RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The Syrian war created a mass exodus of people to neighboring countries. Jordan hosts approximately 1.4 million Syrians who sought refuge and protection. This research represents an effort to understand the subjective narratives of Syrian refugee women's war traumatic experiences and displacement challenges while living in Jordan and the consequences on their physical and mental health. METHODS: Data gathered between March and June 2014 included 24 in-depth interviews with Syrian refugee women who sought services from humanitarian organizations in Jordan. Interviews were conducted in Arabic and were audio recorded. A team of four researchers translated and transcribed the interviews. Group narrative methodology was utilized to analyze the interviews. RESULTS: The study suggests that Syrian refugee women experienced diverse war atrocities including shelling, loss of property, separation from family members, and threats to their lives and their beloved ones, among a few. In Jordan, they reported on multiple displacement challenges, which are perceived as a continuous traumatic experience, as well as somatization. Narratives of women also included sequelae to their physical and mental health due to such stressors. Barriers to obtaining physical and mental health services are discussed, including inadequate medical treatment, lack of mental health services, and stigma on mental health, which might be associated to somatization of mental illnesses. CONCLUSION: It is crucial that humanitarian organizations and host countries like Jordan bear the responsibility to enhancing accessibility to comprehensive trauma-focused physical and mental health services for Syrian refugees in a culturally and gender sensitive manner.

RESUMO

Various flavonoid scaffold based derivatives viz furochalcones (3a-e, 6a-d and 9a-d), furoflavones (10a-d, 11a-d, 12a-d, 18a&b), flavones (21a-d), furoaurones (13a,b, 14a-d and 15a-d) and 7-styrylfurochromones (22a-d and 25a-e) were designed and synthesized. The novel compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against a panel of 60 cancer cell lines comprising 9 types of tumors. Ten compounds belonging to the major subgroups of flavonoids viz furochalcones (3a, 3d, 6b, 9a and 9b), furoflavones (12a and 12c), furoaurones (15d), styrylfurochromones (25b and 25e) showed very promising activity. These active compounds were also evaluated in vitro as kinase inhibitors against CDK2/cyclin E1, CDK4/cyclin D1 and GSK-3ß and the best inhibition was displayed against GSK-3ß with the allylfurochalcone derivative 9b exhibiting 80% decrease in GSK-3ß catalytic activity. On the other hand, the styrylfurochromone 25e interestingly showed a 13% enhancement of GSK-3ß catalytic power and a 12% reduction in CDK4/cyclin D1 activity. Finally, the in vivo anti-tumor activity of 25e was evaluated against breast cancer induced in mice. The results showed a profound anti-tumor effect of 25e that accompanies a significant increase and decrease in the levels of GSK-3ß and cyclin D1, respectively.

RESUMO

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiological agent of Chagas disease, an important neglected illness affecting about 12-14 million people in endemic areas of Latin America. The chemotherapy of Chagas disease is quite unsatisfactory mainly due to its poor efficacy especially during the later chronic phase and the considerable well-known side effects. These facts emphasize the need to search for find new drugs. Diamidines and related compounds are minor groove binders of DNA at AT-rich sites and present excellent anti-trypanosomal activity. In the present study, six novel aromatic amidine compounds (arylimidamides and diamidines) were tested in vitro to determine activity against the infective and intracellular stages of T. cruzi, which are responsible for sustaining the infection in the mammalian hosts. In addition, their selectivity and toxicity towards primary cultures of cardiomyocyte were evaluated since these cells represent important targets of infection and inflammation in vivo. The aromatic amidines were active against T. cruzi in vitro, the arylimidamide DB1470 was the most effective compound presenting a submicromolar LD(50) values, good selectivity index, and good activity at 4 °C in the presence of blood constituents. Our results further justify trypanocidal screening assays with these classes of compounds both in vitro and in vivo in experimental models of T. cruzi infection.

RESUMO

This technique has been developed for the estimation of the infectivity of herpes simplex virus type I passage III on a tissue culture of Vero and HBK21. The plaque assay method was performed and the number of plaques on the two culture media was counted per each dilution from (10(-5) to 10(-8)). It was found that the number and the size of plaques in 10(-5) dilution are the best in the two types of tissue cultures. The number indicates the number of virus particle (per each dilution point), which can be used for infection of experimental animals to demonstrate its infectivity character.

RESUMO

The Cunningham and Sezenberg Technique (using mice sensitized lymphoid cells to SRBCs) was tested together with Trump's gel technique (using non sensitized mice lymphoid cell mixed with SRBCs and incubated in Marbrook culture chamber for sensitization). The study showed that the number of PFCs by the Cunningham slid was greater than that observed by the gel technique of Trump at the same lymphocyte concentration. Also it was observed that the Trump's method using the Marbrook tissue culture chamber was a time consuming technique than that obtained by the Cunningham technique.

RESUMO

The combination of patent ductus arteriosus, valvular pulmonary stenosis and/or peripheral pulmonary stenosis is very rare. We examined 23 children with this entity. In 9 children there were findings suggestive of rubella syndrome. 17 of the 23 children were born predominantly between October and March. Most of them showed low birth weights. Regarding the cardiac involvement there was no difference between the children with signs of rubella syndrome and those without noncardiac manifestations. In many children the symptoms of the patent ductus are leading. On evaluation of the noninvasive diagnostic procedures the ECG showed often a right ventricular hypertrophy and the x-ray of the chest showed in most cases a cardiac enlargement. In all patients a heart catheterization was necessary to establish the diagnosis. The review of the literature and the interpretation of our findings seems to suggest that the combination of a patent ductus arteriosus with pulmonary stenosis is a typical manifestation of rubella infection in the heart.
