RESUMO

The subwavelength confinement of light energy in the nanogaps formed between adjacent plasmonic nanostructures provides the foundational basis for nanophotonic applications. Within this realm, air-filled nanogaps are of central importance because they present a cavity where application-specific nanoscale objects can reside. When forming such configurations on substrate surfaces, there is an inherent difficulty in that the most technologically relevant nanogap widths require closely spaced nanostructures separated by distances that are inaccessible through standard electron-beam lithography techniques. Herein, we demonstrate an assembly route for the fabrication of aligned plasmonic gold trimers with air-filled vertical nanogaps having widths that are defined with spatial controls that exceed those of lithographic processes. The devised procedure uses a sacrificial oxide layer to define the nanogap, a glancing angle deposition to impose a directionality on trimer formation, and a sacrificial antimony layer whose sublimation regulates the gold assembly process. By further implementing a benchtop nanoimprint lithography process and a glancing angle ion milling procedure as additional controls over the assembly, it is possible to deterministically position trimers in periodic arrays and extend the assembly process to dimer formation. The optical response of the structures, which is characterized using polarization-dependent spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and refractive index sensitivity measurements, shows properties that are consistent with simulation. This work, hence, forwards the wafer-based processing techniques needed to form air-filled nanogaps and place plasmonic energy at site-specific locations.

Micro- and nanoscale ZnO tetrapods provide an attractive support for metallic nanostructures since they can be inexpensively produced using the flame transport method and nanoparticle synthesis schemes can take advantage of a coupled response facilitated by the formation of a semiconductor-metal interface. Here, we present a light-mediated solution-based growth mode capable of decorating the surface of ZnO tetrapods with nanostructures of gold, silver, copper, platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, and rhodium. It involves two coupled reactions that are driven by the optical excitation of electron-hole pairs in the ZnO semiconductor by ultraviolet photons where the excited electrons are used to reduce aqueous metal ions onto the ZnO tetrapod as excited holes are scavenged from the surface. For the most part, the growth mode gives rise to nanoparticles with a roundish morphology that are uniformly distributed on the tetrapod surface. Larger structures with irregular shapes are, however, obtained for syntheses utilizing aqueous metal nitrates as opposed to chlorides, a result that suggests that the anion plays a role in shape determination. It is also demonstrated that changes to the molarity of the metal ion can influence the nanostructure nucleation rate. The catalytic activity of tetrapods decorated with each of the eight metals is assessed using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by borohydride as a model reaction where it is shown that those decorated with Pd, Ag, and Rh are the most active.

Five experiments compared preschool children's performance to that of adults and of non-human animals on match to sample tasks involving 2-item or 16-item arrays that varied according to their composition of same or different items (Array Match-to-Sample, AMTS). They establish that, like non-human animals in most studies, 3- and 4-year-olds fail 2-item AMTS (the classic relational match to sample task introduced into the literature by Premack, 1983), and that robust success is not observed until age 6. They also establish that 3-year-olds, like non-human animal species, succeed only when they are able to encode stimuli in terms of entropy, a property of an array (namely its internal variability), rather than relations among the individuals in the array (same vs. different), whereas adults solve both 2-item and 16-item AMTS on the basis of the relations same and different. As in the case of non-human animals, the acuity of 3- and 4-year-olds' representation of entropy is insufficient to solve the 2-item same-different AMTS task. At age 4, behavior begins to contrast with that of non-human species. On 16-item AMTS, a subgroup of 4-year-olds induce a categorical rule matching all-same arrays to all-same arrays, while matching other arrays (mixed arrays of same and different items) to all-different arrays. These children tend to justify their choices using the words "same" and "different." By age 4 a number of our participants succeed at 2-item AMTS, also justifying their choices by explicit verbal appeals using words for same and different. Taken together these results suggest that the recruitment of the relational representations corresponding to the meaning of these words contributes to the better performance over the preschool years at solving array match-to-sample tasks.

