RESUMO

The results of γ-glutamyl carboxylase gene rs2592551 polymorphism determining in 170 patients with ischemic atherothrombotic stroke and 124 subjects without acute cerebrovascular disease (control group) have been evaluated. Obtained results revealed that rs2592551 polymorphism was related to ischemic stroke in Ukrainian population. The risk for this disease in patients with T/T genotype was higher than in major C-allele carriers (odds ratio (OR) = 3.117; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.016-9.566; P = 0.047). After dividing patients into subgroups, formed by the presence of certain risk factors for atherosclerosis, similar association has been established for women and non-smokers. At the same time, the heterozygous genotype (C/T) in females had significantly protective effect against ischemic stroke development when compared to C/C and T/T genotypes (OR = 0.460; 95% CI 0.213-0.994; P = 0.048). Statistical significance of these results persisted even after adjustment for age, body mass index, smoking and hypertension.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of gene polymorphisms Arg389Gly ADRß1 gene and T393C gene GNAS1 on the level of heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) in hypertensive patients according to body mass index (BMI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study involved 166 patients with hypertension and 90 healthy individuals. Patients of the main group was divided according to BMI into three subgroups: I subgroup--with normal body weight, II subgroup--overweight, II subgroup--obesity. Gene polymorphism is determined using polymerase chain reaction and subsequent analysis of restriction fragments. RESULTS: Patients from subgroups II and III, who had presence of genotypes Arg389Arg, Arg389Gly, had higher HR, SBP than in patients with genotype Gly389Gly (p = 0.010 and p = 0.001; p = 0.010 and p = 0.001, respectively). In the analysis of DBP, the dependence of its level of polymorphism Arg389Gly of ADRß1 gene was found only in I subgroup (p < 0.001). During the analysis of polymorphism T393C of GNAS1 gene only in patients from III subgroup was found a higher heart rate in patients with T393T genotype relatively to C393C genotype, but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.191). CONCLUSION: There is a direct correlation between HR and SBP in hypertensive patients with overweight and obesity from polymorphism Arg389Gly of ADRß1 gene, in hypertensive patients with normal body weight from this polymorphism depends DBP. Clinical manifestations of hypertension do not depend on polymorphism T393C of GNAS1 gene.

RESUMO

We evaluated the efficacy of spectral and color Doppler sonography as a screening procedure for intraocular tumors. Thirty patients who had intraocular tumors were included in the study. Abnormal Doppler shifts were demonstrated 19 of 20 patients with choroidal malignant melanomas, especially at the base of the tumors. The average maximum systolic blood flow velocity in the vessels of these tumors was 17 +/- 6.8 cm/sec (14 to 28 cm/sec). In one of the choroidal metastasis, blood vessels were seen around the lesion with a 14-cm/sec maximum peak systolic velocity. Intratumoral vascularity could not be demonstrated in the other tumors. Spectral and color Doppler imaging is a relatively new and promising modality in the management of intraocular tumors and may help to provide a more precise preoperative histological diagnosis noninvasively; however, long-term follow-up is needed.

RESUMO

Experiments were conducted on rabbits to study some indices of energy metabolism in arteries and veins under conditions of chronic epinephrine intoxication. Reduced intensity of oxygen consumption, increased intensity of lactic acid production, and reduced content of macroergic phosphates (ATP, phosphocreatine) were revealed in the walls of the arteries studied. Disorders of energy metabolism in veins were either less marked (portal vein) or absent (vena cava posterior). The revealed decrease of the intensity of energy metabolism in the arterial wall is considered to be among the possible mechanisms of the development of Monckeberg's arteriosclerosis.

RESUMO

Acute tuberculous intoxication in rabbits was accompanied by impairment of energy metabolism in the vessel walls: lower intensity of oxidative processes and higher activity of glycolysis. In the arteries which are vessels highly sensitive to sclerotic affections the observed metabolic disorders were much more pronounced than in the veins which are vessels resistant to angiosclerosis.

RESUMO

An experimental study in rabbits examined the intensity of oxygen consumption by strips of thoracic and abdominal aortas, pulmonary and common carotid arteries, posterior caval and portal veins after 5, 15, 30, 60 and 120 days of cholesterol feeding. A biphasic pattern of changes was demonstrated in oxygen consumption by the vascular wall under experimental atherosclerosis. An increase in Qo2 was followed by a decrease of the intensity of oxygen consumption. The duration and magnitude of each phase was dependent on baseline oxygen consumption by the vascular wall, on total duration of cholesterol feeding and the doses administered.
