RESUMO

Introduction: In the present study the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of Bisphenol-A glycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA) was studied on the third instar larvae of transgenic Drosophila melanogaster (hsp70-lacZ)Bg9. Materials and methods: The concentration of BisGMA i.e. 0.005, 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020 M were established in diet and the larvae were allowed to feed on it for 24 h. Results: A dose dependent significant increase in the activity of ß-galactosidase was observed compared to control. A significant dose dependent tissue damage was observed in the larvae exposed to 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020 M of BisGMA compared to control. A dose dependent significant increase in the Oxidative stress markers was observed compared to control. BisGMA also exhibit significant DNA damaged in the third instar larvae of transgenic D. melanogaster (hsp70-lacZ)Bg9 at the doses of 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020 M compared to control. Conclusion: BisGMA at 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020 M was found to be cytotoxic for the third instar larvae of transgenic D. melanogaster (hsp70-lacZ) Bg9.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Twin-block appliance therapy in patients with Class II Div 1 malocclusion positions the mandible anteroinferior leading to possible alterations in tongue pressure, tongue length, and the oropharynx. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the changes in tongue pressure, tongue length and dimension of the pharyngeal airway in Class II Division 1 subjects before and after twin-block therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four subjects were selected, in the range of 10-14 years (mean-12 years). The tongue pressure was recorded at three regions with sensors placed at the incisive papilla and bilaterally at the molar region of the palate for four minutes. The root mean square (RMS) values were recorded and used for further analysis. Evaluation of tongue length and pharyngeal airway dimension was done using a lateral cephalogram. All the measurements were done before and after twin-block appliance therapy. The paired t-test was performed to compare the changes. RESULTS: Resting tongue pressures decreased from pre-treatment levels to post-treatment at all three regions. Change in ANB angle was found to have a significant negative correlation with tongue length, and pharyngeal airway dimension, a significant positive correlation with pressure at incisive papilla and left molar region and no correlation at right molar region. CONCLUSION: There was a decrease in resting tongue pressure as the malocclusion was corrected from Class II to Class I. Hence, this decrease in pressure could be a contributory factor in the maintenance of the dental equilibrium as lighter forces exist in the oral cavity.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Aesthetic facial animation is mostly reported to be due to a close relationship between soft and hard tissue i.e. dynamic smile with appropriate tooth proportions. But variations in tooth size have been seen among various ethnic populations globally. AIM: To evaluate the size and morphology of maxillary anterior teeth, the tooth with maximum variation both mesiodistally and cervicoincisally. Also, the tooth to tooth ratio in percentage of the mean tooth sizes in both genders in patients with aesthetically acceptable smile decided by a panel in North Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 subjects (50 males and 50 females) were taken and a video clip of their dynamic smile was captured .The smiles were analyzed by a panel and the tooth proportions of the selected attractive smiles were evaluated in both males and females separately. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis using Microsoft Excel 2007 software; test used was Unpaired t-test and also Mean ± S.D., Variance, Ratio of W/L and its ranges were calculated. Significance is assessed at 5% level of significance. RESULTS: The mesiodistal width and cervicoincisal length of maxillary central incisor was greater compared to lateral incisor and canine in both males and females. There was a statistically significant difference between the width/length ratio of maxillary anterior teeth between males and females.Canine and Lateral incisor showed maximum variation mesio-distally and cervico-incisally. CONCLUSION: A smile is more pleasing if the visible teeth are in proper morphological proportions. Thus, it relates that teeth play a vital role in increasing the attractiveness of a smile. The mean coronal width/length ratio displayed a more square like tooth form for both males and females.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Corticotomy is an effective method of accelerating the orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the treatment time for the extraction space closure, between corticotomy assisted and conventional orthodontic tooth movement and to check the alveolar bone thickness before and after corticotomy procedure in the corticotomy group. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Cross-sectional clinical study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (age>15 y) requiring orthodontic treatment with upper anterior retraction in the extraction space of 1(st) premolar were selected and were randomised into control and corticotomy group each group consisted of 10 subjects. Pre retraction, corticotomy was performed in the maxillary anterior segment. The pre and post retraction CT scans were recorded and the thickness of the alveolar plates were measured at crestal level (S1), mid root level (S2) and apical level (S3) PreTreatment (T1). The same measurements were repeated after incisor retraction was completed PostTreatment (T2). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Student's t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in retraction time (days) between control and corticotomy groups (p<0.001). Also, there were significant difference in total alveolar bone thickness at the crest region for all the four incisor teeth (p<0.05). A significant difference was observed in total alveolar bone thickness at the S2 and S3 level for 11, 21 and 11, 12 and 22 (p<0.05) respectively. CONCLUSION: Alveolar corticotomies not only accelerates the orthodontic treatment but, also provides the advantage of increased alveolar width to support the teeth and overlying structures.
