RESUMO

The purpose of the study was to compare the clinical and radiological efficacy of 2-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and 1-level anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) in the treatment of two-segment degenerative stenosis of the cervical spine in elderly patients. The retrospective study included 74 elderly patients (over 60 years old), two cohorts were identified: the 1st (n=38) - patients who underwent staged 2-level ACDF; the 2nd (n=36) - patients operated on using the technique of 1-level ACCF. For comparative analysis, we used general information about patients (gender, age, body mass index, physical status according to ASA), characteristics of surgical interventions (time of surgery, volume of blood loss), features of the postoperative period, clinical data, radiological outcomes, and the presence of complications. Analysis of the results was carried out in a minimum period of 36 months. As a result, it was found that 2-level ACDF in the treatment of two-segment degenerative stenosis of the cervical spine in older patients is associated with less blood loss and the level of local pain syndrome. At the same time, better clinical outcomes and fewer revision interventions after 1-level ACCF were recorded in the long-term postoperative period.

RESUMO

Professional athletes have a high basic level of physical fitness and significant motivation for returning to previous rhythm of functional activity within the shortest period after trauma without deterioration of baseline level of sportsmanship. Despite the well-presented results of lumbar spine fusion in general population, these data among professional athletes are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results of minimally invasive lumbar fusion in professional athletes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study included 27 athletes (19 men and 8 women) aged 29 (26; 34) years after minimally invasive lumbar spine decompression and fusion via anterior, lateral and posterior approaches. Total lumbar lordosis, degenerative changes in adjacent segment, area of multifidus muscle, perioperative complications and timing of sports rehabilitation were analyzed within 3-5 (mean 4) years after surgery. RESULTS: We found an increase of total lumbar lordosis from 35.2° to 44.1° (p=0.02), no significant muscle atrophy (<30%) and degeneration of adjacent segment (p>0.05). There were 5 perioperative complications (18.5%). Mean period of sports rehabilitation was 14 (9; 17) weeks. One (3.7%) patient did not return to his previous sports career. CONCLUSION: Minimally invasive short-segment lumbar interbody fusion in professional athletes is characterized by low risk of fixation element failure, no significant degeneration of adjacent level and postoperative muscle atrophy. This procedure ensures early rehabilitation and returning to sports.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study changes in the parameters of endogenous intoxication using the level of substances of low and medium molecular weight in the oral fluid in patients with catarrhal stomatitis, which got developed after the acute drug poisoning. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To determine the degree of intoxication, we studied the concentrations of low and medium molecular weight substances (SLMMW) in the oral fluid of patients. We studied the saliva of 20 patients (13 men and 7 women, average age 39 years). The control was done against the oral fluid of 10 healthy individuals. The studies were conducted in a control group consisting of 10 healthy individuals with intact oral mucosa and two groups of patients (20 patients in total) with drug poisoning. The first of these two groups of patients included 8 individuals without pathological changes in the oral mucosa, while the second group consisted of 12 patients diagnosed with catarrhal stomatitis that developed after acute drug poisoning. RESULTS: It became known that endogenous intoxication develops in the oral fluid of patients with acute drug poisoning, which is manifested by a statistically significant increase in the content of SLMMW in comparison with practically healthy individuals (15.3%). And the total level of SLMMW in the oral fluid of patients with acute drug stomatitis and catarrhal stomatitis has increased by 42.3% relative to the data of practically healthy individuals. CONCLUSION: Studies have shown the need for monitoring the oral cavity in patients with acute drug poisoning, with the aim of timely detection of pathologies of the oral mucosa in them and the appointment of complex treatment.

RESUMO

With an increase in the average life expectancy of the population, some histological types of symptomatic IEMT are more common in elderly and senile patients. Of the 45 patients included in the study, 27 (60%) patients underwent a microneurosurgical resection of the tumor tissue using minimally invasive techniques (minimally invasive group) and 18 (40%) to patients using the classical open method (open group). The duration of operative intervention in both cohorts of respondents is comparable and is 245,4±117,1 min and 261,1±108,6 min for open and minimally invasive groups, respectively (p=0,71). The volume of blood loss in the minimally invasive group of patients (139,6±44,6 ml) was statistically significantly lower than in the open technique group (539,2±127,5 ml) (p<0,01). The total degree of resection of tumor tissue was achieved in 97,4% of patients in the open group and 92,8% in the minimally invasive group (p=0,81). The incidence of recurrence of IEMT in the study cohort of patients was 6,6%. At the same time, in 1 case the relapse of IEMT was verified in an open group of patients and in 2 cases in patients of the minimally invasive group. The average duration of hospitalization of patients of the minimally invasive group was 9,6±2,7 days, and the open group 13,5±3,1 (p<0,01). The comparison of the incidence of adverse events between the two groups of patients did not show significant differences (p=0,61).

