Synthesis, High-Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy, and Vibrational Structure of Cubane, C8H8.

Carbon-cage molecules have generated a considerable interest from both experimental and theoretical points of view. We recently performed a high-resolution study of adamantane (C10H16), the smallest hydrocarbon cage belonging to the diamandoid family ( Pirali , O. ; et al. J. Chem. Phys. 2012 , 136 , 024310 ). There exist another family of hydrocarbon cages with additional interesting chemical properties: the so-called platonic hydrocarbons that comprise dodecahedrane (C20H20) and cubane (C8H8). Both possess C-C bond angles that deviate from the tetrahedral angle (109.8°) of the sp(3) hybridized form of carbon. This generates a considerable strain in the molecule. We report a new wide-range high-resolution study of the infrared spectrum of cubane. The sample was synthesized in Bari upon decarboxylation of 1,4-cubanedicarboxylic acid thanks to the improved synthesis of literature. Several spectra have been recorded at the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. They cover the 600-3200 cm(-1) region. Besides the three infrared-active fundamentals (ν10, ν11, and ν12), we could record many combination bands, all of them displaying a well-resolved octahedral rotational structure. We present here a preliminary analysis of some of the recorded bands, performed thanks the SPVIEW and XTDS software, based on the tensorial formalism developed in the Dijon group. A comparison with ab initio calculations, allowing to identify some combination bands, is also presented.

Streptococcus bovis meningitis and carcinoma of the colon.

A 90-year-old woman who presented with Streptococcus bovis meningitis was found at autopsy to have a colonic carcinoma. Although the association between colonic carcinoma and S. bovis endocarditis or bacteremia is well-documented in the literature, S. bovis meningitis is uncommon. A thorough investigation of the gastrointestinal tract should be undertaken in patients with S. bovis infections even in the absence of gastrointestinal signs or symptoms.

Sulfated trihexosylceramide from gastric mucosa containing N-acetylglucosamine.

A new sulfated glycosphingolipid containing N-acetylglucosamine has been isolated from hog gastric mucosa by extraction with sodium acetate. Based on the results of partial acid hydrolysis, sequential degradation with specific glycosidases, and methylation analysis of the native and desulfated compound, the structure of this glycolipid is proposed to be: SO3H(leads to 6)GlcNAc-(beta 1 leads to 3)Gal(beta 1 leads to 4)Glc(1 leads to 1)Cer(GlcNAc, N-acetylglucosamine; Cer, ceramide).

The glycosphingolipids of rat sublingual and submaxillary glands.

1. Glycosphingolipids have been isolated from rat sublingual and submaxillary glands by the procedure involving lipid extraction, column fractionation and thin-layer chromatography. 2. The major neutral glycosphingolipids in rat sublingual and submaxillary glands were monohexosylceramide, dihexosylceramide, tetrahexosylceramide and pentahexosylceramide. Both types of glands exhibited a low content of trihexosylceramide. The fucose-containing glycosphingolipids were not found. 3. The acidic glycosphingolipids in rat sublingual and submaxillary glands were composed of monohexose sulfatide, dihexose sulfatide and monosialo-and disialogangliosides of hematoside series. In addition, small quantities of gangliosides containing hexosamines were also present. 4. The distribution of acidic and neutral glycosphingolipids was similar in the sublingual and submaxillary glands, except for the tetrahexosylceramide and sultatides. Sublingual glands contained 1.5 and 3.0 times as much tetrahexosylceramide and sulfatides, respectively, as did submaxillary glands. 5. The glycosphingolipids of submaxillary and sublingual glands showed large similarity in fatty acid composition. The fatty acid composition of gangliosides resembled each other, but differed remarkably from those of sulfatides and neutral glycosphingolipids in the docosanoate content.
