RESUMO

AIM: The object of this study is to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of caregivers of individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP). METHODS: Ninety-eight caregivers of individuals with CP (SG) and 196 caregivers of individuals without special needs (CG) completed the reduced version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). In addition, a questionnaire with demographic and socioeconomic questions was used. Groups were matched according to gender, schooling and family income. Fisher's exact tests, Chi square and Mann-Whitney, and bi/multivariate logistic regression were used (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The impact on OHRQoL was similar for SG and CG (OHIP-14 total score). For SG, the high negative impact was in the following OHIP domains: "Functional limitation", "Physical disability", "Psychological incapacity" and "Disadvantages". For SG, a higher number of caregivers was single, unemployed, received government financial aid. There was a statistically significant association between the number of children a caregiver has and a negative impact on OHRQoL. CONCLUSIONS: Being a caregiver of children with or without CP had a negative impact of similar magnitude on ORHQoL. The negative impact on OHRQoL of caregivers of children with CP was associated with having a high number of children; the higher the number of children, the greater the negative impact on their OHRQoL.

RESUMO

We investigated the association between bacterial vaginosis (BV) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in Papanicolaou smears in a Brazilian population. Cross-sectional analysis was performed on 673 samples collected from women attending public health centers in Olinda (PE, Brazil) by conventional cytology methodology and molecular analysis, PCR tests (GP5+/6+ and MY09/11). Cytological abnormalities, BV, and HPV-DNA were detected in 23 (3.4%) samples, 189 samples (28.1%), and 210 samples (31.2%), respectively. GP5+/6+ primers resulted in higher detection performance than MY09/11 primers, with 81% concordance between both primers (P < 0.0001). The occurrence of HPV-DNA and BV had ORs of 8.59 (P < 0.0001) and 2.91 (P = 0.0089) for abnormal cytology, respectively, whereas the concomitant presence of both infections showed an OR equal to 3.82 (P = 0.0054). Therefore, we observed an association between abnormal cervical cytology and HPV infection, BV, or both HPV infection and BV. These results highlight the necessity of monitoring patients presenting not only HPV, but also BV, as risk factors for cervical lesion development.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Angiogenesis and tumor invasion are complex processes that are mediated by various proteins, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-α) and the matrix-degrading enzymes metalloproteinase-2 and -9 (MMP-2, MMP-9). The aim of this study was to determine what roles MMP-2, MMP-9, and VEGF-α play in colorectal cancer (CRC) by correlating their expression levels with the cancer TNM stage, modified Dukes criteria, degree of cell differentiation, and long-term patient survival. METHODS: The present series consisted of tissue samples obtained from 180 patients who had undergone large bowel resection during 1995 and 2005 at the Luis Antonio Hospital. Archival paraffin-embedded CRC tissue samples were used to generate tissue microarray blocks, which were immunohistochemically stained for MMP-2, MMP-9, and VEGF-α. Three different grading systems were applied to evaluate staining intensity. Chi-squared Person test and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used, and values of p<0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: MMP-2 expression showed a significant association with more invasive cancer stages (p<0.001) and death (p<0.041). VEGF-α expression correlated with a high TNM stage (p<0.009), the degree of cell differentiation (p<0.025) and patient death as a result of disease (p<0.035). The Kaplan-Meier survival estimated that patients with strong staining for MMP-2 (log-rank x(2)=34.09; p<0.0001), MMP-9 (log-rank x(2)=12.83; p<0.0003) and VEGF (log-rank x(2)=33.9; p<0.0001) showed a greater tendency towards death during 60 months of follow up. CONCLUSIONS: The quantification of VEGF-α, MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression in colorectal cancer may be related to survival. These data add to the growing epidemiological and experimental evidence that VEGF-α, MMP-2 and MMP-9 may play a role in colorectal tumorigenesis.

RESUMO

Electroconductive bone grafts have been designed to control bone regeneration. Contrary to polymeric matrices, the translation of the carbon nanotube (CNT) electroconductivity into oxide ceramics is challenging due to the CNT oxidation during sintering. Sintering strategies involving reactive-bed pressureless sintering (RB + P) and hot-pressing (HP) were optimized towards prevention of CNT oxidation in glass/hydroxyapatite (HA) matrices. Both showed CNT retentions up to 80%, even at 1300 °C, yielding an increase of the electroconductivity in ten orders of magnitude relative to the matrix. The RB + P CNT compacts showed higher electroconductivity by ∼170% than the HP ones due to the lower damage to CNTs of the former route. Even so, highly reproducible conductivities with statistical variation below 5% and dense compacts up to 96% were only obtained by HP. The hot-pressed CNT compacts possessed no acute toxicity in a human osteoblastic cell line. A normal cellular adhesion and a marked orientation of the cell growth were observed over the CNT composites, with a proliferation/differentiation relationship favouring osteoblastic functional activity. These sintering strategies offer new insights into the sintering of electroconductive CNT containing bioactive ceramics with unlimited geometries for electrotherapy of the bone tissue.

