BACKGROUND: Fanconi anaemia is a genetic disease characterized by congenital abnormalities, progressive bone marrow failure, and a higher predisposition of oral squamous cell carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of oral mucosa lesions in patients with Fanconi anaemia without hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). PROCEDURE: Patients with Fanconi anaemia who had not undergone HSCT was cross-sectional evaluated for the presence of oral lesions. RESULTS: The sample was composed of 78 male and 60 female patients, with a median age of 9 years. Of the 138 patients, approximately 45% manifested at least one oral mucosa abnormality: 35 patients (25%) presented with traumatic injuries, and 16 (12%) exhibited leukoplakia. The following lesions were observed in low prevalence: aphthous ulcers, atrophic tongue, petechiae and hematomas, gingival hyperplasia, mucoceles, herpes, hyperpigmentation, haemangioma, non-neoplastic proliferative lesions, neutropenic ulcers, papilloma, and candidiasis. CONCLUSION: There was a high prevalence of oral leukoplakias in patients with Fanconi anaemia who had not undergone HSCT. It highlights the need of regular oral screenings in this cohort of concern for head and neck malignancies and suggests that oral leukoplakias should be further investigated as part of the syndrome phenotype.

Long-term survivors of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are recognized as a risk group for malignization. Malignant oral neoplasms are increasingly being reported in the literature as a consequence of lesions of chronic graft-versus-host disease, and prolonged multidrug treatment to control its manifestations. This report describes a 43-year-old patient who, after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, developed an oral squamous cell carcinoma secondary to the use of azathioprine, cyclosporine, prednisone, and tacrolimus, associated with multiorgan chronic graft-versus-host disease involving the oral mucosa, skin, eyes, and liver. This report aims to discuss the possible role of immunosuppressant therapy for chronic graft-versus-host disease on the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma, and the relevance of a close oral follow-up of patients to detect dysplastic or malignant alterations at an early stage.

In this work we investigated the effect from fish oil (FO) supplementation, rich in n-3 fatty acids, on an antidepressant effect on adult rats in Phase A (supplementation during pregnancy and lactation) and phase B (supplementation during post-weaning until adulthood). During Phase A, female rats, used as matrix to obtain male rats, were divided in three groups: FO (daily supplemented), CF (coconut fat daily supplemented) and control (not supplemented). Our results showed that adult rats whose mothers were supplemented with FO during Phase A and rats supplemented during phase B demonstrated a significantly decreased immobility time when compared to control and CF groups. There was no difference in neither motor activity nor anxiety behavior in the three groups excluding false positive results. Our results suggest that n-3 fatty acids supplementation during Phases A and B had a beneficial effect on preventing the development of depression-like behavior in adult rats.
