RESUMO

This study aims to estimate the entrance surface dose (ESD) of a water phantom for kilovoltage x-ray beams using an air kerma area product meter (KAP meter) equipped in an x-ray unit. The KAP meter was calibrated in terms of the ESD determined by a plane-parallel ionization chamber based on a 60Co absorbed dose-to-water calibration coefficient, ${N}_{D,w}^{{}^{60}\mathrm{C}\mathrm{o}}$. The ESD measured using the KAP meter was verified by comparing it with that estimated by the air kerma calibration coefficient, NK, for x-ray beam qualities. The ratio of ESDs based on ${N}_{D,w}^{{}^{60}\mathrm{C}\mathrm{o}}$ and NK was 1.003 on average and independent of the beam quality. The ESD by the KAP meter was an agreement within ±1.5% with that measured using the plane-parallel chamber for 10 × 10-30 × 30 cm2 fields with a source-surface distance of 75-150 cm. It was possible to estimate the ESD directly in a water phantom for x-ray beams without correction factors compared to the existing air kerma calibration, using a KAP meter calibrated based on ${N}_{D,w}^{{}^{60}\mathrm{C}\mathrm{o}}$.

RESUMO

A radiophotoluminescent (RPL) glass rod dosimeter (GRD) and a small active volume p-type silicon diode detector (stereotactic field detector, SFD) were used for the measurement of Gamma-Knife output factors. All measurements were done using a 16 cm diameter spherical polystyrene phantom with the detector at the focal spot of Gamma-Knife. The GRD system consists of small rod-shaped glass chip detectors and an automatic readout device. The output factors measured with GRD of the 14, 8 and 4 mm helmets relative to the 18 mm helmet are 0.981, 0.942 and 0.877, respectively. Similarly, the corresponding output factors measured with SFD are 0.980, 0.949 and 0.867, respectively. These output factors are comparable with the values given in a recent publication and the values recommended by Elekta, the manufacture. The angular dependence of these detectors is also measured using a linear accelerator-based stereotactic radiosurgery system. For the Gamma-Knife angle ranging from 6 to 36 degrees from the vertical axis, the measured angular dependence of the GRD is approximately 1.0% at a 4 MV x-ray beam. The response of SFD indicates approximately 3-4% directional dependence for the same angle range for a 6 MV x-ray beam. The Gamma-Knife helmet output factors measured with SFD are corrected for angular dependence. In summary, GRD can be a good candidate in measuring small field output factor. Due to an angular dependence the small p-type diode detector needs care when calculating the Gamma-Knife dose.

RESUMO

Most dosimetry protocols recommend that calibration of plane-parallel ionization chambers be performed in an electron beam of sufficiently high energy by comparison with cylindrical chambers. For various plane-parallel chambers, the 1997 IAEA TRS-381 protocol includes an overall perturbation factor pQ for electron beams, a wall correction factor p(wall) for a 60Co beam and the product of two wall corrections k(att)k(m) for 60Co in-air calibration. The recommended values of p(wall) for plane-parallel chambers, however, are limited to certain phantom materials and a 60Co beam, and are not given for other phantom materials and x-ray beams. In this work, the p(wall) values of the commercially available NACP, PTW/Markus and PTW/Roos plane-parallel chambers in a solid water phantom have been determined with 60Co and 4 and 10 MV photon beams. The k(att)k(m) values for the NACP and PTW/Markus chambers have also been obtained. The wall correction factors p(wall) and k(att)k(m) have been determined by intercomparison with a calibrated Farmer chamber. The average value of p(wall) for these plane-parallel chambers was 1.005 +/- 0.1% (1 SD) for 60Co beams and 1.007 +/- 0.2% (1 SD) for both 4 MV and 10 MV photons. The k(att)k(m) values for the NACP and PTW/Markus chambers were about 1.5% lower than other published data.

RESUMO

We have developed a simple method for dose calculation in dual asymmetric open and irregular fields with four independent jaws and multileaf collimators. Our calculation method extends the scatter correction method of Kwa et al. [Med. Phys. 21, 1599-1604 (1994)] based on the principle of Day's equivalent-field calculation. The scatter correction factor was determined by the ratio of the derived doses of a smaller asymmetric open field or irregular field to a larger symmetric field. The algorithm with the scatter correction method can be calculated from output factors, tissue maximum ratios, and off-axis ratios for conventional symmetric fields. The doses calculated by this method were compared with the measured doses for various asymmetric open and irregular fields. The agreement between the calculated and measured doses for 4 and 10 MV photon beams was within 0.5% at the geometric center of the asymmetric open fields. For the asymmetric irregular fields with the same geometrical center, agreement within 1% was found in most cases.

RESUMO

A boy was born with Dandy-Walker syndrome associated with a giant occipital meningocele, cleft lip, and cleft palate. The meningocele was actually a component of the giant posterior fossa cyst which communicated with the fourth ventricle. A cyst-peritoneal shunt achieved a considerable decrease in the size of the meningocele, but decubital ulcers developed due to restricted head movement caused by the occipital lesion. Cranioplasty removed a wide area of the inferior occipital bone, and the boundary between the superior occipital and parietal bones was thinned to allow free bending of the bone flap. The meningocele was removed totally in the third operation, but infection of the wound and pneumonia developed, causing death. The coexistence of Dandy-Walker syndrome and occipital meningocele, together with midline facial anomalies, may suggest a later pathogenesis of Dandy-Walker syndrome than previously believed.

RESUMO

The stability of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) in various solutions was examined. hEGF degraded spontaneously and temperature-dependently to several degradation products in phosphate buffered saline or in 0.1 N acetic acid. The enzymatic degradation was observed in human serum or in pepsin/HCl solution. The structure and biological activities of these compounds were examined. The results suggest that the Asp11 and Trp50 residues are important for the receptor binding.

RESUMO

Glucose solution containing wheat straw hemicellulose-B and ovoglycopeptide (W-O-G) has no effect on Ehrlich ascites tumors but completely regresses Ehrlich solid tumors. The carcinostatic effect of this mixture is lost or decreases markedly whenever one of the three substances is lacking. For this glucose solution to possess a carcinostatic effect it is necessary that this hemicellulose-B of W-O-G is the hydrolysate of the extract with 20% NaOH from the residue obtained after extraction of wheat straw with 10% NaOH.
