RESUMO

Background: Nursing staff are in direct contact with the consequences of the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis. Design and Methods: Descriptive questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey of a sample of nursing staff working across Saudi Arabia. Results: The study included (n = 431) nursing professionals. Coronaphobia prevalence among the nursing staff was 80.3% [95% confidence interval (CI): 76.5-84%]. There were (36.7%) who had severe cornaphobia. Working in a clinical department and being Saudi national were associated with increased COVID-19 fear (estimate = 0.109, P = 0.0153 and P = 0.010, respectively). Conclusion: Hospital management in Saudi Arabia needs to acknowledge the high prevalence of coronaphobia during the current COVID-19 crisis among nursing staff.

Background: Depression in the elderly is a common, debilitating, and costly condition. Little is known about the prevalence and correlates of geriatric depression in Saudi Arabia. This study evaluates the prevalence of depression among the elderly and its associated risk factors. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based descriptive study was conducted on 259 elderly patients attending the Prince Mansour Military Hospital emergency department family medicine clinic in Taif city. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used. Results: The mean score was 4.4 (standard deviation [SD] = 2.56), ranging between 0 and 13. The median GDS score was 4. According to the results of this study, Cronbach's alpha for the GDS was 0.61 (95% confidence interval: 0.54-0.68). The prevalence of depression among the study participants was 43.2%. According to the GDS score categorization, 36.3% were mildly depressed, 4.2% were moderately depressed, and 2.7% were severely depressed. The adjusted effect was statistically significant for male gender (odds = 0.39, P < 0.001), older age (odds = 1.11, P = 0.007), diabetes mellitus (odds = 3.04, P = 0.02), asthma (odds = 25.94, P < 0.001), and renal failure (odds = 114.27, P = 0.03). Conclusion: Identification and treatment of geriatric depression should be prioritized by the family physicians in Saudi Arabia. Further research should focus on designing better culture-friendly geriatric depression screening tools.

Amphetamine users have deficits in cognitive performance; however, the effects of duration and amount of use on cognitive decline remain elusive. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlates of cognitive functioning in amphetamine users in Saudi Arabia. This was a case-control community-based study, using an Arabic adaptation of Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE). The study compared users of amphetamine (n = 50) and controls (n = 50) in terms of performance on the ACE. Amphetamine users underperformed controls in the cognitive domains of attention, memory, language, fluency, and visuospatial faculties, even after controlling for psychiatric and sociodemographic variables. Heavy and prolonged use of amphetamine was associated with worse cognitive performance. Use of amphetamine at lower doses was not associated with worsening of cognitive functioning. The study adds to the evidence that amphetamine use is associated with impairment in cognitive functioning in Saudi Arabia. This has implications in terms of designing therapeutic interventions that account for potential cognitive difficulties in amphetamine abusers.

OBJECTIVES: To explore medical students' attitudes towards communication skills learning in Western Saudi Arabia and to examine impact of socio-demographic variables on the attitudes towards learning these skills.   METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, sample of medical students were recruited from Taif University, Taif, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the second semester (January-May 2014). Participants were all year 2 (197 students) and year 5 (151 students). The study utilize the Communication Skills Attitude Scale (CSAS) to measure students' attitudes toward communication skills learning. The response rate was 93.9%.  RESULTS: The study showed that Taif medical students hold highly positive attitudes towards learning communication skills. Positive attitude score (PAS) was significantly higher in level 5 students, older age group.   CONCLUSION: Significant positive attitude toward learning communication skills clearly observed in target group. Students with more positive attitudes towards communication skills learning tended to be higher level and older age.

This paper presents a review to explore the literature focusing on portfolio in postgraduate general practice (GP) training, and to examine the impact of implementation of portfolio on learning process, as well as proposing recommendations for its implementation in postgraduate GP training. An electronic search was carried out on several databases for studies addressing portfolio in postgraduate GP training. Six articles were included to address specifically the effectiveness of portfolio in postgraduate GP training. Five of them described successful experiences of portfolio-based learning implementation. Only one article addressed portfolio-based assessment in postgraduate GP training. The existing evidence provides various benefits of professional portfolio-based learning. It does appear to have advantages of stimulating reflective learning, promoting proactive learning, and bridging the hospital experiences of the learners to GP. Moreover, the challenges to implementation of portfolio-based learning are often based on orientation and training of stakeholders.
