

Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is recognized as one of the most common endocrine pathologies in females of reproductive age worldwide. This study investigated the relationship between serum sclerostin levels and body mass index (BMI) in women with PCOS. Methods Women aged 18-40 years who presented to our clinic between January 1, 2019, and January 1, 2020, and were diagnosed with PCOS were included in this study. The patients' clinical and laboratory data were recorded, and waist circumference, hip circumference, and BMI values were calculated. The patients with a BMI of >25 kg/m2 were evaluated as Group I, those with a BMI of <18.5 kg/m2 as Group II, and those with a BMI of 18.5-25 kg/m2 as Group III. Serum sclerostin levels were compared between the BMI groups. Results The study included 90 patients. The mean BMI values were 32.2±2.1, 17.0±0.9, and 22.9±2.1 kg/m2 for Groups I, II, and III, respectively. We detected a statistically significant difference in serum sclerostin levels between Group II and Group I (p<0.005). There was a significant, positive correlation between the sclerostin level and BMI (r=0.258, p=0.014), weight (r=0.237, p=0.044), waist measurement (r=0.225, p=0.045), and hip measurement (r=0.225, p=0.033). Conclusion This study revealed that abnormal body composition in PCOS could alter circulating sclerostin levels.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease that can cause cardiovascular comorbidities. Some recent studies have indicated that impaired gut microbiota and metabolites may be associated with inflammatory diseases. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the relationship between serum trimethylamine n-oxide (TMAO, a gut bacterial metabolite) level and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and disease severity in psoriasis patients was investigated. METHODS: Age- and gender-matched 73 patients and 72 healthy controls were included in the study. In both groups serum trimethylamine n-oxide(TMAO), oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase(ALT) levels were recorded and the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured by B-mode ultrasonography by a cardiologist. RESULTS: TMAO, hs-CRP, oxidized-LDL, triglyceride and CIMT levels were statistically higher in the patient group. HDL levels were statistically higher in the control group. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of total cholesterol and LDL-C levels. In partial correlation analyzes in the patient group, positive correlations were observed between TMAO and CIMT, LDL-C and total cholesterol levels. Linear regression analysis showed that TMAO levels positively predicted CIMT levels. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed that psoriasis is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease and that elevated serum TMAO levels in these patients indicate the presence of intestinal dysbiosis. Furthermore, TMAO levels were found to be a predictor of the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in psoriasis patients.

RESUMO

In this study, it was investigated whether there are trace element abnormalities in epileptic patients, the relationship of trace elements with fatigue and depression, and whether trace elements contribute to the development of fatigue and depression. A total of 87 people, 48 epileptic cases and 39 controls, were included in our study. Trace element levels of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se) were measured in a single session on the study day by the same team. Beck Depression Inventory, Fatigue Severity Scale, Mood State Scale, and SF-36 Quality of Life scales were administered to all participants by the same person. The results were compared statistically. Depression rate was found as 35.4% and fatigue rate was 45.8% in epileptics. Se, Cu, and Mn levels were significantly higher in epileptics (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in Zn and Pb levels (p > 0.05). In the study, a moderate positive correlation was found between fatigue and depression (r = 0.346, p = 0.016). Fatigue severity scale (FSS) and Beck depression inventory (BDI) scores were found to be significantly higher in epileptics (p < 0.05). Total mood scale (TMS) mean score was compared between patient and control groups, and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p < 0.005). It was observed that fatigue and depression are more common in epileptics, and there may be abnormalities in trace element plasma levels in epileptics, and it was determined that trace elements did not show a significant difference between those with and without fatigue and depression, and trace elements did not show a significant correlation with fatigue and depression.

RESUMO

The aim is to determine the oxidative status of children with febrile neutropenia (FEN). Blood samples were collected to determine the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidative status (TOS) of healthy children (once) and children with FEN after 0, 48, and 96 hours. Eighteen patients with FEN were evaluated. The baseline TAC level of patients was significantly higher than that of the controls (P<0.0001). The TAC levels of patients with FEN with and without antibiotic modification were higher than those of the controls (P=0.002 and 0.02, respectively). The TAC levels of the patients with FEN with antibiotic modification were lower than those of the patients without antibiotic modification (P=0.0224). The oxidative stress index (OSI), calculated TOS/TAS, value of the children with FEN was lower than that of the controls (P<0.0001). The OSI values of the patients with FEN with and without antibiotic modification were lower than those of the control group (P=0.001 and <0.0001, respectively). The TAC values of the patients with antibiotic modification were higher than those of the patients without antibiotic modification (P=0.02). In conclusion, the oxidative status of the children with FEN was affected, and it can give information about the follow-up of FEN.

