PURPOSE: To explore whether differences in choroidal thickness arise from nicotine consumption in healthy young individuals, specifically comparing the effects of nicotine gum to electronic cigarette (vaping), while maintaining a consistent 4 mg nicotine dosage. METHODS: In a randomized double-blinded prospective cross-sectional study, 20 healthy participants (mean age ± standard deviation: 23 ± 2.36 years) were randomly assigned to either the nicotine gum or vaping group. Choroidal thickness (ChT) measurements were conducted using optical coherence tomography (OCT) (Topcon 3D OCT-1 Maestro System) at baseline, 30, and 60 min after ingesting 4 mg of nicotine, with ChT measurements taken from five different horizontal areas. RESULTS: Neither the nicotine delivery method (gum or vaping) demonstrated a statistically significant impact on ChT mean scores among subjects in the five measured areas at baseline, 30, and 60 min (p > 0.05). However, significant differences were observed in ChT mean scores within subjects across the five areas (F (1.83, 72) = 36.43, p < 0.001), regardless of other study factors such as group, time, and visit (p > 0.05). A statistically significant interaction was identified between the factors of area and time concerning participants' ChT mean scores when stratified by the type of smoking (tobacco, vaping, and dual) (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: The results of this study revealed that nicotine, up to particular concentration of 4 mg, does not have a statistically significant vasoconstrictive effect on choroidal thickness, regardless of the delivery method, within the examined group. These findings offer valuable insights into the relationship between nicotine intake and choroidal dynamics in young adults.

PURPOSE: To investigate the variations in choroidal thinning between emmetropic and myopic subjects after caffeine intake. METHODS: Forty-five healthy participants (age mean ± standard deviation [SD]: 20.75 ± 1.6 years) recruited in a prospective cross-sectional study. They were divided into three groups, based on refractive error status, emmetropes (spherical equivalent [SE] -0.25 to +0.25D), myopes (SE ≥-0.50D to ˂-6.00D), and high myopes (SE ≥-6.00D). The participants underwent choroidal thickness [ChT] measurements using optical coherence tomography [OCT] (Topcon 3D OCT-1 Maestro System) at baseline, 20, 40, and 60 minutes after consuming 200 mg of caffeine. The measurements of ChT were taken from five different areas horizontally. RESULTS: Compared to baseline measurement, the ChT significantly decreased after 200 mg caffeine intake in all conditions ( P < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in ChT at baseline between the refractive groups ( χ2 (2)=6.548, P = 0.038) as the high myope group showed lesser horizontal ChT within Nasal at (1 mm) area compared to the myope group ( P = 0.032), however, no other significant differences in mean scores of horizontal ChT at baseline were found. The thinning in ChT in the high myope group was lesser compared to both emmetrope and myope groups; however, it was not statistically significant ( P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the reduction in ChT due to caffeine consumption is not significantly affected by the refractive status of the eye. Thus, it is safe to hypothesize that the vascular part of the choroid behaves identically to vasoconstrictive in both emmetropic and myopic eyes. The choroidal thinning found in myopic and high myopic eyes and/or the reduced choroidal vascularity index were not apparent in this study. Therefore, further longitudinal studies recruiting greater numbers of participants, including myopes and high myopes, and measuring both vascular and stromal layers to investigate such variations are warranted.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a significant health concern, often leading to fragility fractures and severely impacting the quality of life in post-menopausal women. Studies evaluating the effects of osteoporosis and resultant fractures on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Saudi women are lacking. This study aimed to assess the relationship between osteoporosis and fracture and physical, psychological, social, and environmental HRQoL domains in post-menopausal Saudi women. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study conducted in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, 158 post-menopausal Saudi women completed HRQoL surveys using the validated Arabic WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Data on socioeconomics, comorbidities, and fracture history were gathered. Descriptive statistics delineated sample characteristics. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests identified differences in HRQoL across socioeconomic and clinical categories. Multivariate regression analyses determined factors independently related to HRQoL. RESULTS: Of 158 women surveyed, 39% had a history of osteoporotic fracture. Foot (35%), hand (31%), and vertebral (10%) fractures were the most frequent. Women over 70 had significantly lower physical HRQoL than those aged 45-55 (p<0.001). Unemployed and lower-income women showed poorer HRQoL across domains (p<0.01). Vertebral and hand fractures were negatively related to physical and psychological health (p<0.05). Chronic diseases like hypertension and rheumatoid arthritis reduced HRQoL (p<0.01). In regression analyses, older age, vertebral fracture, physical inactivity, long-term hormone therapy, and unemployment emerged as determinants of poorer HRQoL (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Osteoporosis and resultant fragility fractures, especially in vertebral and hand bones, led to substantial impairments in physical, social, psychological, and environmental HRQoL in Saudi women. Modifiable risk factors like physical inactivity and long-term hormone use also affected HRQoL. Targeted screening and multidomain interventions for disadvantaged women with osteoporosis are warranted to improve functioning and quality of life.

