RESUMO

COVID-19 is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by SARS-COV 2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) that has become a global pandemic. COVID-19 mainly causes the respiratory complications of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), cytokine storm, and severe immune disruptions. The assays depict that though people recuperate from COVID-19, there are still symptoms that persists in the body causing discomfort, which is the consequence of the viral infection due to severe immune disruptions. Upon various difficulties of post COVID-19, the pulmonary fibrosis is the stumbling block in the lungs causing severe damage. In this review, we have shown the effectiveness and importance of the Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) secreted by Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) therapy on selective stoppage of the Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (TGF-ß) signalling pathway by causing immunomodulatory effects that ameliorate the pulmonary fibrosis through paracrine signalling. However, more pilot studies have to be carried out to determine the efficacy and outcomes of the re-emerging complication.

RESUMO

Cell-surface receptors are the inviters of many potent pathogens that can adjust to any kind of circumstance for their existence. Many of these organisms are highly resistant to the currently existing drugs and mutate to new strains with high levels of pathogenesis, posing life-threatening consequences. Owing to such concerns, antiviral strategies are being assessed based on host cell receptor targeting. Many natural compounds with a tendency to strip off the cell surface receptors are under evaluation. Compounds that are non-toxic, patient friendly, and yield a quick output are essential for the current scenario. Drugs targeting the cell surface receptors should, therefore, be developed and standardized for the effective management of SARS-CoV-2 viral infection.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose. COVID-19 is predominantly considered as an unavoidable pandemic, and scientists are very curious about how to provide the best protection to the public before a vaccine can be made available. There is an urge to manufacture a greater number of masks to prevent any aerosol with microbes. Hence, we aim to develop an efficient viral inactivation system by exploiting active compounds from naturally occurring medicinal plants and infusing them into nanofiber-based respiratory masks. Our strategy is to develop fibrous filtration with three-layered masks using the compounds from medicinal plants for viral deactivation. These masks will be beneficial not just to healthcare workers but common citizens as well. In the absence of vaccination, productive masks can be worn to prevent transmission of airborne pathogenic aerosols and control diseases.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Mosquitoes are vectors of several important vector-borne diseases (VBDs) like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis (JE) and lymphatic filariasis (LF). Globally, these VBDs are of major public health concern including India. The information on vector mosquitoes from Thiruvarur district in Tamil Nadu state remains largely either unknown or undocumented. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to find out the seasonal variation in mosquitoes with special reference to dengue vectors in rural areas of Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, India. METHODS: Surveillance of immature vector mosquitoes was undertaken from March 2018 to February 2019. The emerged adults were identified to find out the composition of mosquito species prevalent in the district. The seasonal variations of the mosquitoes especially dengue vectors were analysed for summer (March-July) spring (August-November) and winter (December-February) seasons in all the blocks of Thiruvarur district. RESULTS: A total of 4879 mosquitoes emerged from the immature collection and the species identification revealed the prevalence of both vector and non-vector species. Five important mosquito vectors collected were -Aedes albopictus, Ae. aegypti, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. gelidus, and Cx. quinquefasciatus. Other mosquito species collected were Lutzia fuscana, Anopheles barbirostris, An. subpictus, and Armigeres (Armigeres) subalbatus. During the spring season, the dengue vectors showed high indices of breateau index (BI), ranging from 16 to 120; besides, container index (CI) ranging from14.29 to 68.57 and pupal index (PI) from 53.33 to 295 among the study blocks. The major breeding sites were discarded plastic containers, discarded tyres, open sintex tanks (water storage tanks), cement tanks, discarded fibre box, pleated plastic sheets, tree holes, bamboo cut stumps, coconut spathe, and coconut shells. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The immature vector surveillance revealed seasonal variations in the entomological indices of Aedes breeding potential. The high indices observed indicate high Aedes breeding density and, therefore, a higher risk for dengue/chikungunya outbreaks in rural areas of Thiruvarur district. The present finding warrants intensive surveillance and follow up vector control measures to avert outbreaks and prevent vector-borne diseases. Health education and the community participation in awareness camps prior to monsoon and societal commitment will help in strengthening source reduction, anti-larval operations and anti-adult measures to tackle vector-borne diseases especially dengue.

Perceiving abnormal regions in the images of different medical modalities plays a crucial role in diagnosis and subsequent treatment planning. In medical images to visually perceive abnormalities' extent and boundaries requires substantial experience. Consequently, manually drawn region of interest (ROI) to outline boundaries of abnormalities suffers from limitations of human perception leading to inter-observer variability. As an alternative to human drawn ROI, it is proposed the use of a computer-based segmentation algorithm to segment digital medical image data.Hierarchical Clustering-based Segmentation (HCS) process is a generic unsupervised segmentation process that can be used to segment dissimilar regions in digital images. HCS process generates a hierarchy of segmented images by partitioning an image into its constituent regions at hierarchical levels of allowable dissimilarity between its different regions. The hierarchy represents the continuous merging of similar, spatially adjacent, and/or disjoint regions as the allowable threshold value of dissimilarity between regions, for merging, is gradually increased.This chapter discusses in detail first the implementation of the HCS process, second the implementation details of how the HCS process is used for the presentation of multi-modal imaging data (MALDI and MRI) of a biological sample, third the implementation details of how the process is used as a perception aid for X-ray mammogram readers, and finally the implementation details of how it is used as an interpretation aid for the interpretation of Multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) of the Prostate.

RESUMO

CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by using a precipitation method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, X-ray diffraction patterns, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy spectra, and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy spectra showed that the formed samples were CeO2 polycrystalline nanoparticles. Inverted organic solar cells with a structure of indium-tin-oxide/CeO2/poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):[6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)/MoO3/Ag were fabricated. Current density-voltage results showed that the power conversion efficiency of the device of the fabricated inverted OPV cells with a CeO2 interlayer between the P3HT:PCBM and the cathode was 0.39% larger than that without a CeO2 interlayer.

RESUMO

A 38-year-old man with an underlying psychiatric illness presented with altered sensorium and abnormal behaviour. He was febrile at 38°C and weak looking; otherwise no other abnormalities were detected. A blood film conducted for malarial parasite (BFMP) revealed Plasmodium falciparum; hence a diagnosis of cerebral malaria was made. He was treated with antimalarial drugs for 2 days prior to being transferred out to the ward following clinical improvement. He subsequently developed episodes of stupor and refusal of feeding. Following an evaluation by the psychiatrist, a diagnosis of catatonic schizophrenia was made and he was started on oral sulpiride and benhexol. Unfortunately, he developed high-grade fever at 40°C with muscle rigidity and fasciculation. The diagnosis of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) was clinched and the antipsychotics were discontinued. However he succumbed to NMS several days later due to multiorgan failure.

Methanol extracts of Pelargonium citrosa leaf were tested for their biological, larvicidal, pupicidal, adulticidal, antiovipositional activity, repellency and biting deterrency against Anopheles stephensi. Larval mortality was dose dependent with the highest dose of 4% plant extract evoking 98% mortality. The extracts affected pupicidal and adulticidal activity and significantly decreased fecundity and longevity of A. stephensi. The larval, pupal and adult development were completely inhibited by the treatment. At 4% the extracts evoked strong repellent action. They also interfered with oviposition, egg hatchability, and exhibited a growth inhibiting effect against larvae and good repellency against adults of A. stephensi. The leaf extract treatment significantly enhanced biting deterrency. As naturally occurring insecticides, these plant derived materials could be useful as an alternative for synthetic insecticides controlling field populations of mosquitoes.