RESUMO

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global health problem caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). SARS-CoV-2 infection may present with clinical pictures ranging from asymptomatic or mild forms to respiratory failure requiring intensive care follow-up and mechanical ventilation. The course of this disease with different clinical presentations raises many immunological questions. This study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of Annexin-1 (ANXA-1), Annexin-2 (ANXA-2) and bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and to investigate whether these markers are associated with lung involvement. The study was conducted in 173 patients who were followed and treated with the diagnosis of COVID-19 and 51 healthy control group. Patients were primarily divided into two groups based on the presence of typical lung involvement (ground glass opacities, consolidation, and both) in the thoracic computed tomography (CT) scans for COVID-19. Those who found to have involvement in thoracic CT scans were divided into three groups as mild (< 33%), moderate (34-66%), and severe (> 67%) according to the extent of their lesions. Of the 173 patients included in the study, 130 had typical thoracic CT involvement for COVID-19, while 43 did not. ANXA-1, ANXA-2 and BMP-7 values were found to be higher in the patients than the control group (p= 0.001, p= 0.001, p= 0.001). ANXA-2 levels were higher in patients with thoracic CT involvement than those without thoracic CT involvement (p= 0.023). In addition, when the patients were evaluated according to their thorax CT involvement levels, it was found that as the lung involvement levels increased, ANXA-2 increased, ANXA-1 decreased, and BMP-7 levels did not change. While the increase in ANXA-2 was statistically significant, the decrease in ANXA-1 was not found statistically significant. When the relationship between the laboratory parameters and the thorax CT involvement level was evaluated; it was found that , the lymphocyte and thrombocyte counts decreased as the thorax CT involvement increased, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ferritin, procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer and troponin levels were increased. While no significant correlation was found between ANXA-1 and BMP-7 and laboratory parameters, a positive correlation was found between ANXA-2 and leukocyte count, LDH, troponin, PCT, ferritin, D-dimer, and CRP. The data obtained in our study suggest that the ANXA-2 level at the time of admission was related with the lung involvement and the level of involvement of the disease. As a result, molecular studies are needed today to understand the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and to investigate new treatment targets. Evaluation of ANXA-2 level may be important in predicting the level of lung involvement due to COVID-19.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a common, chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. Although its relationship with cardiovascular risk factors is one of the main causes of mortality, the association between psoriasis and cardiovascular events is controversial. AIM: The aim of this study is to measure the levels of hs-CRP and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) related to atherosclerosis in patients with moderate-severe psoriasis and to evaluate their possible association with disease severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 45 moderate-severe psoriasis patients without additional risk factors for cardiovascular disease and 45 healthy individuals as a control group. RESULTS: Serum PAPP-A levels in both groups were given as two different variables, detectable and non- detectable, based on a value of 0.004 U/lL. When PAPP-A levels were compared, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the PAPP-A test in the evaluation of early-stage atherosclerosis in moderate-severe psoriasis patients who do not have additional risk factors for cardiovascular diseases may not be sufficient.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients are markedly higher. In addition, plasma NGAL levels were increased in patients with acute and chronic heart failure as a complication of myocardial infarction. In this study, we investigated whether there is a difference between the prognostic use of plasma NGAL levels in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients with preserved and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). METHODS: 235 consecutive STEMI patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into groups according to LVEF. Plasma NGAL, troponin I, creatine kinase MB (CKMB), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Finally, the study population examined with 34 reduced LVEF and 34 preserved LVEF consisted of a total of 68 patients (12 females; mean age, 61.5 ± 14.7). All patients were followed up prospectively for 6 months. This study group was divided into two subgroups as the patients who died (n = 14) and survived (n = 34), and plasma NGAL levels of the groups were compared. RESULTS: The median of NGAL was 190.08 ng/ml. Age, troponin I, CKMB, CRP, glomerular filtration rate, and creatinine were higher in reduced LVEF groups. Plasma NGAL levels were also higher in reduced LVEF than in preserved LVEF, but statistically not significant (p=0.07). Plasma NGAL levels were significantly higher in death patients than in survived patients (p < 0.001). In ROC curve analysis, the level to detect isolated cardiovascular mortality with a sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 77% was 190 ng/mL for NGAL. CONCLUSION: Plasma NGAL levels can be used to predict cardiovascular mortality in STEMI patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease in adolescents known to be associated with oxidative stress. However, the number of studies in which oxidative stress and antioxidants are evaluated together is limited. AIMS: In this study, we aimed to investigate L-arginine/nitric oxide (NO) pathway metabolites, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), and vitamin A and E levels in patients with acne and its association with disease severity. PATIENTS/METHODS: Ninety patients with acne and 30 healthy adults were included in the study. The serum levels ofL-arjinin, L-arginine metabolites, IMA, and vitamins A and E measured in the patient and control groups. RESULTS: Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), LNG -monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), and IMA levels were significantly higher in the patients with acne than in the control group (P Ë‚ .05). The L-arginine/ADMA ratio and citrulline and vitamin A levels were significantly lower in patients with acne than those of the controls (P Ë‚ .05). ADMA and IMA plasma levels were increased in parallel with the disease severity (P Ë‚ .05). L-arginine/ADMA ratio, L-arginine, citrulline, and vitamin A plasma levels decreased as the disease became severe (P Ë‚ .05). Although L-arginine and vitamin E levels were lower in the patient group compared to the control group, the difference was not statistically significant (P Ëƒ .05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that IMA and L-arginine-NO pathway associated with ischemia and oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of acne vulgaris.