Background This study aimed to analyze the health and demographic characteristics of blood donors in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and assess the prevalence and correlation of two markers related to hepatitis B infection: hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-hepatitis B virus surface antibody (HBsAb). Materials and methods The study used a retrospective design and collected data from the Central Blood Bank in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, in 2022. The sample size was 7,875 blood donors. The study used various methods, such as serological testing, nucleic acid testing (NAT), and statistical analysis. The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation to examine the relationships between different variables. Results The predominant age group was 29-39 years, accounting for 46.9% of the total donors. In terms of blood types, O+ve was the most common, representing 40.3% of the donors. The investigation into infectious markers revealed overall low levels of reactivity among donors. For HBsAg, a marker of active hepatitis B infection, only 0.36% of the units were reactive. Conversely, the anti-HBsAb, which indicates immunity to hepatitis B, was reactive in 6.83% of the units. The correlation analysis illuminated some critical relationships. The total number of units tested had a statistically significant, albeit weak, positive relationship with HBsAg reactivity, shown by a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.030 and a p-value of 0.008. Conversely, the total number of units tested and anti-HBsAb reactivity showed a moderate negative correlation, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of -0.437 and a p-value of less than 0.001. However, no significant correlation was identified between HBsAg and anti-HBsAb reactivity, indicating that active infection and immunity status might not be directly linked. Conclusion This extensive study provides in-depth insights into the sociodemographic characteristics of blood donors and the prevalence of key infectious markers within this population. It underlines the imperative of rigorous screening of blood units, particularly given the low immunity levels to hepatitis B identified. Also, the study showed the importance of screening blood units and vaccinating people against hepatitis B. It also suggested the need for more research on blood safety and infection-immunity relationships.

BACKGROUND: With evolving diabetes technology, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and time in range have been advanced as critical measurements to assess complications. They have shown improvement in A1C levels and decreased episodes of blood glucose extrusion. AIMS: This study aimed to assess the awareness and utilization of blood glucose time in range and its effectiveness in reducing the risk of blood glucose extrusion and improving blood glucose metrics among patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A retrospective study included 342 patients who met the inclusion criteria and were using the CGM, aiming for a TIR of 70% daily. Glycemic control was followed using TIR data, blood glucose extrusion frequency (including hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia events), active sensor time, average blood glucose, and glucose management indicator (GMI) levels. RESULTS: A total of 342 individuals participated in this study, the majority of whom were below 18 years of age (62.3%). The hypoglycemic frequency was significantly increased compared to the baseline, and most participants experienced hypoglycemia events (p = 0.0001). The incidences increased over time, with 90.9% and 93% having hypoglycemia at 60 and 90 days (p = 0.0001), respectively. The active scan and sensor time were not followed, which led to the blood glucose target not being achieved, with no improvement throughout the study. Consequently, no improvement occurred in glycemic control. CONCLUSION: CGM technology has been promising and proven effective in improving glycemic. However, our study did not show these benefits as expected, which could be explained by the underutilization and improper use of the CGM.

