Much of the research from Canada's oil sands region (OSR) shows contaminants of concern (CoCs) throughout the ambient environment surrounding the industrial facilities. While there are some well-established sources of the CoCs, there is also spatial and temporal variability suggesting activity intensity, changes in technology, types and amounts of fuels combusted at the facilities, and climate may affect the results of deposition studies. This study re-analysed published data on the deposition of elements and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in snow and the sediments of some lakes by incorporating production data from facilities and climate. Using the Elastic Net (EN) regularized regression, variables describing potential associations between facility-specific activity and climate on the deposition of CoCs were identified. Among the selected variables, the combustion of delayed petroleum coke at the Suncor Basemine was associated with the deposition of CoCs, including elements in snow and in some lakes. Similarly, combustion of petroleum coke at Syncrude Mildred Lake was also identified in some models. In both cases, the effects of petroluem coke combustion are likely associated with the emission and deposition of fly ash. The mass of stored petroleum coke was not selected in snow CoC models, but the speed of the wind was a common driver for PACs. However, the mass of stockpiled petcoke was more closely associated with both elements and PACs in lake sediments. While the potential influence of other variables on the occurrence of CoCs in the OSR was also identified, including the production of crude bitumen and synthetic crude, the use of process and natural gases, temperature, and precipitation, these analyses support much of the earlier work and provides additional nuance. While more work is required, these results suggest facility-specific production and climatic data can be coupled with existing approaches to improve the identification of sources of CoCs in Canada's OSR and practices associated with their release.

Changes in ecosystems after the removal of stress provide a rich source of information for conservation science. We used a long-term regional data set on the performance of white sucker (Catostomus commersonii) collected before and after the closure of a pulp mill to explore recovery in fish. Physiological indicators, including liver enzymes and plasma steroids, showed some compelling changes after the closure of the mill consistent with reduced exposure to pulp mill effluent but did not unequivocally demonstrate recovery. However, persistent signals in these fish may indicate effects of impoundment or discharge of sewage. We also used quantile regression with environmental covariates and bootstrap iteration to determine if systematic variation remained in relative body weight, liver weight, and gonad weight. In fish formerly exposed to pulp mill effluent, we found evidence of improvements (male gonad weight and liver weight of males and females), degradation (gonad weight of females), and no change (body weight). Although the observed patterns may be associated with closure of the mill, some differences were also found at regional locations, suggesting roles of additional stressors and challenging the clear association of change at the Mattagami River exposure site with the closure of the mill. However, fish captured at this location show responses consistent with regional locations, suggesting no residual impacts and highlights the challenges of identifying changes in fish even after large and known interventions. Programs in Canada that assess the effects of wastewater discharges on organisms, such as Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM), primarily focus on fish populations and benthic invertebrate communities. Although these methods are widely accepted, there are many situations where fish monitoring is difficult and benthic community data is difficult to interpret; in these instances alternative approaches should be used. There are, however, few alternative methods available. One potential alternative is to use invertebrate population endpoints to determine effects in the receiving environment. In this study we examined effects of sewage and pulp mill effluents in the Saint John River, New Brunswick, on two stonefly genera (Plecoptera, Perlidae, Acroneuria spp. and Paragnetina spp.) and compared the responses to those of a small-bodied fish, the slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus). Stonefly measurements included condition, developmental stage, gonad weight, and size upstream and downstream of sewage and a pulp mill discharge. Condition, developmental stage, and absolute gonad weight were greater in Paragnetina spp. downstream of the sewage discharge. Acroneuria spp. showed persistence of the late developmental stage downstream of the sewage inputs. Slimy sculpin exposed to sewage effluents also showed increased condition, but the impacts downstream of the pulp mill effluent were inconsistent in both sculpin and Paragnetina spp. Our findings suggest that stonefly populations and slimy sculpin respond to effluents in similar ways and that the responses of large long-lived invertebrate populations, such as stoneflies, may be a viable alternative to fish population monitoring in environmental assessments of point source discharges.
