RESUMO

The microbial contamination of reused disposable insulin syringes and bottles was studied. Fourteen patients, aged 16-64 years, took part in the study. 50 syringes and 52 bottles were examined for sterility at different stages of use. Twelve (24%) syringes and 4 (8%) bottles were found to be contaminated by micro-organisms, although only in low numbers. The micro-organisms recovered belonged to the normal skin flora of man.

RESUMO

The routines followed and the equipment used by hospital staff when handling antineoplastic drugs were studied. A questionnaire was sent via the hospital pharmacies to hospital wards which administered antineoplastic drugs at least once a week. The answers received from 430 wards indicate a good understanding and awareness of the risks. Efforts had been made to protect the personnel from potential adverse effects. Efforts had been made to protect the personnel from potential adverse effects from the medications prepared or administered. There was, however, still a shortage of protective equipment such as ventilated cabinets. Existing cabinets were often not used and maintained in a proper manner. On the basis of the responses to the questionnaire, it may be concluded that there is still a need for further evaluation of the routines used in the practical handling of antineoplastic agents in hospital wards.

RESUMO

Eye drops, injection solutions and infusion fluids in-use were collected from the various wards of an animal hospital and tested for sterility. Medicines from the stationary wards showed a contamination frequency of 17.5%, whereas 62% of those from the ambulatory ward were contaminated. The veterinarians who, as regards the handling of medicines, often have to work under extraordinary conditions must be observant of the risks of handling and keeping sterile medicines in an inconvenient way. This is especially important in ambulatory practice.
