RESUMO

(1) Background: Winter grazing of livestock poses significant environmental risks of nitrogen (N) leaching and sediment runoff. (2) Methods: A field study tested the effects of sowing catch crops of oats (Avena sativa L.), ryecorn (Secale cereale L.) or triticale (Triticosecale) in June and August (winter) in Southland, New Zealand (NZ), on the risk of N leaching losses from simulated N loads left after winter forage grazing. (3) Results: Catch crops took up 141-191 kg N ha-1 by green-chop silage maturity (approximately Zadoks growth stage 52; November/December). Importantly, early-sown catch crops were able to capture more N during the key leaching period from winter to mid-spring (77-106 kg N ha-1 cf. 27-31 kg N ha-1 for June and August treatments, respectively). At this time, ryecorn and triticale crops sown in June captured 20-29 kg ha-1 more N than June-sown oats (77 kg N ha-1). In October, early-sown catch crops reduced mineral N in the soil profile (0-45 cm depth) by 69-141 kg N ha-1 through the process of plant uptake. At green-chop silage maturity, catch crop yields ranged from 6.6 to 14.6 t DM ha-1. Highest yields and crop quality profiles (e.g., metabolizable energy, crude protein, soluble sugars and starch) were achieved by the oats, irrespective of the sowing date, indicating that trade-offs likely exist between environmental and productive performances of the catch crop species tested. (4) Conclusion: The catch crop of choice by farmers will depend on the desired end use for the crop, its place in the crop rotation and its potential for an environmental benefit.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To study the characteristics of second treated eyes in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with ranibizumab in the United Kingdom National Health Service. DESIGN: Multicenter national nAMD database study. PARTICIPANTS: Twelve thousand nine hundred fifty-one treatment-naïve eyes of 11,135 patients receiving 92,976 ranibizumab injections. METHODS: Up to 5 years of routinely collected, anonymized data within electronic medical record systems were extracted remotely from 14 centers. Participating centers exclusively used ranibizumab to treat nAMD (loading phase of 3 monthly injections followed by monthly visits and pro re nata re-treatment). The minimum data set included: age, logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) visual acuity (VA) at baseline and at all subsequent visits, and injection episodes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Baseline, change and actual VA over 3 years, and number of treatments and clinic visits. RESULTS: During the study, 1816 (16.3%) of the 11 135 patients received treatment to the fellow eye. Mean baseline and final VA were 0.66 (standard deviation, 0.32) and 0.65 (0.40) for first treated eyes and 0.41 (0.34) and 0.56 (0.40) for second treated eyes. The rate of VA loss after the loading phase was similar in first and second treated eyes (0.03 and 0.05 logMAR units/year). When fellow eyes with baseline VA worse than 20/200 were excluded to restrict analyses to eyes at risk of nAMD, the rate of second-eye involvement was 14.0% per year (42%/3 years). Mean number of injections/visits in years 1, 2, and 3 were similar for first and second treated eyes (5.6/8.2, 3.9/8.0, 3.8/8.2 and 5.5/8.7, 3.6/9.4, and 3.8/9.1, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Second treated eyes with nAMD commence treatment with better baseline VA, do not show significant vision gain but maintain better VA than first treated eyes at all time points for at least 3 years, making them the more important eye functionally. These data highlight the high burden of second eye involvement, with almost half of all eyes at risk requiring bilateral treatment by 3 years, and the need for regular monitoring of fellow eyes for best visual outcomes which theoretically may reduce the benefits of extended monitoring regimens.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report a case of open globe injury caused by eyelash curlers. METHODS: Interventional case report. RESULTS: A 19-year-old female presented with a history of accidentally poking herself in the left eye when her eyelash curlers broke suddenly. Initial assessment revealed a laceration in the infero-nasal cornea of the left eye. The patient was also noted to have developed a traumatic cataract. Surgical exploration of the penetrating eye injury also revealed damage to the posterior capsule of the lens. Lensectomy, anterior vitrectomy, and implantation of an intraocular lens were performed. The first day after the operation, the patient's visual acuity in the left eye improved to 20/30 unaided. At 3-months follow-up, the sutures were removed and visual acuity remains at 20/30 unaided. CONCLUSION: Our case represents an unusual cause of serious ocular injury in a domestic setting wherein appropriate and timely intervention resulted in a good clinical outcome.

RESUMO

A case is reported of a 68-year-old patient who had undergone uneventful cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation. She reported the perception of a binocular cross simulating that seen with Bagolini striated glasses, especially with streetlights at night. It is suggested that this phenomenon was caused by posterior capsular folds.

RESUMO

In 1991, 1992, and 1994, 2,936 accessions of Pisum sativum from the USDA Plant Introduction collection were screened under field conditions for resistance to Mycosphaerella pinodes without replication due to seed supply. These trials were conducted at the Oak Park Research Station at Carlow, Ireland, where conditions are highly favorable for disease expression. In 1995, the 157 most resistant accessions were again screened at Carlow and at the Food and Crops Research Station at Gore, New Zealand, in replicated trials. At both locations, disease was severe and ranged from 20 to 100% foliar blight. Five accessions were as resistant as the commercial cultivar Radley at both locations: PI 142441, PI 142442, PI 381132, PI 404221, and PI 413691. No accessions were more resistant than the cultivar Radley.
