RESUMO

The objective of this study is to scrutinize the impact of low carbon energy consumption, environmental-related technological innovation, urbanization, economic growth, and trade on China's ecological footprint from 1980 to 2021. To investigate the nature of the long-term connections between the variables, we employ the symmetric and asymmetric autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique to explore the long- and short-run elasticities of coefficients. The results of ARDL and NARDL verified the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in the long run in the presence of low carbon energy consumption. Moreover, the findings show that the positive part of low carbon energy consumption is negatively connected with the ecological footprint. Alternatively, the positive part of low carbon energy consumption is positively linked with the ecological footprint. The outcome highlights that environment-related technological innovation reduces the level of ecological footprint. Similarly, urbanization has a detrimental effect on the ecological footprint. Based on the estimated findings, it is suggested that China's economy should place a greater emphasis on increasing its level of investment in the low carbon energy sector and adopting severe environmental legislation to protect the economy from environmental burden.

Coccidiosis is an acute gastrointestinal parasitic disease and causes approximately $2.80 to $3.27 per m2 loss in a broiler farm of a 33-day-old flock. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were green synthesized using the aqueous leaf extract of Ficus racemosa as a reducing and capping agent to reduce the emerging resistance in coccidia spores against conventional treatments and boost the immune level in broilers. These IONPs were evaluated for their impacts on the growth performance, biochemistry, blood profile, and histology in the coccidiodized broiler chicken with Emeria tenella under in vivo conditions. The characteristics and stability of particles were obtained using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray absorption (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), zeta potential and zeta size. The results indicated that IONPs at the moderate dose of 15 mg/kg (p = 0.001) reduced the coccidial impacts by eliminating oocyst shedding per gram feces (up to 91%) and reducing clinical symptoms (lesions (LS = 0), bloody diarrhea (No), and mortality (0%) in chicken at day 10 of treatment as compared to the negative control group-B (infected & non-treated). A dose-dependent and time-dependent trend were observed during treatments (10, 15, and 20 mg/kg) of 1-3 weeks using IONPs against the coccidial impacts on the growth parameters (body weight gain, mean feed consumption, feed conversion ratio) and biochemistry (plasma glucose, total protein, uric acid, ALT, AST, and ALP) in chickens. Additionally, F. racemosa IONPs at a dose of 15 and 20 mg/kg significantly recovered the parasitized and highly damaged hepatocytes, liver tissues, and ceca tissues after 1-3 weeks of treatment in broiler chickens. Overall, the 15 mg/kg concentration of IONPs exhibited fast recovery and growth enhancement in coccidiodized broilers. Therefore, the 15 mg/kg dose of green synthesized IONPs using leaf extract of F. racemosa could be a potential and safe anticoccidial agent with targeted implications in the poultry industry.

As the burden of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events continues to increase, emerging evidence supports the concept of plaque vulnerability as a strong marker of plaque rupture, and embolization. Qualitative assessment of the plaque can identify the degree of plaque instability. Ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) have emerged as safe and accurate techniques for the assessment of plaque vulnerability. Plaque features including but not limited to surface ulceration, large lipid core, thin fibrous cap (FC), intraplaque neovascularization and hemorrhage can be assessed and are linked to plaque instability.

