RESUMO

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is an anionic surfactant, which has a wide range of usage in the health sector and in dental pharmaceutical products, especially in toothpastes. The objective of this review was to investigate the effects of SLS containing dentifrices on oral and periodontal health, possible side effects, and its benefits. A thorough literature search was done using databases of PubMed and Google Scholar and finally, 40 articles were included in the study. This narrative review revealed the sources of discrepancy and conflicting results regarding the impact of SLS on oral cavity as well as a lack of sufficient evidence in most topics. Hence, the evidence suggests improved drug bioavailability when used as a solubilizer, improved plaque control, and reduction in bad breath. On the other hand, SLS can serve as a risk indicator of prolonged oral wound healing time, recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

RESUMO

Introduction: The sella turcica is one of the important landmarks of lateral cephalometry, which is used in orthodontics for the diagnosis, treatment plan, and evaluation of skeletal development and maturity. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the dimensions and morphology of sella turcica with the long-face growth pattern and people with an open bite. This study also examines the relationship between sella turcica bridging (STB) and the vertical growth pattern. Methods: As many as 153 radiographs were analyzed using the Romexis software, considering the basal, gonial, and FMA angles to determine the vertical growth pattern of the face. The basal angle was also used to check for an open bite. Of these patients, 80 had a long vertical face growth pattern, and 73 had a normal face growth pattern. The four landmarks of tuberculum sellae, dorsum sellae, sellae floor, and posterior clinoid were determined on the cephalograms to measure the length, depth, and anteroposterior diameter of the sella turcica. Results: In this study, it was found that the chance of developing a long face in people with partial and complete bridging is 8.37 and 1.92, respectively. An increase in the length of the sella turcica for one unit decreases the chance of a long face, and as the depth of the sella turcica increases, the chance of a long face increases. Conclusions: STB is frequently seen in people with long faces. However, this finding should be considered in relation to other diagnostic parameters. The shorter the length and higher the depth of sella turcica, the higher the chance of developing a long face.

RESUMO

Background: Increasing antibiotic resistance to pathogenic microorganisms (Streptococci) has led scientists around the world to turn to medicinal plants. In this study, the effects of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Zataria multiflora on the in vitro growth of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis have been considered and compared with 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, the inhibitory growth zone was accessed by the disc diffusion method after 48 h of incubation at 37 C. To find out the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of treatments, colony counts of cultured bacteria on nutrient agar have been considered at serial dilution at 1/2-1/1024 dilution rates. An independent t-test was used to compare the antibacterial effects of extracts while the level of significance of was considered to be 5% (P < 0.05). Results: The inhibitory growth zones of aqueous and alcoholic extracts on S. mutans were 26.8 mm and 35.8 mm, respectively, whereas growth zones for S. sanguis were considered as 25.8 mm and 33.2 mm, sequentially. Comparisons showed better effects of alcohol compared to aqueous extract (P > 0.05). The MIC and MBC assessments showed the same results (P > 0.05). In all comparisons, the effects of 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash were significantly better than both Z. multiflora aqueous and alcoholic extracts (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The different solvents may have contributed to the better effects of an alcoholic to aqueous extract of Z. multiflora on the growth of both bacteria. These two extracts could be used for early inhibition of the growth of the planktonic phase, as well as for better oral taste after chlorhexidine applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of lung adenocarcinoma metastasizing to the pancreas is overall rare and can histologically imitate primary pancreatic ductal carcinoma (PDAC). CASE REPORT: This is a case report of a 70-year-old female with a history of surgically resected right lung adenocarcinoma presenting for routine follow up without symptoms. CT scans revealed a pancreatic cystic mass with ductal dilatation that was sampled via endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) and thought to be a primary pancreatic mucinous neoplasm with high grade dysplasia suspicious for carcinoma based on smear cytology. On repeat EUS-FNA and biopsy (FNB) with additional immunohistochemical testing for lung adenocarcinoma markers thyroid transcription factor (TTF1) and Napsin A and molecular testing, the lesion was identified as a metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma with an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR L858R) mutation; subsequently, the patient underwent targeted therapy that yielded an almost complete response. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case in English literature of a lung adenocarcinoma metastasis to the pancreas mimicking a pancreatic primary neoplasm and highlights the potential pitfalls of EUS-FNA for the diagnosis of certain metastases to the pancreas.