Background: Nutritional rickets remains a significant concern in certain countries, with increasing prevalence attributed to factors such as limited sunlight exposure and undernourishment. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with rickets due to nutritional deficiency in children from Jazan Province, southwestern Saudi Arabia. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using descriptive data from medical records at a tertiary hospital in Jazan Province. Records of patients diagnosed with rickets between January 2010 and December 2020 were analyzed. Symptomatic rickets cases from pediatric clinics were included, and diagnoses were based on biochemical and clinical tests. Risk factors were assessed using patient medical records. Data were analyzed using percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Results: The study included 84 patients with rickets (53 females and 31 males), primarily between 11-18 years old. The mean body mass index (BMI) of the participants was 21.21. The most common risk factor was nutritional deficiencies, including vitamin D deficiency or calcium deficiency, with 75 patients reporting a family history of vitamin D deficiency. The children had limited sunlight exposure and low levels of calcium and vitamin D. Malnutrition was identified as the highest risk factor for rickets in the study population. Conclusion: Nutritional rickets appears to be prevalent in the Jazan Province, emphasizing the need for government organizations to address this preventable disease. Adequate sun exposure and recommended dietary vitamin D intake are crucial to prevent rickets, as this study detected inadequate levels of calcium and vitamin D in children. National studies are required to further identify risk factors and develop appropriate strategies.

BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a medical emergency which can range in severity from a mild, self-limiting condition to a catastrophic event that results in multiorgan failure. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of AP. METHODS: This study included all patients diagnosed with AP at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, a tertiary care hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 2017 and 2021. The main aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of AP in patients who present to the hospital with abdominal pain. Secondary objectives included analyzing the causes, complications, severity, and outcomes of the patients. RESULTS: A total of 67 patients were included. AP constituted 11.6% of all cases of patients presenting to the hospital with abdominal pain. Only seven patients presented with severe AP, which was significantly associated with advanced age (over 60 years old). The primary causes of AP were biliary and idiopathic pancreatitis, accounting for 80.6% of the cases. The most frequent complications observed were peripancreatic fluid collection and atelectasis, which occurred in 40.3% of cases. CONCLUSION: AP is a prevalent condition in patients with abdominal pain, with biliary pancreatitis being the leading cause of the disease. The majority of patients exhibited mild to moderate severity of symptoms and experienced positive outcomes when treated appropriately.

Patients diagnosed with a chronic disease are at higher risk of influenza complications. This investigation aimed to estimate influenza vaccine uptake rates among healthy subjects and patients with chronic diseases, and to identify barriers to and facilitators of its uptake. This study was a cross-sectional investigation that targeted the general population in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected via online platforms between October and November 2022. Data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire that assessed the demographics, influenza vaccine uptake, and factors associated with the uptake. A chi-squared test was used to investigate factors associated with the uptake of the influenza vaccine. A total of 825 adult subjects participated in the current investigation. The proportion of male participants was higher (61%) compared to females (38%). The mean age of the participants was 36, with a standard deviation of 10.5. Nearly 30% of the sample reported being diagnosed with a chronic disease. Among the recruited sample, 576 (69.8%) reported having ever received the influenza vaccine, and only 222 participants (27%) indicated that they receive the influenza vaccination annually. Only history of being diagnosed with a chronic disease was statistically associated with the history of ever receiving the influenza vaccine (p < 0.001). Among the 249 participants with a chronic disease, only 103 (41.4%) ever received the influenza vaccine and only 43 (17.3%) of them received the vaccine annually. The main barrier to the uptake was fear of side effects due to the vaccination. A minority of the participants indicated that they were motivated by a healthcare worker to have the vaccine. This suggests an area for further investigation to assess the involvement of healthcare workers in motivating their patients with chronic diseases to have the vaccine.

