RESUMO

A healthy lifestyle comprising regular physical activity and an adequate diet is imperative for the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and some cancers. Advances in information computer technology offer the opportunity to provide personalised lifestyle advice directly to the individual through devices such as smartphones or tablets. The overall aim of the PROTEIN project (Wilson-Barnes et al., 2021) was to develop a smartphone application that could provide tailored and dynamic nutrition and physical activity advice directly to the individual in real time. However, to create this mobile health (m-health) smartphone application, a knowledge base of reference ranges for macro-/micronutrient intake, anthropometry, biochemical, physiological and sleep parameters was required to underpin the parameters of the recommender systems. Therefore, the principal aim of this emerging research paper is to describe the process by which experts in nutrition and physiology from the PROTEIN consortium collaborated to develop the nutritional and physical activity requirements, based upon existing recommendations, for 10 separate population groups living within the EU including, but not limited to healthy adults, adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, excess weight, obesity and iron deficiency anaemia. A secondary aim is to describe the development of a library of 24-h meal plans appropriate for the same groups and also encompassing various dietary preferences and allergies. Overall, the consortium devised an extensive nutrition and physical activity knowledge base that is pertinent to 10 separate EU user groups, is available in 7 different languages and is practically implemented via a library of culturally appropriate, 24-h meal plans.

RESUMO

The purpose of the study was the determination of prevalence of chronic bronchitis in people older than 55 years in rural and industrial areas. 569 people over 55 years old living in central Greece were studied. A protocol was completed for each patient that included smoking habits, job, age, weight, drugs used for respiratory system and symptoms. A chest radiograph was taken for each patient. Each patient was submitted to three trials of dynamic spirometry. The best results were used for the study. The patients who complained of expectoration for three months for two continuous years and had obstructive pattern of lung function were diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. 9.6% of the subjects in rural area and 17.1% in industrial area were diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. Half the COPD patients never visited a doctor for this specific problem and were diagnosed for the first time. One out of three examined people had abnormal lung function. Consequently, more than one out of ten people older than 55 years have chronic bronchitis. Industrial exposure seems to double the risk for chronic bronchitis.

RESUMO

The maturing of telecommunication technologies has ushered in a whole new era of applications and services in the health care environment. Teleworking, teleconsultation, mutlimedia conferencing and medical data distribution are rapidly becoming commonplace in clinical practice. As a result, a set of problems arises, concerning data confidentiality and integrity. Public computer networks, such as the emerging ISDN technology, are vulnerable to eavesdropping. Therefore it is important for telemedicine applications to employ end-to-end encryption mechanisms securing the data channel from unauthorized access of modification. We propose a network access and encryption system that is both economical and easily implemented for integration in developing or existing applications, using well-known and thoroughly tested encryption algorithms. Public-key cryptography is used for session-key exchange, while symmetric algorithms are used for bulk encryption. Mechanisms for session-key generation and exchange are also provided.
