RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The body image of patients with cancer can be negatively affected due to treatment toxicities. Changes in body image may cause patients to experience social appearance anxiety. This study aimed to evaluate the body image and social appearance anxiety of patients with cancer undergoing radiotherapy. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 153 patients with cancer undergoing radiotherapy in a university hospital. The data were collected with a Patient Information Form, the Body Image Scale, and the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Skin Toxicity Criteria. RESULTS: Patients' mean body image score was 15.18 ± 8.26 (min = 0, max = 30), mean social appearance anxiety score was 45.29 ± 14.50 (min = 16, max = 80). Patients with low education levels and low-income levels had higher body image and social appearance anxiety scores (p < 0.01). Body image and social appearance anxiety scores were found to be higher in patients with advanced cancer, grade III-IV skin toxicity, pain, fatigue, and constipation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Radiotherapy may negatively affect body image and social appearance anxiety. Assessments of body image and social appearance anxiety regularly before, during, and after treatment are essential. Psychosocial support should be provided to patients to reduce body image and social appearance anxiety and increase their well-being. Patients with cancer especially those who have low income and education levels, advanced cancer stage and skin toxicity, and suffer from pain, fatigue, constipation, etc. should be supported by methods such as counseling and social support groups.

RESUMO

AIM: The effects in cultural and health provisions can lead to different unmet support needs. Hope is seen as an important support, a supportive power, and an efficient coping strategy for cancer caregivers. The purpose of this study in Turkish society is to determine supportive care needs of caregivers of cancer patients, to determine the hope levels of those caring for cancer patients and foresee how variables and hope can trigger needs. METHODS: To identify the unmet needs and hope levels of caregivers of advanced cancer patients in Turkish society. Data were collected using the Supportive Care Needs of Caregivers Scale and Herth Hope Index. RESULTS: More than half of the advanced cancer caregivers (56.51%) reported unmet care needs. Their unmet needs and hope levels were above average. Regression analysis showed the total score for hope was related to health care and information needs, work-social needs. CONCLUSION: Hope was related to health care and information needs and work-social needs. Oncology nurses should focus on the unmet needs of caregivers, taking into account their cultural differences in order to raise their hopes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a chronic disease that leads to major life changes for individuals because it affects physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. It is important that nursing care is able to respond to different individual needs regarding the challenges experienced by cancer patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the concept of individualized care as perceived by oncology patients and nurses working in oncology clinics. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at a medical oncology clinic in Turkey. Participants were oncology nurses (n = 23) and cancer patients (n = 180) discharged after treatment. The data were collected using the Patient-Nurse Identification Form, Individualized Care Scale (ICS-A, ICS-B), and Individualized Care Scale-Nurse. RESULTS: Nurses' perceptions of individualized care were more positive than those of patients. Patients' age, marital status, education level, income level, and disease characteristics did not have an effect on their awareness of interventions supporting their individuality or on their perceptions of individualized care. More years of employment in the nursing profession and in oncology had a positive effect on individualization of patient care. CONCLUSION: Perceptual differences between patients and nurses exist; individualized care plans may be needed to minimize the differences. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: These study outcomes can guide individualized care for cancer patients.