RESUMO

Psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis. The objective of this study is evaluate the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) serum and cystatin-C, fetuin-A levels in determining the increased risk of subclinical atherosclerosis in psoriasis patients. In this study, age and gender compatible 80 psoriasis patients and 78 healthy individuals were included. For both groups, serum cystatin-C, fetuin-A, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride, total cholesterol, and creatinine levels were recorded and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured via B-mode ultrasonography by cardiology department. In binary comparisons between patient and control groups, cystatin-C, fetuin-A, hs-CRP, and CIMT values were higher in psoriasis patients and there was a statistically significant difference (P < .05). In control group, serum HDL-C level was statistically significant higher (P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference in hs-CRP, ox-LDL, LDL-C, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and creatinine levels between the groups (P > .05). Our study supported that psoriasis is a risk factor for development of atherosclerosis and we think that cystatin-C can be used as an important marker in determining subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with psoriasis.

RESUMO

Behçet's disease (BD) is an autoimmune disease that affects many organs. We aimed to investigate the relationship between BD and these pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), neopterin, and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) parameters. The study included 57 BD patients and 54 healthy controls. After evaluating the active and inactive disease status of the patients, analyzes were performed. When comparing the patient and control groups, neopterin (111.27 ± 37.49; 76.77 ± 38.27 [nmol/L]; P < .001) and hsCRP (11.81 ± 16.8; 3.62 ± 5.06 [mg/L]; P = .001) parameters were significantly higher in patients. Neopterin (117.68 ± 41.67; 94.85 ± 14.75 [nmol/L]; P = .038) and hsCRP (14.68 ± 18.7; 4.47 ± 7.27 [mg/L]; P = .002) found different in active and inactive patients. The sensitivities of neopterin and hsCRP were also found to be high in BD (respectively 93%, 67%). PAPP-A was especially elevated in skin pathologies (P = .02) and neopterin in joint involvement (P = .03). We think that the use of neopterin and hsCRP can help in diagnosis and follow-up of BD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Endocan, chemerin, and galectin-3 are discrete biomarkers associated with cardiovascular diseases and acting through different pathophysiological pathways. The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the effects of high doses of atorvastatin and rosuvastatin on serum endocan, chemerin, and galectin-3 levels in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: Sixty-three patients with AMI were randomized to receive atorvastatin (80 mg/day) or rosuvastatin (40 mg/day) after percutaneous revascularization. Serum levels of endocan, chemerin, and galectin-3 were evaluated at baseline and after 4-week therapy. RESULTS: Endocan levels were not decreased statistically significantly with atorvastatin 80 mg, but rosuvastatin 40 mg markedly decreased the levels of endocan according to baseline [from 110.27 (86.03-143.69) pg/mL to 99.22 (78.30-122.87) pg/mL with atorvastatin 80 mg and from 110.73 (77.28-165.22) pg/mL to 93.40 (70.48-115.13) pg/mL with rosuvastatin 40 mg, p=0.242 for atorvastatin 80 mg and p=0.014 for rosuvastatin 40 mg]. Chemerin levels significantly decreased in both groups according to baseline [from 264.90 (196.00-525.95) ng/mL to 135.00 (105.95-225.65) ng/mL with atorvastatin 80 mg and from 309.95 (168.87-701.27) ng/mL to 121.25 (86.60-212.65) ng/mL with rosuvastatin 40 mg, p<0.001, respectively, for both groups]. Galectin-3 levels did not change markedly with atorvastatin 80 mg, but they decreased with rosuvastatin 40 mg [from 17.00 (13.10-22.25) ng/mL to 19.30 (15.25-23.45) ng/mL with atorvastatin 80 mg, p=0.721, and from 18.25 (12.82-23.82) ng/mL to 16.60 (10.60-20.15) ng/mL with rosuvastatin 40 mg, p=0.074]. There were no significant between-group differences in terms of absolute and percentage changes of endocan, chemerin, and galectin-3 at 4 weeks. CONCLUSION: We reported that both statins similarly decreased the endocan levels, whereas rosuvastatin seems to have more prominent effects on the reduction of the chemerin and galectin-3 levels in patients with AMI.