RESUMO

The Fundão dam failure, the worst environmental disaster in Brazilian history, launched 50 million m3 of iron ore tailings mud through the Doce River, reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Generally, mine tailings increase the sediment inflow, leading to mud burial of epibenthic macrofauna, and the raise of metal(oid)s concentration causing macrofauna long-term changes. After almost four years, tailings mud was still spreading on the Doce River Shelf, while impacts on marine macrofauna were still unknown. Herein, the IMS index (a tracer of Fundão dam tailings mud), sediment variables, organic pollutants, and metal(oid)s were integrated to uncover the drives of macrofauna structure from Costas da Algas to Abrolhos bank MPAs. Tailings mud was present only in Doce River Mouth and Degredo, organic pollutants and metal(oid)s above safety levels were concentrated in those same areas. Tailings mud (IMS index) drastically reduced species richness and diversity, favoring the abundance of opportunistic species. Mud, IMS index and Al, Ba, and V, metal(oid)s linked to dam failure, structured macrofauna composition in this impacted area, dominated by resistant groups as Nuculidae, Spionidae, and Magelonidae. Conversely, an opposite pattern was found for further and deeper sites with high CaCO3 content and total nitrogen that also showed large grain size, in areas known to harbour biogenic structures, sustaining a macrofauna composition distinct from the impacted areas, dominated by Syllidae and Crassatellidae, sensitives to impacts. Macrofauna composition was most structured by sediment variables, followed by the intersection between metal(oid)s-IMS and Mud, both gradients acting almost entirely on a broad spatial scale. Benthic macrofauna at the Doce River Shelf is still impacted by Fundão dam tailings mud, even after almost four years of the disaster, and may continue to, since the influx of tailings does not stop, and sediment resuspension is a recurrent source for those impacts.

RESUMO

Purpose: Evidence indicates that muscle injury caused by exercise can lead to functional, biochemical, and clinical damage. These outcomes encompass an intrinsic potential to understand the real magnitude of interpretation of classic signs in sport environments and to monitor athletes, contributing to specific actions. However, little or no research has explored the general behavior of the variables presented in response to paradesportivo Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological behavior through clinical, functional, and metabolic outcomes in the moments following a simulated fight. Methods: Six disabled athletes, male Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners (34-44 years old), were included. The participants had their outcomes analyzed individually and the variables studied were correlated. It is noteworthy that participants I and II are professional athletes with world titles. The ethics committee involving human beings of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (register no. 2.997.241) accepted the study. The participants attended the collection site four times, with a 24-h interval between sessions, characterizing the following moments: pre-exertion, and post-exertion, 24, 48, and 72 h after the simulated fight. Data collected were muscle pain, perception of recovery, muscle strength, and blood samples for creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) analysis. The variables described were measured at all collection moments. The data were presented in individual raw values of each participant, with Spearman correlation analysis to verify the relationship between variables and moments. Results: The outcomes demonstrated that the CK and LDH activity was higher of high-performance parathletes (I and II) and the reported muscle pain was lower. The fight did not influence maximal isometric strength levels in either participant. In addition, regarding delayed effects, the participants reported peak pain, CK, LDH, and decreased perception of recovery within 24 h. However, it was found that, at 72 h, all values had recovered, close to baseline levels. Conclusion: The presented outcomes provide parameters and suggest a safe scenario based on the intensity and volume commonly adopted in this sports parade modality where the level of effort recommended during combat does not seem to cause deleterious damage.

RESUMO

The polychaete fauna from the mangroves of the Amazon Coast in Maranhão state, Brazil, is reported in this study. Fourteen species are listed, namely Alitta succinea (Leuckart, 1847); Arabella (Arabella) iricolor Montagu, 1804; Capitella capitata (Fabricius, 1780) complex; Exogone (Exogone) breviantennata Hartmann-Schröder, 1959; Heteromastus filiformis (Claparède, 1864); Isolda pulchella Müller, 1858; Mediomastus californiensis Hartman, 1944; Namalycastis fauveli Nageswara Rao, 1981; Namalycastis geayi (Gravier, 1901); Namalycastis senegalensis (Saint-Joseph, 1901); Nephtys simoni Perkins, 1980; Paraonis amazonicasp. n.; Sigambra bassi (Hartman, 1945); and Sigambra grubii Müller, 1858. Among them, Namalycastis fauveli and Namalycastis geayi are recorded for the first time in Brazil. Paraonis amazonicasp. n. is a new species for science, characterized by a rounded prostomium, 4-8 pairs of foliaceous branchiae, absent eyes, and two types of modified neurochaetae, acicular and hook-shaped.

RESUMO

The Namanereidinae are one of the most successful polychaete groups to colonize subterranean waters. Many species have evolved adaptations to underground life including elongation of appendages and reduction of eyes and pigmentation. However, the use of these troglomorphic characters in the group's systematics is contentious. The present study conducts a series of tree searching and phylogeny reconstructions to evaluate the influence of these characters in the phylogeny of the group. Results show that troglomorphic characters cause no serious errors in the phylogenetic reconstruction of Namanereidinae, and support the two existing genera, which can be unequivocally distinguished by non-troglomorphic traits. As a consequence of this phylogenetic hypothesis the following taxonomic changes are required: Lycastoides becomes a junior synonym of Namanereis, and its only species becomes a new combination, N. alticola n. comb. and Namalycastis occulta is moved to Namanereis becoming Namanereis occulta n. comb.

RESUMO

To describe a case of possible diagnosis of Pindborg tumor on the distal femur. A 32-years-old female patient, a native of Bolivia, resident in Brazil, arrived to this service for tumor research in the right femur. After biopsies and resection of the lesion, the case was referred to analysis and consultancy in the United States. In a report of review by the Pathology Laboratory, it was characterized the histological appearance and immunohistochemical profile were characteristic of Pindborg tumor. Currently, the patient is being followed-up at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of this institution, and presents a good evolution. This study presents the case of a patient with a rare tumor that was investigated for an extensive period and through many tests. Pindborg tumor was suggested as a diagnostic hypothesis due to the characteristics and behavior of the neoplastic lesion. Although this lesion is more commonly observed in odontology, the neoplasia was compatible with the diagnosis. Therefore, despite the fact that this tumor has benign characteristics, long-term monitoring is necessary, given the high rate of tumor recurrence.

The subfamily Namanereidinae represents one of the few groups of Polychaeta strongly adapted to low salinity and freshwater. Recently, some new species of the subfamily have been described, but no new phylogenetic analyses for the group have been undertaken since 1999. Here, we describe a new species of Namanereidinae, Namalycastis caetensis sp. nov., and provide a morphology-based phylogenetic analysis of the genus Namalycastis with the aim of assessing the evolutionary relationships for this new species. The designation of this new species is supported by the presence of elongated falcigers (also known as pseudospinigers, an unusual character in the genus), lack of an anterior cleft in the prostomium, slightly indistinct cirrophores, four pairs of tentacular cirri, and subconical acicular ligulae. Our results suggest that Namalycastis caetensis is closely related to N. geayi and N. fauveli. The existence of poorly-characterized species, from a morphological and molecular point of view, still limits our understanding of Namanereidinae relationships.
