RESUMO

The knee is a common site for bone tumors, whether clinically painful or not. Conventional radiology has been established as the first line of investigation in patients with knee pain and can reveal lesions that often generate questions not only for the generalist physician but also for the radiologist or general orthopedist. History, image examination, and histopathological analysis compose the essential tripod of the diagnosis of bone tumors, and conventional radiology is an essential diagnostic tool in patients with knee pain. This pictorial essay proposes to depict the main conventional radiography findings of the most common bone tumors around the knee, including benign and malignant tumors, as well as pseudo-tumors.

Molecular identification through DNA barcoding has been proposed as a way to standardize a global biodiversity identification system using a partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene. We applied an integrative approach using DNA barcoding and traditional morphology-based bioassessment to identify fish from a neotropical region possessing low taxonomic knowledge: the Jequitinhonha River Basin (Southeastern Brazil). The Jequitinhonha River Basin (JRB) has a high rate of endemism and is considered an area of high priority for fish conservation, with estimates indicating the presence of around 110 native and non-indigenous species. DNA barcodes were obtained from 260 individuals belonging to 52 species distributed among 35 genera, 21 families and 6 orders, including threatened and rare species such as Rhamdia jequitinhonha and Steindachneridion amblyurum. The mean Kimura two-parameter genetic distances within species, genera and families were: 0.44, 12.16 and 20.58 %, respectively. Mean intraspecific genetic variation ranged from 0 to 11.43 %, and high values (>2 %) were recovered for five species. Species with a deep intraspecific distance, possibly flagging overlooked taxa, were detected within the genus Pimelodella. Fifteen species, only identified to the genus level, had unique BINs, with a nearest neighbor distance over 2 % and therefore, potential new candidate species supported by DNA barcoding. The integrative taxonomy approach using DNA barcoding and traditional taxonomy may be a remedy to taxonomy impediment, accelerating species identification by flagging potential new candidate species and to adequately conserve the megadiverse neotropical ichthyofauna.

Transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasonography performed by a skilled and experienced investigator is currently considered as a highly accurate method in the differential diagnosis of adnexal masses. The authors set out a review based on sonographic images demonstrating the main presentations of adnexal masses, describing their characteristics and locations.

The authors report a case of a 71-year-old male patient diagnosed with Paget's disease of sacrum. Imaging study was performed with radiography, scintigraphy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and the diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy. The patient progressed with a good response to monthly treatment with ibandronate 150 mg, presenting a significant reduction in biochemical markers of disease.

RESUMO

Plant architecture is considered to affect herbivory intensity, but it is one of the least studied factors in plant-insect interactions, especially for gall-inducing insects. This study aimed to investigate the influence of plant architecture on the speciose fauna of gall-inducing insects associated with 17 species of Baccharis. Five architectural variables were evaluated: plant height, number of fourth-level shoots, biomass, average level and number of ramifications. The number of galling species associated with each host plant species was also determined. To test the effects of plant architecture on gall richness at the individual level, we used another data set where the number of fourth-level shoots and gall richness were determined for B. concinna, B. dracunculifolia, and B. ramosissima every 3 weeks during 1 year. The average similarity between host species based on gall fauna was low (9%), but plants with the same architectural pattern tended to support similar gall communities. The most important architectural trait influencing gall richness at the species level was the number of fourth-level shoots, which is indicative of the availability of plant meristems, a fundamental tissue for gall induction and development. This variable also showed a positive correlation with gall richness at the individual level. We propose that variations in gall richness among host species are driven by interspecific differences in plant architecture via availability of young, undifferentiated tissue, which is genetically controlled by the strength of the apical dominance. Plant architecture should have evolutionary consequences for gall communities, promoting insect radiation among architecturally similar plants through host shift and sympatric speciation. We also discuss the role of plant architecture in the global biogeography of gall-inducing insects.