The pharmacokinetics of tacrolimus are influenced by many factors, including genetic variability, acute infections, liver dysfunction, and interacting medications, which can result in elevated concentrations. The most appropriate management of acute tacrolimus toxicity has not been defined though case reports exist describing the therapeutic use of enzyme inducers to increase tacrolimus metabolism and decrease concentrations. We are reporting on the utilization of phenytoin to assist in decreasing tacrolimus concentrations in a case series of four solid organ transplant recipients with acute, symptomatic tacrolimus toxicity presenting with elevated serum creatinine, potassium, and tacrolimus trough concentrations greater than 30 ng/mL. All four patients had the potential causative agents stopped or temporarily held and were given 300 to 400 mg/day of phenytoin for two to three days. Within three days of beginning phenytoin, all four patients had a decrease in tacrolimus concentration to less than 15 ng/mL, a return to or near baseline creatinine concentration, and lack of phenytoin-related side effects. Therefore, phenytoin appears to be a safe and potentially beneficial treatment option in patients with symptomatic tacrolimus toxicity.

Although working memory has a highly constrained capacity limit of three or four items, both adults and toddlers can increase the total amount of stored information by "chunking" object representations in memory. To examine the developmental origins of chunking, we used a violation-of-expectation procedure to ask whether 7-month-old infants, whose working memory capacity is still maturing, also can chunk items in memory. In Experiment 1, we found that in the absence of chunking cues, infants failed to remember three identical hidden objects. In Experiments 2 and 3, we found that infants successfully remembered three hidden objects when provided with overlapping spatial and featural chunking cues. In Experiment 4, we found that infants did not chunk when provided with either spatial or featural chunking cues alone. Finally, in Experiment 5, we found that infants also failed to chunk when spatial and featural cues specified different chunks (i.e., were pitted against each other). Taken together, these results suggest that chunking is available before working memory capacity has matured but still may undergo important development over the first year of life.

CONTEXT: Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) has been recommended by the American Diabetes Association for the diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes. The diagnostic utility of A1C has not been evaluated in Arabs, a population at increased risk for developing diabetes. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine the sensitivity and specificity of A1C for the diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes in Arabs. DESIGN & SETTING: In this cross-sectional study, glucose tolerance was classified by the American Diabetes Association diagnostic criteria specified for A1C, fasting plasma glucose, and 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. PARTICIPANTS: A population-based representative sample of 482 randomly selected adult Arabs without known diabetes was studied. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of A1C diagnostic cutpoints for diabetes and prediabetes were calculated. κ Coefficients were used to test for agreement between A1C categorization and glucose-based diagnoses. RESULTS: A1C testing correctly identified 5% of individuals diagnosed with diabetes by oral glucose tolerance test, 13% by fasting plasma glucose, and 41% by both criteria. A1C alone identified 14% of individuals diagnosed with impaired glucose tolerance, 9% with impaired fasting glucose, and 33% with both abnormalities. Sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve were 19% (16-23%), 100% (99-100%), and 77% (69-85%) for diabetes A1C cutpoint and 14% (11-17%), 91% (89-94%), and 57% (52-62%) for prediabetes A1C range. A1C cutpoint of 6.2% for diabetes and 5.1% for prediabetes yielded the highest accuracy but still missed 73% of those with diabetes and 31% with prediabetes. Agreement between A1C and diabetes (κ = 0.2835) or prediabetes (κ = 0.0530) was low. CONCLUSIONS: A1C-based criteria yield a high proportion of false-negative tests for diabetes and prediabetes in Arabs. SUMMARY: Racial/ethnic differences in A1C performance for diagnosis and prediction of diabetes exist. This paper examines its utility against glucose measurements in an at-risk Arab population.

A study was conducted to determine the spray deposition patterns for air blast sprayers used to apply chemicals to the canopy of Semillon grapevine in vineyard. The application carried out in 12 bars and three sprayer speed (2.1-4.9-7.7 km h(-1)). The spray deposition was measured on the point in the different distances (1.5-3-6-9 m). Tartrazine were applied as tracer material. Maximum spray deposit was obtained 66.1 mg cm(-2) at sprayer speed of 2.1 km h(-1) and minimum deposit was obtained 37.1 mg cm(-2) at sprayer speed of 7.7 km h(-1). The results showed that the sprayer speeds had significant effect on spray deposit distribution and increasing of the sprayer speed increased drift.