The gold-standard approach for diagnosing and confirming Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). This method, however, is inefficient in detecting previous or dormant viral infections. The presence of antigen-specific antibodies is the fingerprint and cardinal sign for diagnosis and determination of exposure to infectious agents including Corona virus disease-2019 (COVID-19). This cross-sectional study examined the presence of SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) among asymptomatic blood donors in Makkah region. A total of 4368 asymptomatic blood donors were enrolled. They were screened for spike-specific IgG using ELISA and COVID-19 RNA by real-time PCR. COVID-19 IgG was detected among 2248 subjects (51.5%) while COVID-19-RNA was detected among 473 (10.8%) subjects. The IgG frequency was significantly higher among males and non-Saudi residents (p < 0.001 each) with no significant variation in IgG positivity among blood donors with different blood groups. In addition, COVID-19 RNA frequency was significantly higher among donors below 40-years old (p = 0.047, χ2 = 3.95), and non-Saudi residents (p = 0.001, χ2 = 304.5). The COVID-19 IgG levels were significantly higher among the RNA-positive donors (p = 001), and non-Saudi residents (p = 0.041), with no variations with age or blood group (p > 0.05). This study reveals a very high prevalence of COVID-19 IgG and RNA among asymptomatic blood donors in Makkah, Saudi Arabia indicating a high exposure rate of the general population to COVID-19; particularly foreign residents. It sheds light on the spread on COVID-19 among apparently healthy individuals at the beginning of the pandemic and could help in designing various control measures to minimize viral spread.

Contraception is one of the common methods of family planning. The oral contraceptive pill (OCP) is among the most effective methods of contraception. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of oral contraception use and its side effects among women in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study was carried out among adult women 18 years and older in the Jazan region. A pre-tested questionnaire was used to assess their demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, previous experience, and pattern of OCP usage. Descriptive analysis and a logistic regression model were used to analyse data. About 570 questionnaires were distributed and achieved a 98.3% response rate. The majority of women participants were between 18 and 25 years old, and 51.4% of the respondents reported that they had previously used or were using OCP. We found that women had good knowledge and a positive attitude towards OCP, with more than half of the users preferring them over other contraceptive methods. This study indicates that attitude, knowledge, and prior experience of OCP have no significant effect on the usage pattern of OCP among women with relatively high socioeconomic status in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke on the surface roughness and color stability of three different soft denture liners. METHODS: Three commonly used commercially available, chair-side, long-term vinyl polysiloxane soft denture liners were used for this study [Sofreliner Tough (S) Soft, Silagum Comfort Soft Relining, and GC Reline Soft\. Thirty disk-shaped specimens of each material, with a diameter of 25 mm and thickness of 2 mm, were fabricated. Initial color and surface roughness readings were recorded. The specimens of each group were randomly divided into two groups (n= 15): the control group (C) and the study group (S). The control group specimens were stored in distilled water and the study group samples were exposed to cigarette smoke in a custom-made smoking chamber. Final color and surface roughness readings were recorded. A single operator performed all the measurements. The differences in color and surface roughness were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA, post-hoc Tukey test, and paired t-test. For all the analyses, a P< 0.05 was regarded as statistically significant. RESULTS: After exposure to smoke, all groups showed a significantly perceptible color change (ΔE > 3.7). The greatest color change was seen in the Silagum group (ΔE= 8.94 ± 0.42), followed by the Sofreliner group (ΔE= 7.85 ± 0.47), with the least change in the GC reline group (ΔE= 3.87 ± 0.46). The mean color change after smoke exposure showed a statistically significant difference among all three study groups. The highest change in surface roughness was observed in the Silagum group (ΔR= 0.687 ± 0.14) followed by the GC reline group (ΔR= 0.265 ± 0.12), with the least change in the Sofreliner group (ΔR= 0.238 ± 0.06). There was a statistically significant difference between each group before and after exposure to smoke. Exposure to cigarette smoke caused significant changes in the color and surface roughness of all three soft denture liners tested in this study. The extent of these changes varied for each material. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Proper selection of soft denture liners is essential to avoid premature replacement, due to esthetic and hygiene reasons in cigarette smokers.