RESUMO

A QCD analysis is reported of ATLAS data on inclusive W(±) and Z boson production in pp collisions at the LHC, jointly with ep deep-inelastic scattering data from HERA. The ATLAS data exhibit sensitivity to the light quark sea composition and magnitude at Bjorken x∼0.01. Specifically, the data support the hypothesis of a symmetric composition of the light quark sea at low x. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea quark distributions is determined to be 1.00(-0.28)(+0.25) at absolute four-momentum transfer squared Q(2)=1.9 GeV(2) and x=0.023.

RESUMO

This Letter describes a model-independent search for the production of new resonant states in photon+jet events in 2.11 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV. We compare the photon+jet mass distribution to a background model derived from data and find consistency with the background-only hypothesis. Given the lack of evidence for a signal, we set 95% credibility level limits on generic Gaussian-shaped signals and on a benchmark excited-quark (q*) model, excluding 2 TeV Gaussian resonances with cross section times branching fraction times acceptance times efficiency near 5 fb and excluding q* masses below 2.46 TeV, respectively.

RESUMO

A search for the decay of a light Higgs boson (120-140 GeV) to a pair of weakly interacting, long-lived particles in 1.94 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV recorded in 2011 by the ATLAS detector is presented. The search strategy requires that both long-lived particles decay inside the muon spectrometer. No excess of events is observed above the expected background and limits on the Higgs boson production times branching ratio to weakly interacting, long-lived particles are derived as a function of the particle proper decay length.

RESUMO

A search is presented for production of a heavy up-type quark (t') together with its antiparticle, assuming subsequent decay to a W boson and a b quark, t't[over ¯]'→W(+)bW(-)b[over ¯]. The search is based on 1.04 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at √[s]=7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data are analyzed in the lepton+jets final state, characterized by a high transverse momentum isolated electron or muon, high missing transverse momentum, and at least three jets. No significant excess of events above the background expectation is observed. A 95% C.L. lower limit of 404 GeV is set for the mass of the t' quark.

RESUMO

This Letter presents a search for pair production of heavy down-type quarks decaying via b' → Wt in the lepton + jets channel, as b'b' → W- tW+ t → bbW+ W- W+ W- → l± νbbqqqqqq. In addition to requiring exactly one lepton, large missing transverse momentum, and at least six jets, the invariant mass of nearby jet pairs is used to identify high transverse momentum W bosons. In data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb(-1) from pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector, a heavy down-type quark with mass less than 480 GeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level.

RESUMO

The results of a search for pair production of the scalar partners of bottom quarks in 2.05 fb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=7 TeV using the ATLAS experiment are reported. Scalar bottom quarks are searched for in events with large missing transverse momentum and two jets in the final state, where both jets are identified as originating from a bottom quark. In an R-parity conserving minimal supersymmetric scenario, assuming that the scalar bottom quark decays exclusively into a bottom quark and a neutralino, 95% confidence-level upper limits are obtained in the b(1) - χ(1)(0) mass plane such that for neutralino masses below 60 GeV scalar bottom masses up to 390 GeV are excluded.

RESUMO

The χ(b)(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb(-1), these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Υ(1S,2S) with Υ â†’ µ+ µ-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes χ(b)(1P,2P) → Υ(1S)γ, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530 ± 0.005(stat) ± 0.009(syst) GeV is also observed, in both the Υ(1S)γ and Υ(2S)γ decay modes. This structure is interpreted as the χ(b)(3P) system.

