RESUMO
Condylar hyperplasia is (CH) an uncommon malformation of the mandible involving change in size and morphology of the condylar neck and head. CH is an anomaly that usually occurs unilaterally and equally affects in both men and women. Hyperplasia of the condyle 'differentiated into hemimandibular hyperplasia, hemimandibular elongation and CH. Here, we are presenting a case of 17-year-old male patient with unilateral CH and its review of the literature.

Effect of various pesticides (insecticides, fungicides and herbicides) has been studied on growth and efficiency of symbiotic properties of 3 fast growing Rhizobium sp. under green house conditions. The results revealed adverse effects on plant growth and nitrogen fixing capacity as measured by dry weight and total nitrogen content of plants infected with pesticide treated Rhizobium. Of the pesticides tested, herbicides were found to be more effective on the above parameters than the insecticides and fungicides.

Four hundred and eight consecutive patients with upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage, admitted to a large hospital in India over the 5-year period 1976-81, were studied prospectively. The mean age was 41 years, the male: female ratio was 3: 1, causes of bleeding were oesophageal varices in 45.5 per cent, duodenal ulcer in 25 per cent, gastric ulcer in 5 per cent and gastritis in 8.5 per cent. One hundred and twelve patients had operations with on overall mortality of 20 (18 per cent). Thirty-three (11 per cent) of the unoperated patients died. Eighty-seven per cent of patients left hospital alive and 76 per cent returned to their former way of life. Patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding in North India are mainly young males, nearly half bleeding from oesophageal varices, and have a moderately good prognosis.

7 cases of isolated branchial anomalies distributed in four consecutive generations of a Central Indian family are described: 6 were males and 1 was female. 3 members had a left-sided branchial sinus, 1 had a right-sided sinus, 2 had bilateral sinuses, and 1 had a right-sided cyst. The family shows that branchial (lateral cervical) cysts and sinuses are inherited as autosomal dominant characters, and that the two anomalies are indistinguishable genetically.

The present article gives a brief and complete account of the incidence, pathology, clinical features, diagnosis, management and prognosis of the schwannoma with special reference to facial nerve schwannomas. A case report of a rare schwannoma of the vertical part of the facial nerve found on biopsy of tissue during a postaural modified radical mastoidectomy is included.

The hair patterns of the pinna have been studied in a selected sample of 767 males and 5 females from Central India, all with hairy pinnae. The age of the males ranged from 21 to 85 years, and that of the females from 2.5 months to 32 years. All subjects were healthy and did not demonstrate any endocrine disturbance. The commonest hair pattern of the elevated areas of the pinna among the males was the helico-lobulo-antitragal, whereas in the females it was the helical. The hair pattern of the depressed areas of the pinna showing highest frequency was the conchal. The majority of the hairy pinnae are associated with bilateral tragal hair and the maximo-pilose distribution of the facial hair. The Central Indian males resemble the White males in their hair distribution of the pinna.
