RESUMO

The appearance of the mule in the remote villages of the Toubkal National Park in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco can be traced back to the early years of the twentieth century. The mule population's subsequent growth in numbers accompanied the shift away from a subsistence economy that was made possible by the appearance and growth of the mining and mountain tourism industries. This paper reviews this early history, drawing on the accounts provided by early explorers and anthropologists, before developing a mixed methods approach to evaluating the welfare of pack mules in two villages within the National Park. The first village is part of the main access route to the Toubkal, the principle summit of the National Park and therefore much visited. The second is a much more remote, under visited and less developed village. Ethnographic work, studying muleteering practice and undertaken over several years is reported here and supplemented by findings from a detailed survey of the mules of both villages. This allows the work undertaken and the lived realities of the working mule across several generations of inhabitants to be presented together with data about the primary welfare concerns identified on clinical examination. In village one, 72 mule owners and their mules were surveyed and examined. Many of these mules worked in tourism, providing a source of revenue for their families. This work was often undertaken by teenagers/young adults working their father's mules. Tethering was widely practised and evidence of tethering injuries were identified in most mules. In the more remote village, 18 owners and their equids were surveyed and examined. In this population, mules were more likely to be worked locally in agriculture, building and to collect firewood. Bitting injuries associated with the use of the traditional bit were a significant concern in both villages. The universal use of a closed shoe was also in evidence in both villages; this was associated with atrophy of the frog and hoof imbalances. The reasoning for the use of the traditional bit and closed shoe are presented and alternatives discussed.

This study reports the first equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) and equine herpesvirus-4 (EHV-4) seroprevalence investigation in horse populations of Morocco in 24 years. It also aims to determine antibody titers in horses vaccinated under field conditions with a monovalent EHV-1 vaccine. Blood samples were collected from 405 horses, including 163 unvaccinated and 242 vaccinated animals. They were tested using a commercial type-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a virus neutralization test (VNT). Overall, 12.8% unvaccinated, and 21.8% vaccinated horses were positive for EHV-1. All samples were positive for EHV-4 when tested with the type-specific ELISA. In the vaccinated group, the VNT revealed a mean antibody titer of 1:49 for EHV-1 and 1:45 for EHV-4. The present study demonstrates that EHV-1 and EHV-4 are endemic in the horse populations in the north of Morocco, with prevalence differences between regions. Furthermore, horses vaccinated with a monovalent EHV-1 vaccine had low antibodies titers. This study highlights the necessity to establish and/or support efficient biosecurity strategies based on sound management of horses and characterize further and potentially improve the efficiency of the EHV vaccines and vaccination protocol used in the field.

Tbourida is a traditional Moroccan equestrian sport in which 15 horses gallop 200 m in a line while riders fire into the sky with muskets. The stop is the finale and representative demands of this equestrian event. Such particular sudden stop after a fast gallop requires a hyperextension of the metacarpophalangeal joint. Indeed, it is well known that Tbourida show predisposes horses to different injuries of the hard and soft tissues of the distal forelimbs. Yet, there is a paucity of research that examined such lesions. The aim of the present study was to investigate for the first time the type and the prevalence of osteoarticular findings in the distal forelimbs of Tbourida horses using radiographic images. The study was conducted on 127 Tbourida horses aged between 2.5 and 15 years old with 6-year-old horses being the most affected. Data analysis showed that 93,7% of horses exhibit degenerative joint lesions of the fetlock, 86,6% showed ossification of the ungual cartilage, 78,7% had enthesophytes associated with the deep digital flexor tendons, 81,1% had enthesophytes associated with the suspensory ligament branches, and 19,6% showed a particular exostosis on the first phalanx. This large number of lesions reflects how this sport is difficult for horses and also argues that animals are suffering from a lack of welfare and care in their husbandry management.

