RESUMO

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood. This study investigates the quality of life (QoL) of parents of children with ADHD, the discrimination they encounter, and their sources of information about the disorder. This cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire through Google Forms from March to April 2023. Study participants were recruited using a convenient sampling technique from patient records in 4 regions of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was sent through commonly used social media. QoL was assessed through the validated Arabic version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument, Short Form questionnaire. A total of 100 participants were recruited for this study. Most of the participants were from the southern region (80%, n = 80), 66.0% (n = 66) were mothers, 66.0% (n = 66) were married and 64% (n = 64) had a college degree. The mean scores of the physical, psychological, mental, environmental, total scales, and general QoL were (57.18 ±â€…13.67, 62.58 ±â€…17.49, 63.33 ±â€…23.12, 23.07 ±â€…12.87, 51.54 ±â€…14.34, 3.69 ±â€…1.06, respectively). Half of the population studied experienced discrimination with no significant differences between mothers and fathers (64% vs 68%, P = .833). The main source of information on ADHD was the Internet (49%) followed by schools (11%), and relatives (10%). Fifty-four percent of the participants have participated in workshops or seminars on neurodevelopmental disorders and 39.0% believed that schools and institutions are sufficiently equipped to support children with ADHD. ADHD had a profound impact on the QoL of parents, with a substantial portion facing discrimination due to their child condition. Additionally, parents showed a strong desire to acquire more information about ADHD, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding and support surrounding this condition.

RESUMO

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable biopolymers produced by prokaryotic microbes, which, at the same time, can be applied as single-cell proteins (SCPs), growing on renewable waste-derived substrates. These PHA polymers have gained increasing attention as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. One promising application of PHA and PHA-rich SCPs lies within the aquaculture food industry, where they hold potential as feed additives, biocontrol agents against diseases, and immunostimulants. Nevertheless, the cost of PHA production and application remains high, partly due to expensive substrates for cultivating PHA-accumulating SCPs, costly sterilization, energy-intensive SCPs harvesting techniques, and toxic PHA extraction and purification processes. This review summarizes the current state of PHA production and its application in aquaculture. The structure and classification of PHA, microbial sources, cultivation substrates, biosynthesis pathways, and the production challenges and solutions are discussed. Next, the potential of PHA application in aquaculture is explored, focusing on aquaculture challenges, common and innovative PHA-integrated farming practices, and PHA mechanisms in inhibiting pathogens, enhancing the immune system, and improving growth and gut health of various aquatic species. Finally, challenges and future research needs for PHA production and application in aquaculture are identified. Overall, this review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the potential of PHA in aquaculture and highlights the need for further research in this area.

RESUMO

Background: Corticosteroids have been used since the 50s and it represent the most important and frequently used class of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs for the treatment of several diseases such as numerous neoplastic, asthma, allergy, rheumatoid arthritis, and dermatological disorders. This study aims to determine the public awareness of side effects of systemic steroids in Asir region, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional web-based study was used. An online questionnaire was developed by the study researchers based on the literature review and consultations of the field experts. The questionnaire included the following components: Participants demographic data, medical history, and steroids use. Also, it covered participants awareness regarding systemic steroids and side effects. Results: A total of 439 participants fulfilling the inclusion criteria completed the study questionnaire. Ages ranged from 18 to 65 years with mean age of 26.1 ± 13.9 years old, of those, 227 (51.7%) respondents were males. Around 346 (78.8%) had poor overall awareness level while only 93 (21.2%) had good awareness regarding systematic steroids. The study also showed that awareness was significantly higher among young aged participants in the health care field and among those who previously used steroids. Two hundred and eighty two (64.2%) of the respondents reported previous use of steroids. Conclusion: In conclusion, the current study showed that nearly one out of each five people know about systemic steroids and related side effects which is below the satisfactory level. Higher awareness was observed with regards drug associated side effects and long-term use consequences.

