RESUMO

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of lavender oil inhalation on work stress and job satisfaction among health professionals. This randomized, experimental study involved 108 health professionals, of whom 36 were randomized into the intervention group, 35 into the placebo group, and 37 into the control group. The intervention was performed during work shifts of the intervention group (8 hours a day during a 5-day period). The intervention group was exposed to lavender oil inhalation through a diffuser and the placebo group was exposed to inhalation of distilled water containing light yellow food dye, but the control group did not receive anything. Data were collected with General Characteristics Form, The Swedish Demand-Control-Support Questionnaire, and The Minnesota Satisfaction Scale. The study was also registered at the Australia-New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12621000239864). Before the intervention, no significant difference was found in work stress and job satisfaction levels between the intervention, placebo, and control groups. After the intervention, the intervention group had a significantly lower work stress level and a significantly higher job satisfaction level than the placebo and control groups (P < .05). Lavender oil inhalation can decrease work stress and improve job satisfaction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of listening to the sound of a ney, or reed flute, on women in labour.. METHODS: The randomised single-blind, case-control experimental study was conducted at a State Hospital, Bursa, Turkey, from July 15 to October 15, 2018, and comprised pregnant women who were divided into two equal experimental and control groups A and B respectively. Women in group A were exposed to instrumental ney music played in the modal rhythm of Segah. No intervention was done in group B. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 30 women, there were 15(50%) in each of the two groups. Post-intervention, mean dilation and effacement values in group A were significantly greater than group B (p<0.05). Mean duration of labour in group A was significantly lower than group B (p<0.05). Mean pain and anxiety levels of group A were significantly lower than group B (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The sound of the ney was found to have a positive impact on vaginal examination data, the duration of labour, and the pain and anxiety experienced during the process of delivery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of eating dried figs on the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea, perceived stress levels, and quality of life during all menstrual cycles. METHODS: This randomized, placebo-controlled study was performed with 99 midwifery students. Each student was randomly assigned to the placebo (n = 32), cinnamon (n = 34), or dried fig (n = 33) groups. Data were gathered through the Total Dysmenorrhea Score, a descriptive information form, the Visual Analogue Scale, a pain duration assessment form, the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the short version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-TR. RESULTS: During the 3 menstrual cycles in which the intervention was implemented, the dried-fig group had significantly lower scores for pain severity and duration, menstrual distress, and perceived stress than did those of the cinnamon and placebo groups. In addition, during these 3 cycles, the dried-fig group had significantly higher quality-of-life scores than the cinnamon and placebo groups. CONCLUSION: The results showed that eating dried figs during menstruation decreased pain severity and duration, menstrual symptoms, and perceived stress and increased quality of life.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare low-fidelity simulation/model and hybrid simulation techniques for teaching how to perform intramuscular injections. METHODS: The case control study was conducted at the Department of Midwifery, Adnan Menderes University, Aydin, Turkey, from May 2 to 25, 2018, and comprised students enrolled in the course of Basic Principles and Practices in Midwifery II. The students were randomly divided into intervention group A and control group B. Those in group A were taught intramuscular injection at an assembly which was prepared through hybrid simulation method, while those in group B made use of the model routinely employed in the midwifery programme. Data was collected using a descriptive characteristics form, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Guide to Performing Intramuscular Injections into the Ventro-gluteal Site. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 73 students, 37(50.7%) were in group A and 36(49.3%) in group B. There was no difference in terms of age between the groups (p>0.05). Group A had a better total General Self-Efficacy Scale scores compared to group B (p<0.05). Mean score of group A in State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was lower than that of group B (p<0.05). The mean score of group A was also higher in the Guide to Performing Intramuscular Injections into the Ventrogluteal Site compared to group B (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Students using a hybrid simulation method had better levels of self-efficacy and skill as well as lower levels of anxiety compared to those trained on the conventional method.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the impact of prenatal education on gestational hypertension, adaptation to pregnancy and on maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: The quasi-experimental case-control study was conducted at Aydin Maternity and Children's Hospital, Aydin, Turkey, from October 2013 to July 2015, and comprised women with gestational hypertension. The sample was randomised into education and control groups with the former receiving informative education and the latter receiving due medical care alone. Roy Adaptation Model was used to determine the impact of prenatal education. SPSS 20 was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Of the 132 subjects, 68(51.5%) were in the education group and 64(48.5%) in the control group. Postintervention, 11(16.2%) women in the education group and 37(57.8%)in the control group developed severe preeclampsia. Subsequently, 44(64.7%) in the education group had no preeclampsia. The corresponding number in the control group was 15(23.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Education based on Roy Adaptation Model proved to be effective among pregnant women in keeping hypertension under control.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate effects of unplanned pregnancy on neonatal health. This is a retrospective case-control study and included 314 babies selected with a non-probability method. Data were collected with a questionnaire of descriptive characteristics and neonatal health and Parent Infant Interaction Assessment Scale. A significantly higher rate of the babies born to the women with unplanned pregnancy had meconium in their amniotic fluid (14.6% vs. 7.0%; P = 0.029), needed special care (20.4% vs. 11.5%; P = 0.031) and were kept in the incubators (12.7% vs. 4.5%; P = 0.009). Both the babies born to the women with unplanned pregnancy and the babies born to the women with planned pregnancy were first fed with breast milk (96.8% of the unplanned group; 98.1% of the planned group), but a higher rate of the babies born to the women with unplanned pregnancy had problems with breast-feeding. (19.1% vs. 5.1%; P = 0.000). The babies born to the women with unplanned pregnancy got significantly lower scores on Parent Infant Interaction Assessment Scale (4.86 ± 1.98 in the unplanned group; 8.52 ± 1.43 in the planned group; P = 0.000). We found that a higher rate of the babies born to the women with unplanned pregnancy needed special care, had problems with breast-feeding and negative parent-infant interaction. We recommend that women with unplanned pregnancy should be given priority on prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care and that measures which protect and promote neonatal health should be taken.
