RESUMO

Light routing and manipulation are important aspects of integrated optics. They essentially rely on beam splitters which are at the heart of interferometric setups and active routing. The most common implementations of beam splitters suffer either from strong dispersive response (directional couplers) or tight fabrication tolerances (multimode interference couplers). In this paper we fabricate a robust and simple broadband integrated beam splitter based on lithium niobate with a splitting ratio achromatic over more than 130 nm. Our architecture is based on spatial adiabatic passage, a technique originally used to transfer entirely an optical beam from a waveguide to another one that has been shown to be remarkably robust against fabrication imperfections and wavelength dispersion. Our device shows a splitting ratio of 0.52±0.03 and 0.48±0.03 from 1500 nm up to 1630 nm. Furthermore, we show that suitable design enables the splitting in output beams with relative phase 0 or π. Thanks to their independence to material dispersion, these devices represent simple, elementary components to create achromatic and versatile photonic circuits.

RESUMO

We have studied (Tb1-xLax)2Mo2O7 pyrochlores by neutron diffraction and muSR at ambient and under applied pressure. (Tb,La) substitution expands the lattice and induces a change from a spin-glass-like state (x=0) to a noncollinear ferromagnet (x=0.2). In the ferromagnetic structure, the Tb moments orient close to their local anisotropy axes as for an ordered spin ice, while the Mo ones orient close to the net moment. The temperature dependence of the muSR relaxation rates and static local fields suggests a second transition of dynamical nature below the Curie transition. Under pressure, the long range order breaks down and a spin-glass-like state is recovered. The whole set of data provides a microscopic picture of the spin correlations and fluctuations in the region of the ferromagnetic-spin-glass threshold.

RESUMO

We evaluate the trefoil channels present between the holes of microstructured fibers as a potential dense array of small waveguides. In channels with an inner radius of 330nm, calculations indicate possible propagation with a mode waist of ~350nm at lambda=670nm, near to the diffraction limit. Actual measurements have been performed on a 1-meter fiber section, with injection by a microlensed fiber and mapping of output by near-field scanning optical microscopy. They show that light can be output in individual channels or in several of them, depending on the injection. The observed waist is ~500nm, possibly due to experimental widening. Estimated propagation losses are <20dB/m. Since each channel occupies only 2microm2, this structure opens a way to dense parallel optical processing.
