RESUMO
The cases of nine children with pseudomembranous enterocolitis, five of whom died, are reported here. Six had prior antibiotic therapy, and in eight there were other diseases present that were considered to contribute to the development of this disease. Awareness of this condition, which requires aggressive medical and surgical management, is discussed.

We report on a 12-year-old boy who developed facial paralysis secondary to acute parotitis. Awareness of this rare complication is emphasised. Lower motor neuron lesion of the facial nerve due to parotid enlargement is extremely rare in the absence of underlying neoplasia.

Bleeding from oesophageal varices accounts for most of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in children (4). Repeat injection sclerotherapy proved to be a practical and effective method to control the bleeding and obliterate the varices (5, 8). This report describes a 13-year-old girl with portal hypertension who developed massive rectal variceal bleeding after repeat injection sclerotherapy of oesophageal varices.

Two young children presented with acute small bowel obstruction associated with closed loop ileal obstruction caused by Meckel's diverticulum and vitello-intestinal duct remnant respectively. In each, resection of the vitelline remnant and ischaemic ileum with primary small bowel anastomosis resulted in good recovery.

Silver sulphadiazine has been used as a topical antimicrobial agent in a large group of children with burns and scalds. Four developed neutropenia and two an erythema multiforme rash which were thought to be due to sulphadiazine sensitivity. To assess the extent of sulphadiazine absorption in children, the urinary excretion was measured in a group of 8 patients with a mean area of injury of 13 per cent BSA. The mean urinary concentration of sulphadiazine was 31.8 mg/l.

This report describes a major life-threatening haemorrhage in a 10-year-old child, following an intraduct rupture of an intrahepatic aneurysm of the right hepatic artery. The onset of the gastro-intestinal bleed was preceded by trauma which may have contributed to the rupture of the pre-existing aneurysm, although the documented initial injury was apparently slight. The bleeding was successfully controlled after ligation of the right hepatic artery.