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Subclinical inflammation markers play a significant role in hyperemesis gravidarum (HEG). Simple hematological markers such as mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been shown to reflect inflammatory burden and disease activity in several disorders. Ketonuria is a parameter used in the diagnosis of severe HEG, but its correlation with disease severity remains controversial. The relationship of subclinical inflammation markers with degree of ketonuria has not been examined previously. In this study, we aimed to determine the diagnostic value of these subclinical inflammation markers and the relationship between these markers and grade of ketonuria in patients with HEG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 94 pregnant women with a diagnosis of HEG and 100 gestational age-matched healthy pregnant women were enrolled in this retrospective study. MPV, PDW, NLR, PLR, PCT, and ketonuria were calculated and analyzed from complete blood cell counts and total urine analyses. RESULTS: Lymphocyte count was significantly higher in the control group (P < 0,001); NLR and PLR values were significantly higher in the HEG group (P < 0,001). Among inflammation markers, RDW increased significantly (P = 0,008) with an increase in ketonuria in patients with HEG. A statistically significant correlation was found between white blood cell (WBC) and NLR, PLR, PCT. A moderate uphill relationship was observed between NLR and WBC and a weak uphill linear relationship was observed between WBC and PLR and between WBC and PCT. CONCLUSIONS: PLR and NLR can be considered effective markers to aid in the diagnosis of HEG. No marker was found to correlate with ketonuria grade except RDW, although the relationship of the severity of ketonuria with severity of disease is controversial. RDW increases as the degree of ketonuria increases.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet distribution width (PDW), red cell distribution width (RDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), and plateletcrit (PCT) are known as systemic inflammatory response markers. In this study, we aimed to evaluate changes in NLR, PLR, PDW, RDW, MPV, and PCT in preeclampsia (PE) and their use in predicting its severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective case-control study. The study comprised 64 control group (healthy pregnant females), 51 females with mild PE, and 13 with severe PE. These three groups were compared with demographic data and inflammation markers. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between healthy pregnant females and preeclaptic females in terms of median age, hemoglobin, lymphocyte, neutrophil, platelet, NLR, PLR, PDV, RDW, MPV, PCT (P > 0.05). The control group has a higher number of gravity and parity than the PE group (P < 0.001). MPV value is a lower PE group than the control group (P < 0.001). Both gravity and parity were significantly higher in the patients with mild PE than in the control group (P < 0.001). MPV value was statistically higher in the control group compared both mild and severe PE (P < 0.001), however, no statistical difference between mild and severe PE (P = 0.305). CONCLUSIONS: MPV may be clinically useful markers in the prediction of PE. Further, prospective multicenter studies are needed to reveal the association between these markers and PE.

