RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is among the most common inflammatory conditions which is associated with many different factors. One of the contributing factors to the pathogenesis of this condition may compromise the defensive mechanism of antioxidants. The present study evaluates the antioxidant capacity of saliva in periodontal patients before and after periodontal treatment. METHODS: In this cross sectional study, 31 patients systemically healthy non smokers with chronic periodontitis were recruited. The antioxidant capacity of saliva was measured before the initial phase of periodontal therapy and after completion of the treatment. Data were analyzed using SPSS 19 software. Paired T-Test, Independent sample T-test and ANOVA tests were used as appropriated. RESULTS: The mean and standard deviation antioxidant capacity of the saliva after the treatment.(0.962± 0.287µM)was significantly higher than before the treatment (0.655 ± 0.281 µM ,p<0.001). The mean difference of antioxidant capacity of the saliva before and after periodontal treatment was higher among men than among women; however, the difference was not significant (P=0.07). The mean difference of salivary antioxidant capacity was not significantly differed among different ages (P=0.772). CONCLUSIONS: The antioxidant capacity of saliva was higher after periodontal therapy among patients with periodontal disease, however the change was not varied across the ages and gender. Therefore, the alterations in the defensive mechanism of antioxidants could be the key factors contribute to the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.

RESUMO

Bone mineral densitometry was done in 217 women in their menopausal period using Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) method. All the patients were presented with different post menopausal syndromes. Quantification of bone mineral density were done in proximal femur and lumber spines of all the patients along with plain X-ray of the sites. One hundred and thirty nine patients showed normal bone mineral density in our study. Rest 78 patients showed declination of bone mineral density from mild osteopenia to severe osteoporosis. We conclude that Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry bone mineral measurement is an unique, non-invasive method in detecting bone mass disorder in post-menopausal women with low back pain and should be the first choice of investigation, for the earliest detection of bone loss and thus fracture risk can be reduced by appropriate management.

RESUMO

Thyroid cancer can appear as metastatic disease of an unknown primary origin, and fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) positron emission tomographic (PET) studies are helpful in the workup evaluation of these patients. The authors describe two patients who had metastatic disease from an unknown primary lesion. F-18 FDG PET studies played an important role in localizing the primary malignant site in the thyroid gland. The utility of F-18 FDG imaging in decreasing the number of procedures, cost, and inconvenience to patients is shown clearly in both cases.

RESUMO

An ectopic twin pregnancy was reported in a 37-year-old woman with a history of tubectomy for permanent sterilization 10 years earlier. Ectopic pregnancy is common, but twin ectopic pregnancy is a rarer case.

RESUMO

It is well known that, structurally, the people of Asia are shorter than Europeans. The size of different organs of the foetus may also vary accordingly. To assess this, 793 foetuses between 16 and 40 weeks' gestation were studied and 1175 kidneys were measured on ultrasonograms. Only normal pregnancies were included in the study. Our results show that, in the main, the mean length of foetal kidneys in the present study is either slightly higher or similar to that previously reported by many authors. In this study, the average kidney length at full term is 3.95 cm. An excellent correlation was seen between gestational age, biparietal diameter, femoral length and renal length measurement.

RESUMO

Tc-99m labelled 2,6-diethylphenylcarbamoylmethyliminodiacetic acid (EHIDA) is a non-toxic radiopharmaceutical that was found to undergo rapid biliary excretion in a normal human, with accumulation of radioactivity in the gall bladder and intestine. Images in normal subjects and nonjaundiced patients showed rapid concentration of tracer by the liver and the passage of the same into the intestine within 15 to 40 minutes, with or without visualization of the gall bladder. In the jaundiced patient, the tracer blood clearance was delayed and urinary excretion was increased. Tc-99m EHIDA has been extensively investigated in 1634 patients to evaluate its performance in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary disorders.
