RESUMO

This paper proposes a novel cache replacement technique based on the notion of combining periodic popularity prediction with size caching. The popularity, size, and time updates characteristics are used to calculate the value of each cache item. When it comes to content replacement, the information with the least value is first eliminated. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the current algorithms in terms of cache hit rate and delay. The hit rate of the proposed scheme is 15.3% higher than GDS, 17.3% higher than MPC, 20.1% higher than LRU, 22.3% higher than FIFO, and 24.8% higher than LFU when 350 different categories of information are present. In real-world industrial applications such as including supply chain management, smart manufacturing, automation energy optimization, intelligent logistics transportation, and e-healthcare applications, it offers a foundation for the selection of caching algorithms.

Introduction Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major health threat, recently declared a crisis by the WHO, and recognized as one of the top 10 threats to global health. One of the strategies to curb AMR is interventional education to raise awareness. Therefore, this study evaluated the impact of interventional education on awareness of antimicrobial resistance among high school students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods This was a quasi-experimental study that included 120 high school students as a control group and 120 students as the experimental group. It used a questionnaire pre- and post-educational intervention, which was a lecture by trained healthcare workers. Pearson's Chi-square test and ANOVA were used to assess the effects of the intervention, and the p-value was set at <0.05 for significance. Results Over half (53.4%) of the controls reported no prior exposure to an antibiotic awareness campaign, compared to 46.6% in the intervention (experimental) group. Half of the participants in both groups were without a family relative who works in the healthcare sector. Almost half (51.2%) in the intervention group used antibiotics compared to 48.2% of controls; 53.3% in the control group reported self-medication compared to 46.7% in the intervention group. We found a statistically significant increase in the overall mean scores regarding knowledge of antibiotics resistance before and after the education intervention in the control group (p<0.001) and intervention group (p<0.001). Post-intervention, there was a significant reduction in the mean scores of misbeliefs about antibiotic use (p<0.001). We found an improvement in the perception scores toward AMR and antibiotic resistance post-educational intervention (P=0.008), and the perception difference remained significant between the two study groups (p=0.002). Conclusion These findings showed that interventional education effectively raises awareness, knowledge, and perceptions toward AMR. Therefore, public health, medical, and scientific professionals in Saudi Arabia are urged to emphasize education to fight AMR, in addition to other strategies.

Technological advancement to enhance tumor cells (TC) has allowed discovery of various cellular bio-markers: cancer stem cells (CSC), circulating tumor cells (CTC), and endothelial progenitor cells (EPC). These are responsible for resistance, metastasis, and premetastatic conditions of cancer. Detection of CSC, CTC, and EPC assists in early diagnosis, recurrence prediction, and treatment efficacy. This review describes various methods to detect TC subpopulations such as in vivo assays (sphere-forming, serial dilution, and serial transplantation), in vitro assays (colony-forming cells, microsphere, side-population, surface antigen staining, aldehyde dehydrogenase activity, and Paul Karl Horan label-retaining cells, surface markers, nonenriched and enriched detection), reporter systems, and other analytical methods (flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy/spectroscopy, etc.). The detailed information on methods to detect CSC, CTC, and EPC in this review will assist investigators in successful prognosis, diagnosis, and cancer treatment with greater ease.

Inherited platelet function disorder-18 (IPD-18) is a relatively new non-syndromic autosomal recessive bleeding disorder. It is characterized by deficient or dysfunctional CalDAG-GEFI protein. The distinctive feature of the disease is impaired platelet aggregation in response to multiple physiologic agonists. We here report a family with a platelet-type bleeding disorder and a novel mutation in the RASGRP2 gene. The overall bleeding score for the affected individuals was 15 and 12. Based on the initial diagnosis of Glanzmann thrombasthenia, targeted sequencing of integrin subunit alpha 2b and integrin subunit beta 3 encoding genes ITGA2B and ITGB3 were carried out in both affected members of a family. Sequence alignment failed to identify the disease-causing variant(s) in both genes. Therefore, whole exome sequencing in one affected individual was performed. Data analysis detected a novel homozygous missense variant (c.956C>T; p.Pro319Leu) in the exon 9 of the RASGRP2 gene. Five additional individuals of a family including both parents, an affected individual and two asymptomatic individuals were Sanger sequenced for the variant (c.956C>T). The variant segregates in the family in an autosomal recessive manner. Several in silico tools predicted the variant as pathogenic. Protein modeling studies suggest that the mutation (p.Pro319Leu) cause a conformational change in the loop structure of the RasGEF domain of the CalDAG-GEFI protein. Reported variants in the RasGEF domain impair expression and/or nucleotide exchange activity of CalDAG-GEFI protein and thus inhibit the activation of Rap1 protein required for platelet adhesion and hemostatic plug formation.

Efficient nonlinear optical frequency mixing in small volumes is key for future on-chip photonic devices. However, the generally low conversion efficiency severely limits miniaturization to nanoscale dimensions. Here we demonstrate that gradient-field effects can provide for an efficient, conventionally dipole-forbidden nonlinear response. We show that a longitudinal nonlinear source current can dominate the third-order optical nonlinearity of the free electron response in gold in the technologically important near-IR frequency range where the nonlinearities due to other mechanisms are particularly small. Using adiabatic nanofocusing to spatially confine the excitation fields, from measurements of the 2ω_{1}-ω_{2} four-wave mixing response as a function of detuning ω_{1}-ω_{2}, we find up to 10^{-5} conversion efficiency with a gradient-field contribution to χ_{Au}^{(3)} of up to 10^{-19} m^{2}/V^{2}. The results are in good agreement with the theory based on plasma hydrodynamics and underlying electron dynamics. The associated increase in the nonlinear conversion efficiency with a decreasing sample size, which can even overcompensate the volume decrease, offers a new approach for enhanced nonlinear nano-optics. This will enable more efficient nonlinear optical devices and the extension of coherent multidimensional spectroscopies to the nanoscale.