Climate affects living ecosystems and defines species physiology. Climate change causes certain stress on animals, recorded as Enamel Hypoplasia (EH). Proboscideans, the mega herbivores, were extensively represented in the Siwaliks of Pakistan between the Middle Miocene to Pleistocene (~15.99-~0.6 Ma). This study was carried out on 15 species from 9 genera and 4 families using 319 teeth from 266 individual quarries. Our results revealed that 20.06% (64/319) of teeth were infected by EH. Family Deinotheriidae faced higher stress during the terminal of the Middle Miocene (EH 25%). Dental characters of deinotheres indicated that this family preferred soft vegetation like C3 plants and failed to survive in grassland ecology at the onset of the Late Miocene (~10-9 Ma). Gomphotheriidae (EH 21.05%) and Stegodontidae (EH 23.40%) survived through warm and dry climatic conditions of the Late Miocene, but could not survive the cool and dry climate of Plio-Pleistocene where grasslands were abundant with less browsing activity. Family Elephantidae (EH 8.47%) was successful in drier conditions and utilized the exclusive C4 diet in open grasslands as efficient grazers, indicated by their tooth morphology. Elephantids were dominant of the proboscideans in open grassland and drier climate during Plio-Pleistocene in the Indian subcontinent. We assume that change in the Siwalik palaeoenvironment was governed by a microclimate.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a known risk factor for ischemic heart disease and serves as an independent predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This meta-analysis pools data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to better define hemoglobin (Hb) thresholds for transfusion in this setting. RESULTS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched using the terms "Acute Coronary Syndrome" AND "Blood Transfusion" including their synonyms. A total of three randomized controlled trials were included. Restrictive transfusion strategy (RTS) was defined as transfusing for Hb ≤ 8 g/dl with a post-transfusion goal of 8 to 10 g/dl. Liberal transfusion strategy (LTS) was defined as Hb ≤ 10 g/dl and post-transfusion goal of at least 11 g/dl. The primary end point was 30-day mortality. Secondary outcomes included recurrent ACS events, new or worsening CHF within 30 days, and major adverse cardiac events (MACE). The primary analytic method used was random effects model. Out of 821 patients, 400 were randomized to LTS, and 421 to RTS. Mean age was 70.3 years in RTS versus 76.4 in LTS. There was no statistically significant difference for 30-day mortality in LTS compared to RTS [odds ratio (OR) 1.69; 95% CI 0.35 to 8.05]. Similarly, there was no difference in MACE (OR 0.74; 95% CI 0.21 to 2.63), CHF (OR 0.82; 95% CI 0.18 to 3.76), or the incidence of recurrent ACS (OR 1.21; 95% CI 0.49 to 2.95). CONCLUSIONS: In the setting of ACS, there is no difference between LTS and RTS for the outcomes of mortality, MACE, recurrent ACS, or CHF at 30 days. Further evidence in the form of high-quality RCTs are needed to compare RTS and LTS.

Depleting water resources and increasing global temperature due to climate change are major challenges to agriculture and food security worldwide. Deciphering the underlying mechanisms of traits contributing to grain development and yield is essential for the development of climate-resilient cultivars. Therefore, this study assessed 105 bread wheat genotypes grown under control, drought, and heat-stress conditions for two crop seasons and performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a 90k SNP array. The genotypes showed significant trait differences under all environmental conditions. Highly significant variation was observed, with moderate (50.09%) to high (76.19%) heritability in the studied germplasms. The studied traits were all also significantly positively correlated. A total of 541 significant associations (p ≤ 10-3) between marker and trait (MTAs) were observed after crossing the FDR <0.05 threshold for all traits. Among these, 195, 179, and 167 significant MTAs were detected under control, drought, and heat-stress conditions, respectively. Under the control and drought conditions, pleiotropic loci BS00010616_51 and BS00010868_51 were observed on chromosomes 7B and 1B situated at 186.24 cM and 35.47 cM, respectively. Pleiotropic loci BS00010868_51, Kukri_c11154_1723, and Ex_c10068_1509 were identified on chromosomes 1B, 5B, and 2A, respectively, under control and heat stress conditions. A stable and consistent locus (Excalibur_c20796_395) on chromosome 7A, located at 372.34 cM, was also linked to grain morphology and yield-related attributes in control, drought, and heat-stress conditions. The results of the current study confirmed several previously reported MTAs for the traits under consideration and identified new MTAs under harsh climatic conditions. These SNPs will aid in the discovery of novel genes in wheat. SNPs showing significant associations may be used in marker-assisted selection and allow the development of drought- and heat-tolerant genotypes with high yields to address global food security concerns.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is a common cause of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and non-ulcer dyspepsia, and is also associated with gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Despite being known about for more than 30 years, finding an effective therapeutic strategy against it remains a challenge. AIM: There are no US studies evaluating the efficacy of a Levofloxacin based therapy for H. pylori infection. We here intend to study the efficacy of Levofloxacin based triple antibiotic regimen as compared to Clarithromycin based triple therapy and Bismuth based quadruple therapy in our patient population. METHODS: This is a retrospective single center observational study. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection who underwent treatment for H. pylori with one of the three therapies, i.e. Clarithromycin triple, Bismuth Quadruple or Levofloxacin triple, were included in the study and the eradication rates were compared. The confirmation of the H. pylori was done 4 weeks after the completion of anti-microbial therapy. RESULTS: A total of 177 individuals underwent the H. pylori treatment in our retrospective review. Of these, 54% (n=97) of patients were treated with Clarithromycin based triple therapy (Group 1), 35% (n=63) were treated with Levofloxacin based regimen (Group 2), and the remaining 11% (n=17) were treated with Bismuth based quadruple therapy (Group 3). The eradication rates were significantly higher in patients treated with Clarithromycin based triple therapy as compared to Levofloxacin based triple therapy and Bismuth quadruple therapy (78.3% vs 49.2% vs 41.1% P=0.001). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our study shows significantly lower eradication rates with Levofloxacin triple therapy among a selected US population. Thus, it may not be a good first-line therapy among this US population and the Clarithromycin based regimen may still be used successfully.

