RESUMO

Phytochemical study on the methanol extract of the stems and leaves of Kadsura induta led to the isolation of six dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans, including three new compounds named kadsindutalignans A-C (1-3), and three known ones, heteroclitalignan B (4), kadsuphilin C (5) and kadsulignan E (6). Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analyses, including HRESIMS, 1D- (1H NMR and 13C NMR), 2D-NMR (HSQC, HMBC, 1H-1H COSY and NOESY), and experimental circular dichroism (CD) spectra. All the isolates inhibited NO production in LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells with IC50 values in the range from 5.67 ± 0.54 µM to 38.19 ± 2.03 µM, compared to that of the positive control of NG-monomethyl-L-arginine acetate (L-NMMA) with an IC50 value of 8.90 ± 0.48 µM. Interestingly, the new compound 2 showed potential inhibition of NO production with an IC50 value of 5.67 ± 0.54 µM, which was higher than that of the positive control.

RESUMO

Background: This study evaluated the prognostic ability of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in patients with stage IV adenocarcinoma lung cancer to detect protein death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression levels. Methods: In total, 86 patients with stage IV adenocarcinoma lung cancer underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging and PD-L1 expression evaluation before treatment from February 2019 to November 2020 at Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam. The assessed patient characteristics in this study included sex, age, smoking status, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation, PD-L1 expression level, survival status, tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) stage, and metastasis locations. Results: The average age was 62.23 ± 9.51 years, and men and women represented 67.4% and 32.6% of the population, respectively. The EGFR mutation rate was 36%. PD-L1 expression was negative (detected in <1% of the tumor) in 40.7% of cases and positive in 59.3% of cases (detected in 1-49% of the tumor in 32.6%; detected in ≥50% of the tumor in 26.7%). The mean maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was 11.09 ± 3.94. SUVmax was significantly higher in PD-L1-positive tumors than in PD-L1-negative tumors (12.24 ± 4.01 and 9.43 ± 3.22, respectively; p = 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed an area under the curve of SUVmax was 0.681 (95% confidence interval 0.570-0.793, p = 0.004). Compared with PD-L1-negative cases, SUVmax was significantly different in all PD-L1-positive cases (p = 0.001), weakly PD-L1-positive cases (1-49%, p = 0.005), and strongly PD-L1-positive cases (≥50%, p = 0.003). PD-L1 expression levels were significantly associated with SUVmax (p = 0.001), tumor size (p = 0.022), and EGFR mutation status (p = 0.045). Conclusions: SUVmax in the primary lesions was able to predict PD-L1 expression and may play a role in predicting PD-L1 immunotherapy efficacy in patients with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma.

RESUMO

This research reports the processability and mechanical properties of silk resins prepared by hot-pressing followed by hot-rolling and then analyzes their thermal and structural properties. The results show that regenerated silk (RS) resins are better suited for hot-rolling than Eri and Bombyx mori silk resins (untreated silk). When hot-rolling at 160 °C with a 50% of reduction ratio, maximum bending strength and Young's modulus of RS resin reaches 192 MPa and 10.2 GPa, respectively, after pretreatment by immersion in 40 vol% ethanol, and 229 MPa and 12.5 GPa, respectively, after pretreatment by immersion in boiling water. Increased strength of the material is attributed to the increased content of aggregated strands and intramolecular linking of ß sheets (attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) and higher crystallinity (X-ray diffraction analysis). After hot-pressing and hot-rolling, RS resins have a stable decomposition temperature (297 °C).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) remain common and life-threatening, especially in developing countries. Knowledge of the aetiological agents responsible for these infections is essential to guide empiric therapy and develop a rational public health policy. To date most data has come from patients admitted to tertiary referral hospitals in Asia and there is limited aetiological data at the provincial hospital level where most patients are seen. METHODS: We conducted a prospective Provincial Hospital-based descriptive surveillance study in adults and children at thirteen hospitals in central and southern Viet Nam between August 2007-April 2010. The pathogens of CNS infection were confirmed in CSF and blood samples by using classical microbiology, molecular diagnostics and serology. RESULTS: We recruited 1241 patients with clinically suspected infection of the CNS. An aetiological agent was identified in 640/1241 (52%) of the patients. The most common pathogens were Streptococcus suis serotype 2 in patients older than 14 years of age (147/617, 24%) and Japanese encephalitis virus in patients less than 14 years old (142/624, 23%). Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed in 34/617 (6%) adult patients and 11/624 (2%) paediatric patients. The acute case fatality rate (CFR) during hospital admission was 73/617 (12%) in adults and to 42/624 (7%) in children. CONCLUSIONS: Zoonotic bacterial and viral pathogens are the most common causes of CNS infection in adults and children in Viet Nam.