RESUMO

A search for the Higgs boson has been performed in the H→WW(*)→ℓ(+)νℓ(-)ν[over ¯] channel (ℓ=e/µ) with an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb(-1) of pp collisions at √s=7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events over the expected background is observed and limits on the Higgs boson production cross section are derived for a Higgs boson mass in the range 110 GeV

RESUMO

A measurement of the ZZ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.02 fb(-1) recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is presented. Twelve events containing two Z boson candidates decaying to electrons and/or muons are observed, with an expected background of 0.3 ± 0.3(stat)(-0.3)(+0.4)(syst) events. The cross section measured in a phase-space region with good detector acceptance and for dilepton masses within the range 66 to 116 GeV is σ(ZZ → ℓ+ ℓ- ℓ+ ℓ-)(fid) = 19.4(-5.2)(+6.3)(stat)(-0.7)(+0.9)(syst) ± 0.7(lumi) fb. The resulting total cross section for on-shell ZZ production, σ(ZZ)(tot) = 8.5(-2.3)(+2.7)(stat)(-0.3)(+0.4)(syst) ± 0.3(lumi) pb, is consistent with the standard model expectation of 6.5(-0.2)(+0.3) pb calculated at the next-to-leading order in QCD. Limits on anomalous neutral triple gauge boson couplings are derived.

RESUMO

A search for new phenomena in tt events with large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The measurement is based on 1.04 fb(-1) of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Contributions to this final state may arise from a number of standard model extensions. The results are interpreted in terms of a model where new top-quark partners are pair produced and each decay to an on-shell top (or antitop) quark and a long-lived undetected neutral particle. The data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations. A limit at 95% confidence level is set excluding a cross section times branching ratio of 1.1 pb for a top-partner mass of 420 GeV and a neutral particle mass less than 10 GeV. In a model of exotic fourth generation quarks, top-partner masses are excluded up to 420 GeV and neutral particle masses up to 140 GeV.

RESUMO

This paper presents a search for the t-channel exchange of an R-parity violating scalar top quark ([Formula: see text]) in the e±µ∓ continuum using 2.1 fb-1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector in [Formula: see text]pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Data are found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model backgrounds. Limits on R-parity-violating couplings at 95 % C.L. are calculated as a function of the scalar top mass ([Formula: see text]). The upper limits on the production cross section for pp→eµX, through the t-channel exchange of a scalar top quark, ranges from 170 fb for [Formula: see text] to 30 fb for [Formula: see text].

RESUMO

A measurement of the top-antitop production charge asymmetry AC is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb-1 of pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are selected with a single lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse momentum and at least four jets of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-quark. A kinematic fit is used to reconstruct the [Formula: see text] event topology. After background subtraction, a Bayesian unfolding procedure is performed to correct for acceptance and detector effects. The measured value of AC is [Formula: see text], consistent with the prediction from the MC@NLO Monte Carlo generator of AC =0.006±0.002. Measurements of AC in two ranges of invariant mass of the top-antitop pair are also shown.

RESUMO

The top quark mass has been measured using the template method in the [Formula: see text] channel based on data recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb-1. The analyses in the e+jets and µ+jets decay channels yield consistent results. The top quark mass is measured to be mtop=174.5±0.6stat±2.3syst GeV.

RESUMO

This letter reports on a search for hypothetical heavy neutrinos, N, and right-handed gauge bosons, WR, in events with high transverse momentum objects which include two reconstructed leptons and at least one hadronic jet. The results were obtained from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb-1 collected in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed. Excluded mass regions for Majorana and Dirac neutrinos are presented using two approaches for interactions that violate lepton and lepton-flavor numbers. One approach uses an effective operator framework, the other approach is guided by the Left-Right Symmetric Model. The results described in this letter represent the most stringent limits to date on the masses of heavy neutrinos and WR bosons obtained in direct searches.

RESUMO

A search for a heavy standard model Higgs boson decaying via H→ZZ→→ℓ(+)ℓ(-)νν, where ℓ=e, µ, is presented. It is based on proton-proton collision data at √s=7 TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in the first half of 2011 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb(-1). The data are compared to the expected standard model backgrounds. The data and the background expectations are found to be in agreement and upper limits are placed on the Higgs boson production cross section over the entire mass window considered; in particular, the production of a standard model Higgs boson is excluded in the region 340
