[The pathogenetic and prognostic value of autonomic-hormonal shifts in ischemic stroke]. / O patogeneticheskoi i pronosticheskoi tsennosti vegetativno-gormonal'nykh sdvigov pri ishemicheskom insul'te.

The paper deals with a study into the status of the autonomic nervous system and hormonal homeostasis in 58 patients with ischemic brain stroke. The blood content of cortisol, thyroxine, triiodothyronine and prolactin was measured by radioimmunoassay. The data obtained point to the differences in the degree of vegetative and hormonal imbalance depending on hemispheric lateralization of a pathological focus and the level of brain injury. The intensity of the vegetative and hormonal disorders correlates with the gravity of neurological deficit, with the development of secondary lesions of the cardiovascular system in cerebral dyshemia, being closely related to the disease outcome. The study creates prerequisites for the design of optimal methods of pharmacological correction of vegetative and hormonal dysfunction in patients with cerebrovascular diseases.

[Pharmacokinetic aspects of anticonvulsant therapy with benzonal]. / Nekotorye farmakokineticheskie aspekty protivosudorozhnoi terapii benzonalom.

Major pharmacokinetic parameters of the Soviet anticonvulsive drug benzobarbital used with different regimens of administration (single and prolonged) are described. The authors have studied the interrelationship between benzobarbital and carbamazepine when these drugs are used in combination and drawn a conclusion as to their weak pharmacokinetic synergism. On the basis of the established pharmacokinetic parameters a number of practical inferences pertaining to the mode of benzobarbital administration have been made.

[Role of the pharmacokinetic parameters of carbamazepine in optimizing epilepsy treatment]. / Rol' nekotorykh farmakokineticheskikh parametrov karbamazepina v optimizatsii antiépilepticheskogo lecheniia.

In 14 epileptic patients the authors determined concentrations of carbamazepine, its total and relative clearance, the period of half-elimination and the elimination constant. Blood levels of carbamazepine were assayed by gas liquid chromatography. The pharmacokinetic parameters have been found to be important for specifying the causes of dissociation between the level of blood anticonvulsant and the therapeutic effect when the attacks cannot be controlled or there were signs of intoxication. The mean diagrams of fluctuations of blood concentrations of the drug in the interval between single doses indicate the dependence of the clinical effect on the amplitude of fluctuations and create the prerequisites for the optimization of anticonvulsive therapy.

[Concentration of phenobarbital in biological fluids during the treatment of epilepsy patients]. / O kontsentratsii fenobarbitala v biologicheskikh zhidkostiakh pri lechenii bol'nykh épilepsiei.

Using gas liquid chromatography, the authors studied phenobarbital levels in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid of 41 epileptic patients following the administration of this anticonvulsant alone. The data obtained showed variations in the concentration of blood phenobarbital at various time intervals after the intake of the drug and a certain correlation between its level and the therapeutic effect. The ratio of phenobarbital level in the cerebrospinal fluid to that in the blood indicates that phenobarbital penetrates the blood-brain barrier. Fluctuations in the blood phenobarbital content from one administration to another is important for selecting its optimal dosage and the interval between intakes.

[State of humoral immunity in epilepsy patients]. / Sostoianie gumoral'nogo immuniteta u bol'nykh épilepsiei.

The results of examining the content of immunoglobulins and determining the presence of organ-specific anti-encephalic antibodies in the serum of patients with epilepsy of vascular and non-vascular genesis give one grounds to regard the lowered level of the immunoglobulins as a state of the immune system characteristic of epilepsy and as a factor in whose presence an epileptic seizure starts and develops. The lowering of the immunoglobulin level and the presence of anti-encephalic antibodies mainly against the thalamus in epileptic patients is, undoubtedly, of an importance for disclosing certain links of the disease pathogenesis. It is quite probably, that the data obtained are reflecting one more manifestation of the combined affection of the immunocompetent and the nervous systems.
