RESUMO

Membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) have aroused increasing attention due to their excellent performance in treating wastewater, where the membranes behave as bio-carriers for microorganisms and bubbleless air diffusers. The MABR technology has not been fully commercialized due to reactor design and low total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency at short hydraulic retention times (HRT). In this study, a hybrid system of MABR 1 integrated with an anoxic nano-biotechnological reactor filled with Granulated Nanoscale Oxyhydroxides of Fe (GNOF) media was evaluated to assess the improvement in nitrogen removal performance at 12, 10, and 4 h of HRTs. At the same time, another MABR (MABR 2) was operated individually at 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 h of HRTs to assess the influence of HRT on nitrogen removal performance. An enhancement in removal performance was reported in the hybrid MABR-GNOF, achieving the highest removal efficiencies of 74.3 ± 3.1% for ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), 69.8 ± 2.1% for total nitrogen (TN), and 90.9 ± 1.7% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), at 12 h HRT. The hybrid MABR-GNOF system attained 18% higher nitrogen removal than the MABR-only system at 12 h of HRT. A simultaneous anoxic nitrification-denitrification and COD oxidation might be developed for the removal of COD, NH4+-N, and TN from domestic wastewater by using GNOF as an electron acceptor in the hybrid MABR-GNOF unit. The findings in this study confirmed the possibility of integration of GNOF and MABR on a pilot scale and are promising for the application of this hybrid system on a full scale.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to identify and critically appraise the quality of model-based economic evaluation studies in mental health prevention. METHODS: A systematic search was performed on MEDLINE, EMBASE, EconLit, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Two reviewers independently screened for eligible records using predefined criteria and extracted data using a pre-piloted data extraction form. The 61-item Philips Checklist was used to critically appraise the studies. Systematic review registration number: CRD42020184519. RESULTS: Forty-nine studies were eligible to be included. Thirty studies (61.2%) were published in 2015-2021. Forty-seven studies were conducted for higher-income countries. There were mainly cost-utility analyses (n = 31) with the dominant primary outcome of quality-adjusted life year. The most common model was Markov (n = 26). Most of the studies were conducted from a societal or health care perspective (n = 37). Only ten models used a 50-year time horizon (n = 2) or lifetime horizon (n = 8). A wide range of mental health prevention strategies was evaluated with the dominance of selective/indicate strategy and focusing on common mental health problems (e.g., depression, suicide). The percentage of the Philip checkilst's criteria fulfilled by included studies was 69.3% on average and ranged from 43.3 to 90%. Among three domains of the Philip checklist, criteria on the model structure were fulfilled the most (72.1% on average, ranging from 50.0% to 91.7%), followed by the data domain (69.5% on average, ranging from 28.9% to 94.0%) and the consistency domain (54.6% on average, ranging from 20.0% to 100%). The practice of identification of 'relevant' evidence to inform model structure and inputs was inadequately performed. The model validation practice was rarely reported. CONCLUSIONS: There is an increasing number of model-based economic evaluations of mental health prevention available to decision-makers, but evidence has been limited to the higher-income countries and the short-term horizon. Despite a high level of heterogeneity in study scope and model structure among included studies, almost all mental health prevention interventions were either cost-saving or cost-effective. Future models should make efforts to conduct in the low-resource context setting, expand the time horizon, improve the evidence identification to inform model structure and inputs, and promote the practice of model validation.

The membranes of a Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) function as bubble-less air diffusers and bio-carriers. Recent bench-scale experiments reported that the shape of membranes influenced the oxygen transfer and utilization rates, which in turn affected the pollutant removal performance of the MABR. In this study, two pilot-scale MABRs using multi-layer hollow fiber membranes with the relaxation rates of 0.1-1.8% (MABR 1) and 1.0-2.8% (MABR 2) were used for the treatment of organics and nitrogen in real medium-strength domestic wastewater. Higher-relaxation-rate membranes have loose and more curved fiber bunch that may allow biofilm to grow more easily and let air diffuse more efficiently. MABR 2 had achieved better performance than MABR 1 at 12- and 6-h Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT), with respectively 0.7-4.3%, 17.7-18.1%, and 5.5-9.0% higher removal efficiencies for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Ammonia Nitrogen (NH4+), and Total Nitrogen (TN). The highest COD, NH4+, and TN removal efficiencies were 94.7%, 81.1%, and 57.1%, respectively, at 12 h HRT in MABR 2. The addition of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) gel beads carrying denitrifying bacteria had enhanced the denitrification in both the reactors. Increments of 5.0-9.0% and 6.6-12.3% were reported for TN removal efficiencies of MABR 1 and 2 combined with PVA gel, sequentially.

