RESUMO

Dessert organisms like sandfish lizards (SLs) bend and generate thrust in granular mediums to scape heat and hunt for prey [1]. Further, SLs seems to have striking capabilities to swim in undulatory form keeping the same wavelength even in terrains with different volumetric densities, hence behaving as rigid bodies. This paper tries to recommend new research directions for planetary robotics, adapting principles of sand swimmers for improving robustness of surface exploration robots. First, we summarize previous efforts on bio-inspired hardware developed for granular terrains and accessing complex geological features. Later, a rigid wheel design has been proposed to imitate SLs locomotion capabilities. In order to derive the force models to predict performance of such bio-inspired mobility system, different approaches as RFT (Resistive Force Theory) and analytical terramechanics are introduced. Even in typical wheeled robots the slip and sinkage increase with time, the new design intends to imitate traversability capabilities of SLs, that seem to keep the same slip while displacing at subsurface levels.

RESUMO

We previously showed that vitamin A supplementation in early life impacts white adipose tissue (WAT) biology. We here studied the vitamin's effects on DNA methylation of genes crucial for WAT cell development, determination and metabolism. CpG promoter methylation and mRNA expression of Pparg, Zfp423, Pcna, and Rbp4 was compared in inguinal WAT of 21-day-old rats supplemented during the suckling period with vehicle (controls) or an emulsion of vitamin A as retinyl ester (RE) or ß-carotene (BC). The methylation profile of promoters was affected by vitamin A supplementation with pronounced differences between the RE and BC groups. In the RE group, hypermethylation of the Rbp4 (at multiple CpGs) and the Pparg2 (at a specific CpG) promoters and hypomethylation of the Pcna promoter (at multiple CpGs) was observed, together with inverse changes in gene expression levels. In the BC group, hypomethylation of the Rbp4 and hypermethylation of the Pcna promoter at distinct CpGs was observed, with no effects on gene expression. In both supplemention groups, hypomethylation and increased expression was found for Zfp423. Thus, modest vitamin A supplementation in early postnatal life impacts methylation marks in developing WAT. Differential epigenetic effects of RE and BC in early life may affect adipose tissue programming activity.

RESUMO

Previously, we demonstrated that when Ustilago maydis (DC) Cda., a phytopathogenic basidiomycete and the causal agent of corn smut, is grown in the vicinity of maize embryogenic calli in a medium supplemented with the herbicide Dicamba, it developed gastroid-like basidiocarps. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in the basidiocarp development by the fungus, we proceeded to analyze the transcriptome of the process, identifying a total of 2002 and 1064 differentially expressed genes at two developmental stages, young and mature basidiocarps, respectively. Function of these genes was analyzed with the use of different databases. MIPS analysis revealed that in the stage of young basidiocarp, among the ca. two thousand differentially expressed genes, there were some previously described for basidiocarp development in other fungal species. Additional elements that operated at this stage included, among others, genes encoding the transcription factors FOXO3, MIG3, PRO1, TEC1, copper and MFS transporters, and cytochromes P450. During mature basidiocarp development, important up-regulated genes included those encoding hydrophobins, laccases, and ferric reductase (FRE/NOX). The demonstration that a mapkk mutant was unable to form basidiocarps, indicated the importance of the MAPK signaling pathway in this developmental process.

RESUMO

We report the clinical and serological studies in patients who underwent pericardiotomy. Seventy three per cent of them developed antisarcolemma antibodies 4 weeks after surgery, and a third of them also had antimitochondrial antibodies. However, clinical post-pericardiotomy syndrome was rare; only 7% of the patients fulfilled the criteria for this diagnosis. Although immune responses against tissue antigens are frequent as a consequence of surgical trauma, the clinical manifestations are rare.