RESUMO

Different concentrations of titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) have been frequently reported in treated wastewater used for the irrigation of crops. Luteolin is a susceptive anticancer flavonoid in many crops and rare medicinal plants that can be affected by exposure to TiO2NPs. This study investigates the potential transformation of pure luteolin in exposure to TiO2NP-containing water. In an in vitro system, three replicates of 5 mg L-1 of pure luteolin were exposed to TiO2NPs (0, 25, 50, 100 ppm). After 48 h exposure, the samples were extensively analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). A positive correlation was found between TiO2NPs concentrations and the structural alteration of luteolin content, where over 20% of luteolin structure was allegedly altered in the presence of 100 ppm TiO2NPs. The increase of NPs diameter (∼70 nm) and dominant peaks in Raman spectra revealed that luteolin was adsorbed onto the TiO2NPs surface. Further, the second-order derivative analysis confirmed the transformation of luteolin upon exposure to TiO2NPs. This study provides fundamental insight into agricultural safety measures when exposed to air or water-borne TiO2NPs.

RESUMO

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by altered bowel habits, abdominal pain, or discomfort. It is a highly prevalent disorder that affects patients' quality of life. A workup is usually required to diagnose IBS, as its differential diagnosis includes some serious conditions such as carcinoma of the colon. The present study aimed to assess the awareness and beliefs of the general population regarding IBS. This study was conducted in the Aseer Region, in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia. It followed a cross-sectional research design that was conducted during the period from January to March 2021 using a structured self-administered questionnaire to assess the demographic variables in addition to questions to assess participants' awareness and beliefs related to IBS. Following a convenience sample, the study included 779 participants, with 43.3% being male, mostly in the age group 21-30 years (36.7%), and 68.7% being university graduates. Most participants (70.5%) were aware of IBS, and had the correct knowledge about its etiology, symptoms, risk factors, prognosis, and management. It is recommended to conduct various awareness-raising programs regarding IBS to improve the public's knowledge and to decrease functional disabilities and their impact on life.

RESUMO

Recovering and converting carbon and nutrients from waste streams into healthy single-cell proteins (SCPs) can be an effective strategy to address costly waste management and support the increasing animal feed demand for the global food supply. Recently, SCPs rich in polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) have been identified as an effective biocontrol healthy feed to replace conventional antibiotics-supplemented aquaculture feed. PHB, an intercellular polymer of short-chain-length (SCL) hydroxy-fatty acids, is a common type of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) that can be microbially produced from various organics, including agro-industrial wastes. The complex chemical properties of agro-industrial wastes might produce SCPs containing PHA with SCL and/or medium chain-length (MCL) hydroxy-fatty acids. However, the effects of MCL-PHA-containing SCPs on aqua species' health and disease-fighting ability remains poorly understood. This study investigated the feasibility of producing various PHA-containing SCPs from renewable agro-industrial wastes/wastewaters, the effectiveness of SCL- and MCL-PHA as biocontrol agents, and the effects of these PHA-rich SCPs on the growth and disease resistance of an aquaculture animal model, brine shrimp Artemia. Zobellella denitrificans ZD1 and Pseudomonas oleovorans were able to grow on different pure substrates and agro-industrial wastes/wastewaters to produce various SCL- and/or MCL-PHA-rich SCPs. Low doses of MCL-fatty acids (i.e., PHA intermediates) efficiently suppressed the growth of aquaculture pathogens. Moreover, MCL-PHA-rich SCPs served as great food/energy sources for Artemia and improved Artemia's ability to fight pathogens. This study offers a win-win approach to address the challenges of wastes/wastewater management and feed supply faced by the aquaculture industry.

RESUMO

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)-a renewable and biodegradable polymer-is a promising alternative to nonbiodegradable synthetic plastics that are derived from petrochemicals. The methods currently employed for PHB production are costly, in part, due to the expensive cultivation feedstocks and the need to sterilize the culture medium, which is energy-intensive. This study investigates the feasibility of nonsterile PHB production from several saline organic wastes using a salt-tolerant strain, Zobellella denitrificans ZD1 (referred to as strain ZD1). Factors such as the pH, salinity, carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, nitrogen source, and electron acceptor that might affect the growth of strain ZD1 and its PHB production were determined. Our results showed successful nonsterile PHB production by growing the strain ZD1 on nonsterile synthetic crude glycerol, high-strength saline wastewater, and real municipal wastewater-activated sludge under saline conditions. The PHB production was significantly enhanced when the levels of salts and nitrate-nitrogen in the culture medium were increased. This study suggested a promising low-cost nonsterile PHB production strategy from organic wastes using strain ZD1.