AIM: To evaluate the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Risk Assessment Tool as a predictor for the presence of adenomatous polyps (AP) found during screening or surveillance colonoscopy. METHODS: This is a retrospective single center observational study. We collected data of adenomatous polyps in each colonoscopy and then evaluated the lifetime CRC risk. We calculated the AP prevalence across risk score quintiles, odds ratios of the prevalence of AP across risk score quintiles, area under curves (AUCs) and Youden's indexes to assess the optimal risk score cut off value for AP prevalence status. RESULTS: The prevalence of AP gradually increased throughout the five risk score quintiles: i.e., 27.63% in the first and 51.35% in the fifth quintile. The odd ratios of AP prevalence in the fifth quintile compared to the first and second quintile were 2.76 [confidence interval (CI): 1.71-4.47] and 2.09 (CI: 1.32-3.30). The AUC for all patients was 0.62 (CI: 0.58-0.66). Youden's Index indicated the optimal risk score cutoff value discriminating AP prevalence status was 3.60. CONCLUSION: Patients with the higher NCI risk score have higher risk of AP and subsequent CRC; therefore, measures to increase the effectiveness of CRC detection in these patients include longer withdrawal time, early surveillance colonoscopy, and choosing flexible colonoscopy over other CRC screening modalities.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is an inherited disorder of cardiac ion channels characterized by peculiar ECG findings predisposing individuals to ventricular arrhythmias, syncope, and sudden cardiac death (SCD). Various electrolyte disturbances and ion channels blocking drugs could also provoke BrS ECG findings without genetic BrS. Clinical differentiation and recognition are essential for guiding the legitimate action. Hyperkalemia is well known to cause a wide variety of ECG manifestations. Severe hyperkalemia can even cause life threatening ventricular arrhythmias and cardiac conduction abnormalities. Most common ECG findings include peaked tall T waves with short PR interval and wide QRS complex. Since it is very commonly encountered disorder, physicians need to be aware of even its rare ECG manifestations, which include ST segment elevation and Brugada pattern ECG (BrP). We are adding a case to the limited literature about hyperkalemia induced reversible Brugada pattern ECG changes.

Head and Neck (HN) cancer is the most frequently identified cancer across the globe and is considered as 8-10 % of all cancers in Southeast Asia. The social and cultural habits are the main cause of the remarkable increase in HN cancer in Pakistan. HN cancers are more prevalent in men as compared to women. The HN cancer in Pakistan is mainly attributed to discrete demographic profile, risk elements, eating patterns and family history. The foremost factors of risk are linked with cigarette smoking, alcoholic drinks and tobacco chewing like paan, gutka, etc. The actual burden of HN cancer in Pakistan is 18.74% of all new cancer cases recorded during 2004 -2014. The data is collected from HN cancer patients who are diagnosed from September 2011 till May 2012 in the Institute of Nuclear medicine and Oncology, Lahore Pakistan. In order to diagnose risk factors of HN cancer, the Logistic Regression (LR) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) are used as analytical tools. The findings of using these both tools concluded that gender, age, occupation, socioeconomic status, family history, chewing habits, smoking habit, worked in the chemical or dust place, alcohol use are main causes for HN cancer. The main aim of this study is to develop the awareness about HN cancer, its causes and early diagnosis.
