RESUMO

To evaluate the prevalence of toxocariasis in children in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, 215 serum samples were examined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a recombinant Toxocara canis antigen. In the ELISA, 26 (12.1%) of 215 subjects were positive. In a dot-blot assay using 53 of 215 serum samples, the diagnostic results correlated with those obtained by the ELISA. Moreover, it has been confirmed that the recombinant T. canis antigen was highly specific for toxocariasis by ELISA using serum samples positive for antibody to Ascaris lumbricoides. Considering the specificity of the recombinant antigen to toxocariasis, the ELISA or dot-blot assay using the recombinant T. canis antigen is recommended in tropical and sub-tropical regions where various parasitic infections are commonly endemic.

RESUMO

We improved the dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA) reported by Itoh and Sato, and assessed the usefulness of this test for the diagnosis of amebiasis. The sensitivity of dot-ELISA was compared with that of plate ELISA, the indirect hemagglutination test (IHA), and the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFA) for the diagnosis of amebiasis. Of 37 serum samples from patients with documented amebiasis, 36 (97.3%) were positive by dot-ELISA. There was consistency among the results of dot-ELISA, plate ELISA, and IFA, although the positive rate of IHA was lower than that of the others (78.4%; 29 of 37 cases were positive). The specificities of dot-ELISA and plate ELISA were assessed using a total of 68 sera, collected from 38 patients infected with seven different parasites other than Entamoeba histolytica, 10 patients showing diarrhea or liver abscess without parasitic infection, and 20 healthy individuals. The two assays showed no false-positive results. There were no differences in sensitivity and specificity between dot-ELISA and plate ELISA. However, the dot-ELISA technique seems to be more feasible for clinical application than plate ELISA techniques, because the assay does not require any specific equipment.

RESUMO

The diagnosis of tuberculosis by X-ray radiogram is often confused with pulmonary carcinoma, bacillary and parasitic infections, and chronic mycosis. A case of pulmonary paragonimiasis misdiagnosed as tuberculosis by X-ray radiogram is reported. With this case, the smears of sputum were rechecked by an inspection technician's discernment, and Paragonimus eggs along with numerous eosinophils and Charcot-Leyden crystals were detected. In suspected cases of tuberculosis, a history of crab-eating plus sputum examinations, image findings, and serodiagnosis are necessary to rule out paragonimiasis.