PURPOSE: Depression is one of the most common psychological disorders. The nutritional etiology of the depression proposes that vitamin D may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of depression. Further, vitamin D deficiency has been found to aggravate depression in animals. Therefore, vitamin D treatment might be a potential therapeutic aid in depression management. This study aimed to explore the antidepressant effects of vitamin D in a Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)-induced depression model. METHODS: Thirty-six mice were randomly assigned to short-term and long-term experimental groups. In each group, mice were randomly subcategorized into three subgroups: 1. control (received vehicle), 2. BCG (received BCG [107 CFU/mouse]), and 3. BCG + vitamin D (received vitamin D [60.000 IU/kg] before BCG [107 CFU/mouse] inoculation). After completion of the two experimental periods (3 days for the short-term group and 2 weeks for the long-term group), the mice underwent three behavioral tests: locomotor activity, the forced swimming test (FST), and the tail suspension test (TST). RESULTS: Locomotor activity did not significantly differ among the subgroups in either the long-term or short-term groups. In the short-term group, the total immobility time on the FST was decreased in the vitamin D-treated group compared to the BCG group. However, in the TST, no significant difference was found between the vitamin D-treated group and the BCG group. In the long-term group, the immobility time on the FST was decreased in the vitamin D-treated group compared to the BCG group. Similarly, the total immobility time on the TST was also significantly lower in the vitamin D-treated mice than in the BCG-treated mice. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D is useful in the management of depressive behavior. The potential role of vitamin D in the etiology of depression should be investigated in future work.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis (AR) represent a global health problem, affecting 10-25% of the world population. There is clear evidence to support the concept that allergic diseases are influenced by genetic predisposition and environmental exposure. OBJECTIVES: To assess the severity and prevalence of AR among school children in Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study using a modified International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) questionnaire. RESULTS: The nasal blocking is considered to be one of the most common symptoms of AR. Regarding the frequency of AR-related symptoms which indicate severity in the last 12 months according to the gender, our statistical analysis results found that the severity regarding nasal symptoms varied from nasal block to disturbed sleep due to nasal block where 97 (6.9%) had nasal block, 109 (7.8%) had nasal block interfering with daily activities, 12.1% had nasal block resulting in breathing difficulties, and 67 (4.7%) had disturbed sleep due to nasal block/problem. About 258 (18.4%) of all population urgently visited the emergency department due to nasal problems. Sixty-four (4.5%) were admitted due to nasal problems and 92 (6.6%) missed school days due to nasal block. The prevalence in elementary and intermediate school was 209 (14.9) and 170 (12.2), respectively with P value of 0.013, according to gender of study population showed no statistical significance according to all parameters. The prevalence was higher among Saudi population, regarding education level the prevalence was higher among intermediate school children. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, it was clear that the prevalence of AR among Saudi school children is 27.1%. Living in urban areas, intermediate school education level, lowlander population are significant risk factors for the prevalence and severity of AR.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Obesity has become a global health care problem. In Saudi Arabia, up to 75% of adults are reportedly overweight. Morbid obesity has been associated with an increased risk of many comorbidities and mortality. Bariatric surgery is currently considered the most effective treatment option for morbid obesity. However, there are many concerns regarding the short and long-term complications of weight reduction surgery. It is unclear whether the general population is adequately aware of these risks. Therefore, we aimed to assess awareness of the general population of bariatric surgery complications. Although effective, bariatric surgery has been associated with many acute complications, reported in a range of 0.3% to 8% of operations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study between July and August of 2017 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. We used a 26-item, Arabic, electronically distributed questionnaire, to examine public awareness of the acute complications of bariatric surgery. Hypothesis testing was used to examine associations. RESULTS: In total, 624 questionnaires were completed electronically. Mean age of participants was 25 (±13.2) and 66% were females. Of the surveyed population, 64% reported being aware of acute complications of bariatric surgery. Participants who had previously undergone a bariatric operation had a higher degree of awareness when compared to those who had not undergone a bariatric operation before (80.4% vs. 61.3%, P < 0.001). Females had higher awareness compared to males (70.8% vs. 52.1%, P < 0.001). Awareness of complications was not statistically different when stratified by level of education (P = 0.131) but occupation predicted awareness (P = 0.007). CONCLUSION: Two-thirds of the general population appears to be aware of the potential acute complications associated with bariatric surgery. Furthermore, awareness seems to be higher in females, individuals who had previously undergone weight reduction surgery, and health care workers.

