Background: The present in vitro study aimed to compare the efficacy of a 25% copolymer of acrylic acid and maleic acid [poly(AA-co-MA)] and 17% of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in removing calcium hydroxide (CH) from root canals using the master apical file (MAF) and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI). Material and Methods: Fifty-eight teeth were dressed with CH. After 10 days, CH was removed using MAF+EDTA, MAF+poly(AA-co-MA), PUI+EDTA, and PUI+poly (AA-co-MA) (n=12). Ten teeth were used as controls. Residual CH was evaluated using a four-grade scoring system. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U, Friedman, and Dunn-Bonferroni tests. Results: In the MAF and PUI groups, there was no significant difference in the CH scores between EDTA and Poly(AA-co-MA) (p<0.083). Although EDTA and poly(AA-co-MA) had lower CH scores when used with PUI, no significant difference was found between the two agents (p<0.083). Conclusions: Poly(AA-co-MA) did not remove significantly more CH than EDTA when used with MAF or PUI. Key words:Calcium hydroxide, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, Acrylic acid, Maleic acid.

With provisional restorations, properties such as flexural strength play a key role in maintaining the abutment teeth in position over the interim period until the final restorations are placed. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the flexural strength of four commonly used provisional resin materials. Ten identical 25 × 2 × 2 mm specimens were made from four different groups of provisional resin material, namely 1: SR Ivocron (Ivoclar Vivadent) cold-polymerized poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA), 2: S Ivocron (Ivoclar Vivadent) heat-polymerized PMMA, 3: Protemp (3M Germany-ESPE) auto-polymerized bis-acryl composite, and 4: Revotek LC (GC Corp, Tokyo) light-polymerized urethane dimethacrylate resin. The mean values of the flexural strength of each group were calculated and the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests. The mean values (MPa) were as follows: for cold-polymerized PMMA, it was 125.90 MPa; for heat-polymerized PMMA, it was 140.00 MPa, with auto-polymerized bis-acryl composite 133.00 MPa; and for light-polymerized urethane dimethacrylate resin, it was 80.84 MPa. Thus, the highest flexural strength was recorded with heat-polymerized PMMA and the lowest flexural strength with light-polymerized urethane dimethacrylate resin, which was significantly low. The study did not detect a significant difference in the flexural strengths of cold PMMA, hot PMMA, and auto bis-acryl composite.

The rising incidence of obesity has coincided with rising levels of poor reproductive outcomes. The molecular basis for the association of infertility in obese males is now being explained through various mechanisms. Insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and changes in serum and gonadal concentrations of adipokines, like leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and ghrelin have been implicated as causes of male infertility in obese males. The effects of obesity and hypogonadism form a vicious cycle whereby dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis-due to the effect of the release of multiple mediators, thus decreasing GnRH release from the hypothalamus-causes decreases in LH and FSH levels. This leads to lower levels of testosterone, which further increases adiposity because of increased lipogenesis. Cytokines such as TNF-α and interleukins, sirtuins, and other inflammatory mediators like reactive oxygen species are known to affect fertility in obese male adults. There is evidence that parental obesity can be transferred through subsequent generations to offspring through epigenetic marks. Thus, negative expressions like obesity and infertility have been linked to epigenetic marks being altered in previous generations. The interesting aspect is that these epigenetic expressions can be reverted by removing the triggering factors. These positive modifications are also transmitted to subsequent generations.
