Kansas Extended Care Permit III Providers: A descriptive study.

Purpose Forty-two states to date have passed legislation to expanded the role of dental hygienists for improved access to basic oral health services for underserved populations. Recent legislative changes in the state of Kansas have created the Extended Care Permit (ECP) I, II, and III designations. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of registered dental hygienists in Kansas holding ECP III certificates.Methods Secondary data analysis was performed utilizing data collected from an ECP provider survey conducted in 2021. Dental hygienists in Kansas holding an Extended Care Permit III (n=88) were sent a 39-item electronic survey and informed consent was obtained prior to beginning the survey. Descriptive data analyses consisted of frequency distributions and percentages. Inferential data analysis consisted of Fisher's Exact and Chi-Square tests to evaluate associations between ECP III demographics, practice characteristics, and services provided.Results A total of 22 responses were received for a 25% response rate. The majority of the respondents (77%) were employed by a Safety Net Clinic. The practice settings reporting the highest percentage of ECP III services during the period of data collection were school-based settings, using portable equipment (68%). No associations were found between ECP III personal and practice characteristics and the provision of services specific to the ECP III permit.Conclusion Results suggest that a low percentage of ECP III permit holders are providing ECP III-specific services. Considering these findings and the outcomes of previous studies, there is speculation that barriers continue to exist that prevent permit holders from performing ECP III-specific services and providing dental hygiene services to the fullest extent of an ECP license.

'One student might get one opportunity and then the next student won't get anything like that': Inequities in Australian career education and recommendations for a fairer future.

Access to quality career advice is important for economic, personal and equity reasons, yet, in many countries around the world, career-education provision is of varying quality and quantity within school settings. Given the inconsistencies in career-education resourcing and provision, what is not clearly understood is how students from low socioeconomic status (low SES) backgrounds experience career-education provision and the extent to which it shapes their post-school futures. Drawing on Australian research, this paper explores the career-education experiences of high-school students from low SES backgrounds. Bourdieu's tools of field, habitus and capital are used as a theoretical framework to understand how career education can influence students' imagining and achieving their career goals. The findings reported in this paper contribute nuanced understandings of career education to students from low SES backgrounds and recommends how all students can benefit from an embedded approach to career education in schools.

Self-Assessment: A Review of the Literature and Pedagogical Strategies for Its Promotion in Dental Education.

PURPOSE: In response to several publications drawing attention to self-assessment and revised Commission on Dental Accreditation standards that state graduates should possess and demonstrate the ability to self-assess, dental hygiene and pre-doctoral dental programs find themselves searching for ways in which to incorporate self-assessment practices into the curriculum. Research indicates that students are often not familiar with self-assessment strategies nor are they effective at self-assessment upon entering professional programs. Therefore, students must be taught strategies to self-assess and be given opportunities to practice and refine these skills. Opportunities to develop and demonstrate self-assessment skills can be incorporated across the curriculum at the classroom level and at the global level. Both the A.T. Still University Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry utilize a capstone portfolio project to incorporate self-assessment throughout the curriculum. By combining artifacts from their dental and dental hygiene school experience with reflective writing essays, students can demonstrate attainment of program competencies. As more faculty members and students become involved and engaged in assessment strategies such as portfolios, they are also gaining a greater appreciation for the value of self-assessment.

Fifteen years of portfolio assessment of dental hygiene student competency: lessons learned.

PURPOSE: Adoption of portfolio assessment in the educational environment is gaining attention as a means to incorporate self-assessment into the curriculum and to use evidence to support learning outcomes and to demonstrate competency. Portfolios provide a medium for students to demonstrate and document their personal and professional growth across the curriculum. The purpose of this literature review is to discuss the drivers for portfolio education, the benefits to both students and program faculty/administrators, the barriers associated with portfolio use, and suggested solutions that have been determined through several years of "lessons learned." The University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry, Division of Dental Hygiene department has been utilizing portfolio assessment for over 15 years and has collected data related to portfolio performance since 2001. Results from correlational statistics calculated on the 312 dental hygiene students that graduated from 2001 to 2013 demonstrate a positive and significant relationship between portfolio performance and overall GPA as well as portfolio performance and NBDHE scores.

Development and implementation of online National Board Dental Examination Review Courses.

Failure on the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Parts I and II has troubling consequences for dental students, faculty members, and school administrators. Since the NBDE is a high-stakes exam for all involved, it is important to determine effective strategies to help students prepare. The purpose of this article is to describe the development and implementation of online NBDE Parts I and II Review Courses by the faculty and administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. The courses are taught by faculty members who are content experts. By utilizing distance technology, students in any geographic location can review the material at the time, place, and pace that are most convenient. Early outcomes show that 592 students from thirty-two states have participated in the courses since they were first offered in 2010-11. In post-course evaluations, students report that participation in the courses encouraged them to spend more time preparing for the exam and that the associated PowerPoint slides/handouts provided structure for their review. The literature suggests that multiple modalities are most effective in preparing for the NBDE. These online review courses can serve as a beneficial component of a student's preparation regimen.