This study aimed at describing anatomo-histopathological and imaging features, using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging on six ex vivo forelimbs of Tbourida horses, that presented a particular bone exostosis on the dorsal and proximal part of the first phalanx, diagnosed by X-ray. Gross anatomy of the bone exostosis revealed an irregular surface with poly-lobulated tissue masses showing a cauliflower shape. The diameter/depth varied from 0.5 to 5.1 cm with a mean of 3.9 ± 0.9 cm. The capsule of the metacarpophalangeal joint was hypertrophic and showed many invaginations in the inner part, in contact with the bone exostosis. Computed tomography revealed cortical and medullary continuity of the bone exostosis, with the underlying bone, and remodeling of the cortical surface of the dorsal and proximal part of the first phalanx. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an increased signal intensity of the bone exostosis on the T1- and T2*-weighted gradient fast echo. Histological examination of the bone exostosis revealed a cap of hyaline cartilage, including large foci of endochondral ossification with a base of cancellous bone surrounding marrow spaces, which confirmed the diagnosis of osteochondroma. The capsule of the metacarpophalangeal joint showed a large amount of recently formed connective tissue fibers in its inner part, interspersed with mature connective tissue. The hyperextension of the metacarpophalangeal joint during a Tbourida show, which occurs on a hard ground surface, and the use of hobbles in horse stabling are most likely responsible for the outgrowth of an osteochondroma of different shapes and sizes, and fracture complications in some cases.

The aim of the present study was to compare the safety and efficacy of sevoflurane and isoflurane during low flow anaesthesia (fresh gas flow (FGF) 14 ml/kg/min) as well as to compare the consumption of both anaesthetics. Data were gathered from 60 dogs assigned for surgery under general anaesthesia with an expected duration of 75 minutes or longer. All dogs were induced with 0.6 mg/kg (maximum 25 mg) l-methadone and 1 mg/kg (maximum 25 mg) diazepam i.v.. Anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane (group 1) or sevoflurane (group 2) in a mixture with 50% O2 and 50% N2O as carrier gases, under controlled ventilation. Monitoring included electrocardiogram, body temperature, the temperature of in- and exspired gases, arterial oxygen saturation, arterial blood pressure as well as a continuous monitoring of inhaled and exhaled gas concentrations (O2, N2O, CO2, isoflurane, sevoflurane). The consumption of isoflurane and sevoflurane as well as the dogs' recovery times were evaluated for both groups. In all groups the inspired oxygen concentrations ranged above the minimum value of 30 Vol% during low flow anaesthesia, with an arterial oxygen saturation above 97%. End tidal concentration of CO2, heart rate and arterial blood pressure were within the physiological ranges and showed no differences between the two groups. Recovery time was significantly shorter after sevoflurane compared to isoflurane anaesthesia, whilst the consumption of sevoflurane was higher than that of isoflurane. Sevoflurane appears to be as clinically safe as isoflurane in low flow anaesthesia. Even considering that sevoflurane is more expensive than isoflurane, the use of the low flow technique decreases the cost of anaesthesia due to the reduced volatile anaesthetic consumption.

The aim of the present study was to compare the safety of two low flow (LF) regimes [fresh gas flow (FGF) 20 ml/kg/min (group 2) and 14 ml/kg/min (group 3)] with the high flow (HF) technique (FGF 50 ml/kg/min; group 1) of isoflurane anaesthesia. Data were gathered from ninety dogs assigned for surgery under general anaesthesia with an expected duration of 75 minutes or longer. All dogs had an anaesthetic induction with 0,6 mg/kg I-methadone (maximum 25 mg) and 1 mg/kg diazepam (maximum 25 mg) i.v. Anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in a mixture of 50% O2 and 50% N2O as carrier gases, with controlled ventilation. The Monitoring included electrocardiogramm, body temperature, the temperature of in- and exspired gases, arterial oxygen saturation, arterial blood pressure as well as a continuous monitoring of inhaled and exhaled gas concentrations (O2, N2O, CO2, isoflurane). The consumption of isoflurane and carrier gases as well as the recovery times were evaluated for the three groups. The inspired oxygen concentrations always ranged above the minimum value of 30 Vol.-% during low flow anaesthesia. The arterial oxygen saturation ranged between 92-98%, the end tidal concentration of CO2 between 35 and 45 mmHg. Heart rate and arterial blood pressure were within normal limits. Recovery time was significantly shorter after LF than after HF anaesthesia. The highest decrease in body temperature occurred in the HF group 1 because of a significantly lower anaesthetic gas temperature. Despite this, LF anaesthesia resulted in a reduced consumption of carrier gases and volatiles. In conclusion, low flow anaesthesia with isoflurane is a safe technique and offers substantial economic advantages over high flow techniques and is moreover better tolerated by the patients.