RESUMO

In recent years, there have been changes in the approach to maternal psychiatric disorders and their effects on the fetus, with the focus redirected to the search for biological markers. Neurotrophic factors and inflammatory processes have received particular attention in the past few years. According to the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), the study sample (n = 136) consisted of three groups: mothers with major depressive disorder (MDD group, n = 25), mothers with anxiety disorder (AD group, n = 18), and mothers without any psychiatric disorders (not diagnosed (ND) group, n = 93). During the delivery/cesarean section, a blood sample was obtained from the umbilical cord. Serum concentrations of BDNF, NT-3, FGF2, TNF-α, and neopterin were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), according to the manufacturer's procedure. Clinical and biochemical characteristics were assessed. We did not find a significant difference among the three study groups with regard to BDNF, NT-3, and TNF-α levels. The ANOVA test indicated statistically significant differences in FGF2 levels and neopterin between the study groups. The newborns of mothers with AD had significantly higher FGF2 levels and significantly higher neopterin levels when compared with those of mothers with MDD and healthy mothers. The present study sheds light on the effects of higher FGF2 and neopterin levels in fetuses exposed to AD. Our results should be replicated through further prospective studies with a larger sample size.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), a new biomarker, is a soluble form of membrane-bound receptors secreted from different immune cells. The aim of the present study is to determine plasma suPAR levels in Behçet's disease and their correlation with disease activity. METHODS: Thirty Behçet's disease patients determined according to the International Study Group criteria for Behçet's disease diagnosis and 41 healthy subjects were included in the present study. Micro-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to obtain quantitative data. Data of both groups were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The comparison of C-reactive protein and suPAR plasma levels of the control and Behçet's disease group revealed statistically significant differences (respectively, P = 0.003 < 0.05 and P = 0.020 < 0.05). However, plasma suPAR levels related with disease activity revealed no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The present study is the first study analyzing suPAR levels in Behçet's disease patients and their correlation with disease activity. However, further prospective studies with larger patient series using suPAR as a new plasma biomarker are required to diagnose and monitor Behcet's disease and to support the findings of the present study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to measure the serum levels of heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) in patients presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and diabetic ketosis (DK) and to determine its role in identifying early-period cardiac ischemia. METHODS: This prospective study included 35 patients diagnosed with DKA, 20 patients diagnosed with DK, and 20 control subjects. H-FABP, creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), and troponin I levels were investigated at presentation in patients with DKA and DK and in the control group. H-FABP values were measured again after acidosis correction in the DKA patients. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found with respect to troponin I and CK-MB within the groups. The H-FABP values of DKA patients at presentation were found to be significantly higher than those of DK patients and the control group (p=0.015). The H-FABP value of the DKA group was also found to be significantly higher than the value at hour 36 after acidosis correction (p=0.0001). CONCLUSION: We would like to propose H-FABP as a potential marker for indicating myocardial ischemia.

RESUMO

We evaluated the concentrations of human epididymis secretory protein E4 (HE4) and Ca-125 in relation to clinicopathologic features in patients with endometrial cancer and premalignant endometrial lesions. Women with abnormal uterine bleeding (n = 167) who underwent endometrial sampling were divided into four groups. Group 1: endometrial cancer (n = 68), group 2: atypical endometrial hyperplasia (n = 12), group 3: endometrial hyperplasia without atypia (n = 39) and group 4: controls (n = 48). Women with endometrial cancer exhibited higher concentrations of HE4 levels than controls (91.4 pmol/L vs. 46.2 pmol/L, p < 0.001). HE4 levels were significantly higher in patients with lymphatic involvement, deep myometrial invasion, lymphovascular space involvement and non-endometrioid histology (p < 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for HE4 in detecting endometrial cancer were 72.7%, 84.4%, 80% and 78.4%, respectively. Preoperative HE4 levels are more elevated in women with endometrial cancer than those with benign endometrium as well as in women with prognostic high-risk factors with endometrial cancer. HE4 may be used as an additional marker in combination with other clinicopathologic features for planning the treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of growth-differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) levels and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in the early detection of anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy during the treatment of childhood cancers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (13 males and 7 females) newly diagnosed with childhood cancer whose treatment protocol included anthracycline were included in the study. Echocardiography, including M-mode, pulse Doppler, and TDI, was performed after the first anthracycline treatment at cumulative doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/m and at least 6 months after the last treatment. GDF-15 and troponin-I were also measured at these time points. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 14 years (range, 3 to 18 y). The median cumulative anthracycline dose was 220 mg/m (range, 60 to 400 mg/m). Conventional pulse wave and pulse wave tissue Doppler methods revealed significant differences in the right ventricular myocardial performance indices of the patients who received cumulative anthracycline doses of 300 mg/m compared with their indices at least 6 months after the last treatment. The serum GDF-15 levels after the cumulative anthracycline dose of 200 mg/m were also higher than the patients' pretreatment levels. CONCLUSIONS: Doppler/TDI and GDF-15 levels may be used in the early determination of anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy during the treatment of childhood cancers.