RESUMO

The synchronous diagnosis of two or more primary malignancies in a patient is overall rare. This is a case report of a 70-year-old female with a history of skin squamous cell carcinoma presenting with occult hematochezia. Colonoscopy and biopsy results confirmed a microsatellite stable (MMS) adenocarcinoma in the ascending colon, and subsequent computed tomography (CT) scans identified a 3.2 cm right colonic mass and a 5.0 cm mass in the pancreatic body. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) confirmed the presence of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The patient underwent neo-adjuvant FOLFIRINOX (folinic acid, fluorouracil, irinotecan and oxaliplatin) chemotherapy prior to the simultaneous distal pancreatectomy and right hemicolectomy for both pancreatic and colonic tumors. The pathology diagnoses included moderately differentiated pancreatic ductal carcinoma (PDAC) with histiocyte-like features (tumor stage: ypT3N1M0) and moderately differentiated colonic adenocarcinoma, intestinal type (tumor stage: ypT3N0M0). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case of synchronous primary colonic adenocarcinoma and PDAC in the English literature.

RESUMO

Barrett's esophagus (BE) is a well-known premalignant condition that can be associated with the development of dysplasia and adenocarcinoma. In the past, esophagectomy was the standard treatment for patients with BE with high grade dysplasia (HGD) and early cancer (EC). However, esophagectomy is not necessarily the only treatment response to HGD and EC anymore. Over the past decade, a number of endoscopic therapies have been developed for management of BE. These include endoscopic mucosal resection, thermal ablation techniques that use laser irradiation, multipolar electrocoagulation, argon plasma coagulation, photodynamic therapy, and the recently developed cryotherapy and radiofrequency ablation.

RESUMO

Superexcited states (SESs) of oxygen molecules and their neutral dissociation processes have been studied both experimentally and theoretically using intense femtosecond laser. We find that at the laser intensity of approximately 2 x 10(14) W/cm(2), ultrashort laser pulse causes neutral dissociation of oxygen molecule by way of SESs. The dissociation products are the excited neutral oxygen atoms, which are observed through fluorescence spectroscopy. Laser power dependence of the fluorescence intensity shows that each molecule effectively absorbs an average of ten laser photons. The total energy absorbed is sufficient to stimulate the molecule to many of the SESs. The effect is equivalent to single photon excitation in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) region by synchrotron radiation (SR). Morse potential energy curves (PECs) are constructed for the SESs of O(2) molecules. In light of the PECs, predissociation mechanism is proposed for the neutral dissociation. Quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations show that the predissociation time is as short as 100 fs, which is consistent with our experimental measurement using ultrafast pump-probe technique.

RESUMO

The perception of itch in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is not characterized. Patients with primary biliary cirrhosis who were members of the PBCers Organization were invited to participate in an on-line survey addressing certain characteristics of their itch. Patients used their own words in the questions that asked for descriptions. A total of 238 subjects responded to the survey; of these, 231 were women, and 165 (69%) reported itch. One hundred and twenty-four patients from the 165 (75%) reported that itch preceded the diagnosis of primary biliary cirrhosis. A total of 58 from 164 (35%) respondents described their itch as "bugs crawling". Fifty-seven of 88 (64.7%) subjects reported that something cool relieved their itch, and 69 of 112 (61.6%) reported that heat worsened it. One hundred and seven of 164 (65.2%) respondents reported that the itch was worse at night. The most commonly prescribed medications were antihistamines and cholestyramine, and the most common type of medication reported as being associated with relief was antihistamine drugs. There was no systematic approach to the evaluation and treatment of itch in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Education on the subject of itch in primary biliary cirrhosis is warranted.
