RESUMO

Nanoparticles derived from plant viruses play an important role in nanomedicine due to their biocompatibility, self-assembly and easily-modifiable surface. In this study, we developed a novel platform for increasing antibody sensing using viral nanoparticles derived from turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) functionalized with SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) through three different methods: chemical conjugation, gene fusion and the SpyTag/SpyCatcher technology. Even though gene fusion turned out to be unsuccessful, the other two constructs were proven to significantly increase antibody sensing when tested with saliva of patients with different infection and vaccination status to SARS-CoV-2. Our findings show the high potential of TuMV nanoparticles in the fields of diagnostics and immunodetection, being especially attractive for the development of novel antibody sensing devices.

RESUMO

The circular economy (CE) has been gaining traction in recent years as it promises a change for good, in terms of environmental, social, and economic benefits. The major changes required to implement circular economy business models (CEBMs), can prove to be especially difficult for organisations. This study provides a holistic analysis of the effect of CE institutional policies on the development of CEBMs in organisations, by exploring not only production-oriented policies, which have been the focus of previous research, but also consumption policies. Consumption policies, in the form of regulatory and information policies, are oriented towards consumers and have the potential to affect the demand for CE products, which in turn affects the development of CEBMs in organisations. The paper is framed within the institutional theory and the context of the European Union. Our results reveal that consumption policies have a positive, albeit diminishing, effect on the CEBMs. Our paper finds that regulation is the most impactful policy, having a larger impact than production policies. Our results highlight the important role of institutional policies in fostering consumers' demand for CE products and of consumption policies as tools to be employed by governments in fostering CEBMs and achieving sustainability.

RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of different lymphatic pathways on surgical planning and the reliability of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy to predict regional recurrence in patients with clinically N0 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS: Twenty-five patients with cT1/T2 N0 OSCC underwent a lymphoscintigraphy and an SLN biopsy. Elective neck dissection was performed at the validation stage and in patients with metastatic SLN. Scintigraphic and surgical SLN detection, pathologic status of SLN and of elective neck dissection, and regional recurrence in patients with negative SLN (pN0(sn)) were all analyzed. RESULTS: Scintigraphic and surgical detection were 96% and 100%, respectively, with 68% of negative SLN. Lymphoscintigraphy modified surgery in 32% of patients. In pN0(sn) patients, the free-of-disease survival rate was 88%. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the reliability of sentinel node biopsy in OSCC. Presurgical lymphoscintigraphy is essential, because it can modify the surgical procedure.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: A simple technique is described for alveolar reconstruction in cases where resorption has already occurred. The palatal core graft allows immediate regeneration of vertical, horizontal, and combined defects at the alveolus with minimal donor site morbidity and time consumption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients (10 female and 7 male) were treated over a 1-year period. Bone core grafts from the palatal vault were harvested with a trephine and used for alveolar reconstruction in the esthetic zone. Patient age and gender, type and location of the defect, size of the graft, simultaneous tooth removal, simultaneous implant placement, need for soft tissue coverage, and postoperative complications were recorded. RESULTS: Mean length of the grafts was 12.5 mm (range 9 to 14 mm). Mean width was 7.3 mm (range 5 to 9 mm). In 11 cases, simultaneous tooth removal was performed and a connective tissue flap with posterior pedicles was used. Patients did not experience discomfort in the donor area. Sixteen cases were successfully restored with single implants and crowns DISCUSSION: Material for osseous reconstruction should ideally be autologous and easy to harvest and provoke minimal morbidity. The palatal core graft compares favorably with previously described techniques and donor sites for alveolar reconstruction. CONCLUSION: In this preliminary report, experience with a new technique for alveolar reconstruction is presented. The "palatal core graft" for alveolar reconstruction is effective and easy to harvest and has low donor site morbidity, allowing 3-dimensional restoration of alveolar defects.
