[Cytogenetic changes in peripheral blood lymphocytes in people with impaired thyroid status]. / Tsitogeneticheskie izmeneniia v limfotsitakh periferichskoi krovi lits s narushennym tireoidnyum statusom.

Increased counts of cells with chromosome aberrations were revealed in peripheral blood lymphocytes of subjects with thyroid dysfunction: 5.5 +/- 0.6% in hypothyrosis, 9.0 +/- 1.8% in hyperthyroidism, and 2.5 +/- 0.1% in controls (20 donors). The aberrations are mainly presented by paired and solitary fragments, rarely by chromatid translocations; in two patients with hyperthyroidism dicentrics were detected. Distribution of aberration types varied. In hypothyrosis chromosome aberrations were two times more incident than chromatid ones. In hyperthyroidism chromosome and chromatid aberrations were approximately equally incident. These results may be used to explain the causes of unfavorable outcomes of pregnancy in patients with thyroid diseases.

[The results of an epidemiological study of congenital developmental defects in children in cities with different levels of atmospheric pollution]. / Rezul'taty épidemiologicheskogo izucheniia vrozhdennykh porokov razvitiia u detei v gorodakh s raznym urovnem zagriazneniia atmosfernogo vozdukha.

In 1984-1987 a genetic monitoring of congenital malformations (CM) was carried out in children in three towns of the Ukraine, which showed different air pollution levels. In addition to the official information on the total incidence of CM detected in maternity hospitals, the data on 18 cases of CM selected for the genetic monitoring were analysed. Each CM case and cases with normal labors were recorded in special cards taking into account all the known causes and conditions for malformations. The findings were analysed by one- and two-dimensional statistical methods. It is concluded that the rate of mutation in the polluted town is increased and there is its relationship both to the total emission of pollutants and to mutagen uptake.

The mutagenic effect of microwaves (2450 MHz, 500 mu W/cm2, 30 days, 7 h/day) on rats was shown to decrease under the influence of thyroxine (2.5 mu g/100 g) administered over a two-week period. The major role of thyroid hormones in the formation of the antimutagenic effect of nonionizing radiation (2450 MHz, 10 mu W/cm2, 30 days, 7 h/day) was confirmed by the experiments with the parathyroid gland being removed.

[The evaluation of the mutagenic hazard of atmospheric air pollution for an urban population]. / Otsenka mutagennoi opasnosti zagriaznennogo atmosfernogo vozdukha dlia naseleniia gorodov.

The authors describe the results of a genetic monitoring made in three towns of the Ukraine, which differ in the levels of polluted atmospheric air. Spontaneous abortions (SA) were selected as an index for genetic health of the population. The total number of CA, which were detected by primary documentation in the studied towns, the number of SA in early periods of pregnancy, and the incidence of SA, probably, of mutagenic origin, which is determined by multi-variance analysis, are greater in the contaminated towns than in comparatively pure towns. The findings suggest that the achieved level of atmospheric air pollution in some towns of the Ukraine is genetically significant.

[Status metric analysis of epidemiological data on congenital developmental defects caused by environmental pollution]. / Statusmetricheskii analiz dannykh épidemiologicheskogo izucheniia vrozhdennykh porokov razvitiia, obuslovlennykh zagriazneniem okruzhaiushchei sredy.

Status metry was used to determine the portion of congenital developmental abnormalities (CDA) of obscure etiology (probably of mutation origin) among the total number of CDA in 3 cities of the Ukraine. The contribution of CDA determined by new mutations correlates with the reported data and corresponds with the level of atmospheric air pollution in the cities under study. Status metry made it also possible to define the tendencies and magnitude of the influence of factors involved in CDA formation. The conclusion is made about adequacy of the use of status metry for indirect estimation of the rate of the mutation process and its modification under the effect of environmental pollution.

[Quantitative patterns in the cytogenetic action of microwaves]. / K voprosu o kolichestvennykh zakonomernostiakh tsitogeneticheskogo deistviia mikrovoln.

It was shown on hepatocytes of albino mongrel rats that the energy flow density (EFD) of 100 muW/cm2 approximated the level at which the mutagenic effects of microwaves started developing (3,000 MHz, pulse frequency 400 Hz, 60 days, 12 h a day). The severity of the mutagenic effects of radiation with EFD of 100, 500 and 2,500 muW/cm2 depended on the type of the microwave generation that was responsible for the energy loading variations. The increase in the total radiation energy levelled the mutagenic effects of microwaves of all three intensities.

