RESUMO

The purpose of our study was to compare the influence of two types of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on the performance of older adults on the 6-min test of walking endurance and on the ability to maintain balance during upright standing. Twenty-six healthy older adults (72 ± 5.4 yrs) performed tests of motor function while TENS was applied to the tibialis anterior and rectus femoris muscles of each leg. Linear mixed models were used to compare the influence of TENS on walking distance in a 6-min test of walking endurance and on sway-area rate in tests of standing balance. There was a significant decrease in the distances walked in each minute of the 6-min walk test for both the Continuous and Burst TENS modes compared with Baseline (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). The influence of TENS on walking distance was associated with several significant effects on the mean and coefficient of variation for stride length and stride frequency between the first and last minute of the test and between the two TENS modes and the Baseline values. In contrast, there was no significant effect of TENS on sway-area rate in any balance test, which indicates that the supplementary sensory feedback compromised walking performance of older adults but not the ability to maintain balance during upright standing.

The purpose was to determine the impact of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on measures of walking kinematics and standing balance of healthy older adults who were stratified into two groups based on differences in the distance walked during the 6-min test of walking endurance. Regression models were developed to explain the variance in the 6-min distance and to assess the predictive power of balance metrics to categorize the 26 older adults (72 ± 5.4 yrs) as either slow or fast walkers. Walking kinematics were measured during 6- and 2-min walk tests that were performed with and without the concurrent application of TENS to the hip flexor and ankle dorsiflexor muscles. Participants walked briskly during the 6-min test and at a preferred pace during the 2-min test. The supplementary sensory stimulation provided by TENS did not alter the power of the models to explain the variance in the Baseline 6-min distance: Baseline, R2 = 0.85; TENS, R2 = 0.83. In contrast, TENS improved the explanatory power of the data obtained during the 2-min walk to account for the variance in the Baseline 6-min distance: no TENS, R2 = 0.40; TENS, R2 = 0.64. Logistic regression models based on force-plate and kinematic data obtained during the balance tasks were able to discriminate between the two groups with excellent certainty. The impact of TENS was greatest when older adults walked at a preferred speed but not when they walked at a brisk pace or performed tests of standing balance.

BACKGROUND: Blood clot (BC) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been successfully used to biologically treat immature roots. It is nowadays considered the treatment of choice. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the ability of PRF and BC scaffolds to enhance regeneration of disinfected root canals and healing of apical periodontitis within experimentally enlarged canal apices of dog teeth. METHODS: Forty-eight root canals in 28 mandibular premolars from 4 healthy adult dogs were experimentally infected and developed apical periodontitis. The teeth were randomly divided into a control (untreated) group, a disinfection only group, a group that received disinfection and a BC scaffold, and a group that received disinfection and a BC + PRF scaffold. Healing of the apical radiolucency was evaluated by conventional radiography, micro-computed tomography, and histology after 3 months. The data were analyzed by χ2 test. RESULTS: Healing was achieved in 49% of roots as seen on radiograph and 43% as seen on micro-computed tomography. There was no significant between-group difference in the presence or absence of periapical radiolucency in the mesial roots when seen on conventional images (P = 0.255), but there was a significant difference in the distal roots (P = 0.001); similarly, on micro-computed tomography, there was no significant between-group difference in the mesial roots (P = 0.174) but there was a significant difference in the distal roots (P = 0.001). Histologically, apical closure was significantly not greater in the BC + PRF scaffold group than in the BC scaffold group (P = 0.001). Individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience progressive declines in movement capabilities, especially walking performance. The purpose of our study was to compare the amount of variance in walking performance that could be explained by the functional capabilities of lower leg muscles in persons with MS and a sex- and age-matched control group. Participants performed two walking tests (6-min walk and 25-ft walk), strength tests for the plantar flexor and dorsiflexor muscles, and steady submaximal (10% and 20% maximum) isometric contractions. High-density electromyography (EMG) was recorded during the steady contractions, and the signals were decomposed to identify the discharge times of concurrently active motor units. There were significant differences between the two groups in the force fluctuations during the steady contractions (force steadiness), the strength of the plantar flexor and dorsiflexor muscles, and the discharge characteristics during the steady contractions. Performance on the two walking tests by the MS group was moderately associated with force steadiness of the plantar flexor and dorsiflexor muscles; worse force steadiness was associated with poorer walking performance. In contrast, the performance of the control group was associated with muscle strength (25-ft test) and force steadiness of the dorsiflexors and variance in common input of motor units to the plantar flexors (6-min test). These findings indicate that a reduction in the ability to maintain a steady force during submaximal isometric contractions is moderately associated with walking performance of persons with MS.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The variance in walking endurance and walking speed was associated with force control of the lower leg muscles during submaximal isometric contractions in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). In contrast, the fast walking speed of a sex- and age-matched control group was associated with the strength of lower leg muscles. These findings indicate that moderate declines in the walking performance of persons with MS are more associated with impairments in force control rather than decreases in muscle strength.

BACKGROUND: Unknown cell-culture contaminants were described by Kajander and Ciftçioglu in 1998. These contaminants were called nanobacteria initially and later calcifying nanoparticles (CNPs). Their exact nature is unclear and controversial. CNPs have unique and unusual characteristics, which preclude placing them into any established evolutionary branch of life. AIM: The aim of this systematic review was to assess published data concerning CNPs since 1998 in general and in relation to dental diseases in particular. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) electronic and manual searches were conducted. Nanobacteria and calcifying nanoparticles were used as keywords. The search yielded 135 full-length papers. Further screening of the titles and abstracts that followed the review criteria resulted in 43 papers that met the study aim. CONCLUSION: The review showed that the existence of nanobacteria is still controversial. Some investigators have described a possible involvement of CNPs in pulpal and salivary gland calcifications, as well as the possible therapeutic use of CNPs in the treatment of cracked and/or eroded teeth.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the distribution of the non-syndromal supernumerary teeth (NSST) in a population of patients who attended the clinics of Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy (RCsDP), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study reviewed 1521 panoramic radiographs of Saudi and non-Saudi subjects who attended RCsDP clinic from November 2009 to November 2010. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, utilizing Chi-square. RESULTS: Eighteen (1.2%) patients were found to have NSST, comprising twelve males (66.7%), and six females (33.3%). The most common supernumerary teeth (ST) were the pre-molars six cases (33.3%), followed by the mesiodens, five cases (27.8%). The canines and distomolars three cases (16.6%) each respectively, while the least were the lateral incisors and paramolars of the two cases (11.1%) each. CONCLUSION: Consanguinity appeared to have a role in the development of hyperdontia in Saudi population because 13 cases (72.2%) out of 18 cases had consanguineous parents, while all patients having consanguineous parents had eumorphic ST.