Humoral response of vaccinated cattle against toxins of clostridium botulinum types C and D at different ages. Cattle humoral response against type C and D botulinum toxoids (indirect ELISA) was verified in animals of different ages. The animals (n = 90) were divided in three groups (n = 30): group one (G1): less than two years old; group two (G2): from 2 to 5 years old; group three (G3): more than 5 years old. The groups were vaccinated with two doses [0 and 42 days after primary vaccination (booster)] of bivalent (C and D) antibotulinum vaccine. Group three had higher antibody production (p ≤ 0.05) compared to the other groups, 30 days after the booster. There was no difference (G1 and G2; p ≥ 0.05) in the humoral response against C toxin, however, against D toxin, group one had higher antibody production. It was possible to conclude that after two doses of the commercial bivalent vaccine all groups produced a significant antibody response against botulinum toxins, especially against D type.

Flower therapy is currently considered an alternative medical practice used in several clinical situations, providing another way to prevent and cure many diseases of physical and emotional nature. This study aimed to investigate the effect of essences of the Brazilian Compound Flower System of Joel Aleixo in one same group of domestic cats showing suggestive clinical signs of Feline Respiratory Disease (FRD), treated in different moments (M0, M1, M2, M3). Twenty domestic cats, males and females, of mixed breed, with average age 5.63 ± 3.02, raised in the UFRPE's cattery, were used. The animals were orally treated with flower essences in two steps. Firstly with Total Desintus and Total Helminthus flower for 14 days and in the second step with Antibius and Regius for 28 days. The obtained results related to clinical aspects were a decrease in nasal and ocular discharge, and lung stertors; disappearance of clinical signal such as altered stool, ulcers in the oral cavity, bristling and hypertrophy of lymph nodes. Regarding hematological aspects, there was interference in the variables related to the blood (hemoglobin, MCV, MCHC, leucocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes). It can be concluded that flower therapy was effective in cats with signs suggestive of FRD raised under the same management conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence of occupational injuries among children and adolescents is not well known in Brazil. This study aims to identify occurrences and characteristics of occupational injuries in children and adolescents at the two major public emergency hospitals in Aracaju, Brazil. METHODS: In a cross sectional study, all children and adolescents (5-17 years) attending the services because of accidents of external cause in October-November 2006 and May-June 2007 were evaluated. The patients and their responsibles were interviewed to obtain information about the injury, family and patient characteristics and relation to work in the last 7 days. Data were analysed in number and percentages using descriptive statistics and chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS: There were 917 patients with injuries of external cause in the period studied. Seventy-one (8%) had worked in the last 7 days and in 40 (4%) the injury was related to work, with 2 (0.21%) deaths. Occupational injuries occurred more frequently in boys (95%); in the 14- to 17-year-old age group (77%); in agricultural (46%) and commercial activities (18%); to help with family budget (54%); without any safety training (73.5%) and not using personal protective equipment (94%). Main mechanisms of injuries were transportation incidents (42.5%) and contact with tools and equipment (27.5%). Injuries were mostly fractures (37.5%) and lacerations (22.5%). Upper extremities were injured in 49% of cases and the lower extremities in 26.5%. Comparison between the two groups (accident related or not related to labour) shows that there were significant differences for gender, age group, the main mechanism of injury and the part of the body injured, but not for the nature of injury. CONCLUSION: Working children and adolescents have been injured during their occupational activities and work-related injuries represent 4% of injuries of external causes in the emergency departments of Aracaju with 5% lethality.

RESUMO

Types C and D strains of Clostridium botulinum are commonly related to avian and mammalian botulism. Although there are numerous vaccine recommendations, little research has been conducted to indicate the real effectiveness of vaccine timing or the ideal immunization protocol for young beef calves. Four commercially available vaccines, two bivalent (Clostridium botulinum types C and D; vaccines 1 and 2) and two polyvalent (all Clostridium spp. including Clostridium botulinum types C and D; vaccines 3 and 4), that are currently used in Brazilian herds, were tested in order to verify the maternal immune response. One hundred cows, divided into four vaccinated groups and one unvaccinated group, were given a two-dose subcutaneous immunization, at day zero, followed by a second dose given at 42 days post-vaccination, which corresponded to 40 days before birth. Serum samples (n = 75) were collected only from healthy neonatal calves at 0, 7, 45 and 90 days post-calving (DPC) and subjected to indirect ELISA using the purified C and D holotoxins as capture antigens. The serological profile showed that all vaccines were able to induce a satisfactory neonatal immune response to both holotoxins at 7 DPC. However, at 45 and 90 DPC, a significant reduction (p < 0.05) was observed in the antibody level against C and D holotoxins in all tested vaccines. Neonatal immunization in calves is compromised by significant levels of maternal antibodies so that the necessity of planning a calf vaccination program involves assessment of disease risks at the production site. Finally, our findings represent the first demonstration of maternal immunity transferred to neonatal beef calves, including immunity levels after vaccination against Clostridium botulinum toxoids C and D.