RATIONALE: Traumatic bilateral facet dislocation in the lumbar (L) spine has rarely been reported. All reported cases were presented with acute facet dislocation. However, we present the first case of delayed bilateral facet dislocation at L4-5. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 34-year-old woman presented with back pain after a head-on collision. The patient was treated conservatively for 3 months with rigid orthosis and activity restriction. Even after this conservative treatment, she continued to suffer from persistent back pain that radiated down her left leg and a progressively kyphotic posture. DIAGNOSES: Initial imaging studies revealed a fracture of the left L5 superior articular process with a posterior ligament complex (PLC) injury. Subsequent radiographs showed the locked facet dislocation with kyphotic changes. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent surgical reduction and fusion, and the operative findings revealed the L4-5 bilateral facet dislocation and rupture of the PLC at the index level. OUTCOMES: After surgical reduction and fusion at L4-5 by posterior interbody fusion, we achieved a satisfactory clinical outcome. LESSONS: Injury of the PLC in the lower lumbar region deserves careful attention for the development of sequelae. The anatomic transition from lordosis to kyphosis, in the lumbosacral region may be related to this type of injury.

BACKGROUND: The use of patient simulators in ophthalmic education appears limited. This study examines the effects of the addition of the 'Virtual Refractor' patient simulator learning activity into a short unit preparing students to determine the power of the spectacle lenses required by patients in a clinic. METHODS: Twenty-four year one optometry students were randomly assigned to either the simulator-intervention group (n = 12) or the non-intervention group. All students attended tutorials on refraction and the use of a refractor-head. Simulator-intervention students additionally attended a tutorial on the Virtual Refractor. All answered a questionnaire concerning time spent studying, perceived knowledge and confidence. Twenty-four short-sighted patients were recruited. Two refractions per student were timed and the accuracy compared with that of an experienced optometrist. RESULTS: Ten students from each group completed the study. Students who used the simulator were significantly (p < 0.05) more accurate at a clinical level (within 0.22 ± 0.22 DS, 95 per cent CI 0.12-0.32) than those who did not (within 0.60 ± 0.67 DS, 95 per cent CI 0.29-0.92) and 13 per cent quicker (4.7 minutes, p < 0.05). Students who used the simulator felt more knowledgeable (p < 0.05) and confident (p < 0.05), but had spent more time reading about refraction and practised on the Virtual Refractor at home for 5.7 ± 1.3 hours. CONCLUSION: The Virtual Refractor has many features of high-fidelity medical simulation known to lead to effective learning and it also offers flexible independent learning without a concomitant increase in the student time-burden. The improved accuracy and speed on first patient encounters found in this study validates the use of this patient simulator as a useful bridge for students early in training to successfully transfer theoretical knowledge prior to entering the consulting room. The translational benefits resulting from compulsory learning activities on a patient simulator can lead to reduced demands on infrastructure and clinical supervision.