Quantification of plasma cell-free Epstein Barr virus DNA (cf EBV DNA) has been suggested as a promising liquid biopsy assay for screening and early detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the diagnostic value of this assay is currently not known in the population of Vietnam, one of the countries which contributed the most to the NPC cases. Herein, we have reported a highly sensitive quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)-based assay targeting cf EBV DNA for the detection of NPC. A standard curve with linear regression, R 2 = 0.9961 (range: 25-150 000 copies/mL) and a detection limit of 25 copies/mL were obtained using an EBV standard panel provided by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The clinical performance of this assay was assessed using plasma samples obtained from 261 Vietnamese individuals. The optimized qPCR assay detected cf EBV DNA in plasma with a sensitivity of 97.4% and a specificity of 98.2%. The absolute quantitative results of pretreatment cf EBV DNA and patient overall clinical stages were statistically correlated (P < .05). In summary, the remarkably high sensitivity and specificity of our optimized qPCR assay strongly supports the wide use of cf EBV DNA quantification as a routine noninvasive method in early diagnosis and management of patients with NPC.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are among the leading causes of hospitalization in children ≤5 years old. Rapid diagnostics of viral pathogens is essential to avoid unnecessary antibiotic treatment, thereby slowing down antibiotic-resistance. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of the Luminex xTAG Respiratory Viral Panel FAST v2 against viral specific PCR as reference assays for ARI in Vietnam. METHODS: Four hundred and forty two nose and throat swabs were collected in viral transport medium, and were tested with Luminex xTAG Respiratory Viral Panel FAST v2. Multiplex RT-PCR and single RT-PCR were used as references.    Results: Overall, viral pathogens were detected in a total count of 270/294 (91.8%, 95% CI 88.1-94.7) by the Luminex among reference assays, whilst 112/6336 (1.8%, 95% CI, 1.4-2.1) of pathogens were detected by the Luminex, but not by reference assays. Frequency of pathogens detected by Luminex and reference assays was 379 and 292, respectively. The diagnostic yield was 66.7% (295/442, 95%CI 62.1-71.1%) for the Luminex assay and 54.1% (239/442, 95% CI, 49.3-58.8%) for reference assays. The Luminex kit had higher yields for all viruses except influenza B virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and human bocavirus. High agreements between both methods [mean (range): 0.91 (0.83-1.00)] were found for 10/15 viral agents. CONCLUSIONS: The Luminex assay is a high throughput multiplex platform for rapid detection of common viral pathogens causing ARI. Although the current high cost may prevent Luminex assays from being widely used, especially in limited resource settings where ARI are felt most, its introduction in clinical diagnostics may help reduce unnecessary use of antibiotic prescription.

Topical PDT treatment of the common skin disease acne vulgaris is now in clinical use. Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is known to play an important role in acne. 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) supplementation leads to an enhanced porphyrin production in the bacteria. Subsequent illumination with light of the proper wavelengths can reduce the number of bacteria and this might at least partly explain the PDT effect on acne. We have assessed the effects of temperature on P. acnes washed cell suspensions incubated for 4 h with ALA or ALA methyl ester (m-ALA). The effect on porphyrin production of both the cell suspension incubation temperature as well as the initial growth temperature of the cultivated cells prior to harvesting and use in suspension experiments was investigated. The bacterial porphyrin content was estimated from fluorescence emission spectra. It was found that incubation with ALA or m-ALA at a temperature 42 degrees C resulted in an approx. 100% and 33% increase in the total amount of PDT-relevant porphyrins produced as compared to incubation at 37 degrees C. These results support increasing the skin temperature during incubation with ALA or m-ALA in the clinic. The initial growth temperature, prior to the incubation, had no apparent effect on the ALA or m-ALA induced porphyrins. Activation energy studies indicate slightly higher temperature dependence in the case of ALA produced porphyrins as compared to m-ALA produced porphyrins (77 and 65 kJ mol(-1), respectively).
