RESUMO

Objectives: Chitosan (CTS) has been a popular option for scaffold fabrication because of its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antimicrobial and nonimmunogenic effects. However, it is of limited function, due to its low mechanical strength and its solubility in acidified media. These limitations could be overcome by its blending with PVA and incorporation with bioactive materials to improve its mechanical properties and tissue regeneration capability. Methods: Carbon based nanomaterials, such as graphene oxide (GO) incorporated with CTS/PVA blend to improve composite-scaffold stability. GO nanoparticles were chemically prepared and fully characterized. Different concentrations of both CTS and nano-GO were used for the fabrication of CTS/PVA/GO nanocomposite films through the solvent-casting method. The mechanical properties, thermal stability biodegradation, and swelling of the nanocomposite films were evaluated after characterization by XRD, FTIR and SEM, to detect the effect of GO incorporation in the scaffold to select the suitable dental application. Results: A better performance was observed in thermal stability, biodegradation, and water resistance after GO addition into CTS/PVA scaffolds. Regarding mechanical properties, groups were assessed by Kruskal Wallis test afterward Dunn's post hoc test. There was no significant difference in tensile strength between the nanocomposite films of CTS (2%) and CTS (3%). The tensile strength decreased after addition of nano-GO at different concentrations. The elastic modulus significantly increased when (1%) GO was added into the 1CTS (2%):1PVA. Conclusions: CTS/PVA/GO nanocomposite can be used in dental hard tissue engineering, as the incorporation of GO into the CTS/PVA polymer blend improves its properties which is regarded as the critical concentrations of CTS and GO.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyse lung tumour motion and to investigate the correlation between the internal tumour motion acquired from four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) and the motion of an external surrogate. METHODS: A data set of 363 4DCT images was analysed. Tumours were classified based on their anatomical lobes. The recorded gross tumour volume (GTV) information included the centroid GTV motion in the superior-inferior, anteroposterior and left-right directions, and in three-dimensions (3D). For the internal/external correlation, the RPM surrogate breathing signals of 260 patients were analysed via an in-house script. The external motion was correlated with the 3D centroid motion, and the maximum tumour motion via Spearman's correlation. The effect of tumour volume on the amount of motion was evaluated. RESULTS: The greatest 3D tumour amplitude was found for tumours located in the lower part of the lung, with a maximum of 26.7 mm. The Spearman's correlation of the internal 3D motion was weak in the upper (r = 0.21) and moderate in the middle (r = 0.51) and the lower (r = 0.52) lobes. There was no obvious difference in the correlation coefficients between the maximum tumour displacement and the centroid motion. No correlation was found between the tumour volume and the magnitude of motion. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that tumour location can be a good predictor of its motion. However, tumour size is a poor predictor of the motion. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: This knowledge of the distribution of tumour motion throughout the thoracic regions will be valuable to research groups investigating the refinement of motion management strategies.

A batch bio-sorption experiment was conducted on Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. wood-branch in the form of woody sawdust nanoparticles (nSD-KF) to evaluate their potential efficiency as phosphate bio-sorption capacity. The operating parameters of phosphate bio-sorption including contact time, initial concentration, pH, temperature, dosage, size, competing ion, and the possible mechanisms responsible for phosphate removal from water were investigated. The nSD-KF were green-synthesized by ball mill grinder and phosphate solutions with various concentrations were performed. The results revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) value of nSD-KF was 50,000 µg/g. In addition, the removal efficiency of nSD-KF significantly increased with the increase of initial phosphate concentration, contact time, temperature, and dosage. However, it decreased with the increase of pH and in double-system solution with the presence of ammonium ions. At the application study, the nSD-KF successfully removed 87.82% and 92.09% of phosphate from real agricultural wastewater in a batch experiment and in a column experiment, respectively. Adsorption efficiency of nSD-KF for phosphate increased after the first and second regeneration cycles, but it decreased after the third and fourth cycles. The poor to moderate phosphate desorption from nSD-KF sorbent indicates the stability of phosphate bound to nSD-KF materials. Regardless, biodegradability of nSD-KF-loaded phosphate is possible, and it will be a good source of phosphate to a plant when added to the agricultural soil as a supplemental application of fertilizer. In conclusion, nSD-KF could be considered as a promising lignocellulosic biomaterial used for the removal of phosphate from waters as bio-sorption process.

Repeated subchronic treatment with the NMDA-receptor antagonist, phencyclidine, causes behavioural changes in rats, which resemble cognitive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. However, its effects on behaviours modelling positive symptoms are less clear. This study investigated whether subchronic phencyclidine pretreatment affected latent inhibition: impaired conditioning following repeated preexposure of the to-be-conditioned stimulus. Female Lister-hooded rats were pretreated with phencyclidine or saline twice/day for 5 days, then remained drug-free for 10 days before latent inhibition testing. Saline pretreated animals showed latent inhibition, as expected. However, phencyclidine pretreated animals showed no latent inhibition: the effect of preexposure was attenuated, with no change in basic learning. Thus subchronic phencyclidine pretreatment does disrupt latent inhibition, and, importantly, this occurs after withdrawal from the drug, implicating changes in brain function enduring well beyond the time that the drug is present in the brain. In a separate task, discrimination of a novel object was significantly impaired by phencyclidine pretreatment confirming that five days of subchronic pretreatment was sufficient to invoke behavioural impairment previously reported after seven days pretreatment.
