RESUMO

Introduction Treatment of patients suffering from acute abdominal pain (AAP) is often challenging due to its wide range of associated illnesses, which could delay or prevent the identification of the correct diagnosis. Multiple diagnoses should be considered, particularly those in life-threatening situations needing urgent intervention. Aim This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge among the general population related to acute abdomen and which specialty should be sought for consultation in AAP situations. Subject and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among the general population living in Saudi Arabia. A self-administered questionnaire was sent to the Saudi population through the Google survey. The questionnaire included basic demographic characteristics (i.e., age, gender, etc.), perceived causes, barriers, the most common symptoms of AAP, and a five-item questionnaire to assess the general population's knowledge about AAP. Results Of the 2,703 respondents, 68.1% were females, and 42.4% were aged between 18 and 25 years old. The digestive system disorders (esophagus, stomach, intestine, and colon) were the most perceived causes that led to AAP (76.6%). The overall mean knowledge score was 1.35 (SD 1.07) out of five points. Accordingly, nearly all (87.2%) were considered to have poor knowledge, 9.5% were considered to have moderate knowledge, and only 3.3% were considered to have good knowledge. Being younger, being a male, and living in the Central Region were the factors associated with increased knowledge. Conclusion There was a lack of knowledge about AAP among the general population in Saudi Arabia. Younger age, gender males, and living in the Central Region were identified as the significant factors of increased knowledge. It is necessary to increase the knowledge of the population regarding acute abdomen. Media awareness campaigns may play a significant role in providing the necessary information to the general public.

RESUMO

Introduction The General Surgery Residency Training Program is known to be one of the most challenging programs, which greatly impacts the resident's quality of life (QoL) during their training years. Undertraining residents are usually the first providers of patients' healthcare in medical facilities. They often get exposed to continuous pressure and stress, especially during long working hours. Aim This study aims to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of general surgery residents in Saudi Arabia and investigate the personal and workplace determinants associated with the level of quality of life. Subjects and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among general surgery residents in Saudi Arabia. A self-administered online questionnaire was distributed among the target residents. The questionnaire includes sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., gender, region of the training center, and residency level) and Work-Related Quality of Life (WRQoL) scale to measure the residents' quality of life at work. Results Of the 239 residents, 64.9% were males, and 27.2% were resident level 1. Among WRQoL components, only home-work interface (HWI) (mean score: 9.87 out of 15 points) and general well-being (GWB) (mean score: 20.6 out of 30 points) had average ratings, while control at work (CAW), job and career satisfaction (JCS), stress at work (SAW), and working conditions (WCS) were classified as good. The overall WRQoL was deemed good (mean score: 81.3 out of 115 points). Being a female and practicing residency inside central region were the factors associated with better WRQoL. No significant differences were observed between WRQoL in terms of residency level, marital status, and previous visitation to a psychiatrist or psychologist (p>0.05). Conclusion Nearly one-third of the general surgery residents perceived their WRQoL as good. Female residents practicing in the central region demonstrated better quality of life as compared to the rest of the residents. Further research is needed to establish the level of WRQoL and its effect on general surgery residents during residency training.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Digital rectal examination (DRE) is an important diagnostic tool used by physicians to resolve several confusing clinical situations. The history and physical examination cannot be complete without performing a DRE. Any patient that presents with abdominal complaints (e.g., diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal or rectal pain, bleeding) needs a DRE which is important for detecting warning signs of serious conditions that require further investigation and evaluation such as malignancies. Therefore, our aim was to assess and measure the awareness of the Saudi population regarding the importance and acceptance to perform DRE. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, using an online survey between September 2022 and March 2023; the targeted participants were adults between the ages of 18 to 75. RESULTS: The study indicated that the general community awareness of DRE is low, with only 59.1% of participants having heard of DRE and 14.6% having undergone the procedure previously. The majority of individuals (60.9%) were willing to undergo DRE if a healthcare provider suggested it. Participants' knowledge of DRE's ability to detect various anorectal diseases varied. While the majority of individuals believed DRE could detect hemorrhoids, just 40.4% believed DRE could help detect colorectal cancer. Chronic constipation or diarrhea, feces-induced stretching, and prolonged sitting were the most oft-cited causes of hemorrhoids. Anemia was the most often reported consequence of hemorrhoids, followed by hypertension and diabetes. CONCLUSION: The significance of DRE as a screening tool for the early detection and prevention of anorectal problems, as well as the need for adequate care and treatment of hemorrhoids to prevent complications, are highlighted by these findings. Healthcare practitioners should actively recommend and provide information about DRE and other screening technologies, as well as address their patients' concerns and misconceptions.

RESUMO

Aim: It is a complex decision for patients and their families to select a qualified surgeon who meets their needs. Understanding these needs enables surgeons to build stronger relationship with patients. This study aimed to identify influencing factors, variables, and criteria that individuals consider when selecting surgeons for elective surgeries. Methods: This is a nationwide cross-sectional study conducted among patients who have undergone elective surgeries in Saudi Arabia. The data were collected with an anonymous self-administered pre-validated questionnaire. The collection of data was carried out through web-based questionnaires using google forms. The questionnaire contains socio-demographic characteristics (i.e., age, gender, education, etc.) and different factors to assess patients' perceptions in choosing a surgeon. Result: Patients' overall number was 3133 (56.2 % females vs 43.8 % males). The most common age group was 18 to 34 years old (63.7 %). The prevalence of patients who were able to choose the right surgeon to perform an operation was 79.8 %. Patients' top choice when selecting a surgeon was according to the surgeon's manner followed by the qualifications then the reputation. Females are choosing a surgeon according to his/her manner while males are choosing according to his/her qualifications. Conclusion: Surgeons' manner and qualifications are the most considered factors among when selecting a surgeon while the realistic factors such as accreditation of a facility and surgeon's scientific roles, quality improvement, and patient safety are ignored among the public. This requires condensed educational efforts and further research to determine the advertisements and social media effects on patients' decisions related to their health.