The H1N1 influenza virus is a serious threat to human population. Oseltamivir and Zanamivir are known antiviral drugs for swine flu with observed side effects. These drugs are viral neuraminidase and hemagglutinin inhibitor prevents early virus multiplication by blocking sialic acid cleavage on host cells. Therefore, it is of interest to identify naturally occurring novel compounds to control viral growth. Thus, H1N1 proteins (neuraminidase and hemagglutinin) were screened with phytocompounds isolated from Tulsi plant (Ocimum sanctum L.) using molecular docking tools. This identified Apigenin as an alternative to Oseltamivir and Zanamivir with improved predicted binding properties. Hence, it is of interest to consider this compound for further in vitro and in vivo evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Nigella Sativa (NS) is an herb from the Ranunculaceae family that exhibits numerous medicinal properties and has been used as important constituent of many complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). The ability of NS to kill cancer cells such as PC3, HeLa and hepatoma cells is well established. However, our understanding of the mode of death caused by NS remains nebulous. The objective of this study was to gain further insight into the mode and mechanism of death caused by NS in breast cancer MCF-7 cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) were treated with a methanolic extract of NS, and a dose- and time-dependent study was performed. The IC50 was calculated using a Cell Titer Blue® viability assay assay, and evidence for DNA fragmentation was obtained by fluorescence microscopy TUNEL assay. Gene expression was also profiled for a number of apoptosis-related genes (Caspase-3, -8, -9 and p53 genes) through qPCR. RESULTS: The IC50 of MCF-7 cells was 62.8 µL/mL. When MCF-7 cells were exposed to 50 µL/mL and 100 µL/mL NS for 24 h, 48 h and 72 h, microscopic examination (TUNEL assay) revealed a dose- and time-dependent increase in apoptosis. Similarly, the expression of the Caspase-3, -8, -9 and p53 genes increased significantly according to the dose and time. CONCLUSIONS: NS induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells through both the p53 and caspase pathways. NS could potentially represent an alternative source of medicine for breast cancer therapy.

PURPOSE: To determine whether variation in ocular rigidity (a quantity that describes the elastic properties of the globe) affects the characteristics of horizontal saccadic eye movements. METHODS: Thirty-three young, visually healthy subjects participated with informed consent in the study. Axial length was measured using the IOLMaster ocular biometer. Ocular rigidity coefficients were determined using Schiotz tonometry. Horizontal saccades were stimulated randomly to 40° in 10° steps. Eye movements were recorded continuously at a sampling rate of 60 Hz using the Viewpoint video-eyetracker. RESULTS: Peak velocity increased significantly with increasing ocular rigidity (F [2,263] = 30.635, P < 0.001). Time to peak velocity (F [2,263] = 27.723, P < 0.001) and total response time (F [2,263] = 21.133, P < 0.001) decreased significantly with increasing ocular rigidity. Ocular rigidity was significantly positively correlated with peak velocity (R(2) = 0.67, P < 0.001), and significantly negatively correlated with time to peak velocity (R(2) = 0.64, P < 0.001), and total response time (R(2) = 0.62, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The known relationship of ocular rigidity with myopia can be extended to shorter hyperopic eyes, which are found to have higher ocular rigidity. The dynamic characteristics of saccadic eye movements are found to vary systematically with ocular rigidity. These findings suggest that the structural characteristics of the eye are an important factor in determining dynamic characteristics of eye movements.

The efficacy of cowdung, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA)-biofertilizer, and Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU)-biofungicide, alone or in combination, was evaluated for controlling foot rot disease of lentil. The results exhibited that BINA-biofertilizer and BAUbiofungicide (peat soil-based Rhizobium leguminosarum and black gram bran-based Trichoderma harzianum) are compatible and have combined effects in controlling the pathogenic fungi Fusarium oxysporum and Sclerotium rolfsii, which cause the root rot of lentil. Cowdung mixing with soil (at 5 t/ha) during final land preparation and seed coating with BINA-biofertilizer and BAU-biofungicide (at 2.5% of seed weight) before sowing recorded 81.50% field emergence of lentil, which showed up to 19.85% higher field emergence over the control. Post-emergence deaths of plants due to foot rot disease were significantly reduced after combined seed treatment with BINA-biofertilizer and BAU-biofungicide. Among the treatments used, only BAU-biofungicide as the seed treating agent resulted in higher plant stand (84.82%). Use of BINA-biofertilizer and BAU-biofungicide as seed treating biocontrol agents and application of cowdung in the soil as an organic source of nutrient resulted in higher shoot and root lengths, and dry shoot and root weights of lentil. BINA-biofertilizer significantly increased the number of nodules per plant and nodules weight of lentil. Seeds treating with BAUbiofungicide and BINA-biofertilizer and soil amendment with cowdung increased the biomass production of lentil up to 75.56% over the control.