The mutagenic effect of microwaves (2,450 or 2,750 MHz, 500 microW/cm2, 30 days, 7 h a day) increases with both low and high thyroid hormone content in rats. This indicates that normal functioning of the thyroid gland is an important condition for the stabilization of chromosome integrity under the effect of nonionizing radiation of microwaves.

[The biological effect of low-frequency noise (cytogenetic and immunologic studies)]. / O biologicheskom deistvii nizkochastotnogo shuma (tsitogeneticheskie i immunologicheskie issledovaniia).

The study revealed that during 3 months noise with the frequency of 31.5 Hz and intensity of 90 dB modified the integrity of hepatocyte chromosomes, activated C-chair and oppressed B-chain immunity of white random-bred male rats aged 3-4 months.

Noise at 40-12,000 hz frequency and 100 dBA with maximums in medium and high frequency ranges, maintained for 3 months and 4 hours per day did not change the number of chromosome aberration cells in the spinal marrow, but decreased by 1,3 the number of the aberrant hepatocytes in male rats. This was apparently caused by the mitotic activity of the liver parenchyma and related elimination of the damaged cells. The noise maintained for 4 months caused an increase by 1,7 in aberrant hepatocytes. This cytogenetic effect is regarded as potentially dangerous.

The growth of rat body mass was shown to abate during the prolonged (45 days, 7 or 14 hours a day) microwave irradiation of 10 to 60 microW/cm2 both of continuous (2375 MHz) and pulse (2750 or 546 MHz) generation.

[Cytogenetic effect of testosterone on rat hepatocytes]. / Tsitogeneticheskoe vliianie testosterona na kletki pecheni krys.

The capacity of testosterone administered in vivo in the form of testosterone propionate (TP), to modify chromosome integrity and a search for certain conditions under which the hormone manifested cytogenetic activity, were determined. TP was administered at a single dose or for 12 days at various doses to random bred albino male rats aged 3-4.5 mos. Single administration of the hormone to animals aged 4-4.5 mos. did not result in an increase in the number of hepatocytes with chromosome aberrations even at a dose exceeding 6-7-fold daily production. However after daily administration for 12 days at a dose exceeding only twice the daily one, TP increased 1.5-fold the number of cells with damaged chromosomes. In animals aged 3-3.5 mos. the same scheme of administration of TP turned out ineffective. The results obtained are under discussion.

[Effect of microwaves of nonthermal intensity on the number of aberrant hepatocytes in rats]. / Vliianie mikrovoln neteplovoi intensivnosti na chislo aberrantnykh gepatotsitov u krys.

It was shown on rats that the effect of permanently generated electromagnetic field (a whole-body exposure) during 45 days (7h a day, the energy flux density of 10 microW/cm2) caused a decrease in number of hepatocytes with the affected chromosomes. Some part of animals exposed to higher energy loading (PD - 50 microW/cm2, 20 days, 7 h/day) showed the increase of aberrant cells level. A single exposure at 500 microW/cm2 and a ten-fold exposure at 50 microW/cm2 (10 days, 7h a day) were shown to be ineffective.

Thyroidectomy was shown to prevent the development of the antimutagenic effect in rats exposed to microwaves. At the same time, exposure to the electromagnetic field decreased the mutagenic effect of excess thyroxin administered during irradiation.

[Effect of thyroxine in the G0 stage of the cell cycle on the yield of chromosome aberrations in rat hepatocytes and human lymphocytes after X-irradiation]. / Vliianie tiroksina v stadii G0 kletochnogo tsikla na vykhod aberratsii khromosom v gepatotsitakh krys i limfotsitakh cheloveka posle rentgenovskogo oblucheniia.

A study was made of the mechanism of a modifying action of thyroxin (T4) on the chromosome integrity after the application thereof in vivo and in vitro following a single whole-body exposure to X-radiation with a dose of 2.19 Gy. It is concluded that T4 influences the quantity of cells with chromosome aberrations stimulating the recovery of the chromosome integrity: the stimulation can be brought about at the G0 stage of the cell cycle as a result of the direct effect of the hormone on a cell.
