RESUMO

Background: Cardiovascular care units are among the most crucial departments in any healthcare system. In these units, nurses play the most pivotal roles, and the quality of nursing care is essential; missing certain aspects of care can have irreversible adverse effects on patient health. This qualitative study aims to investigate the factors influencing Missed Nursing Care (MNCs) based on the experiences of nurses and patients in cardiovascular care units. Materials and Methods: This qualitative study utilized the conventional content analysis approach to explore the factors affecting MNCs in cardiovascular care units. Data were collected between December 2021 and September 2022 through in-depth, semi-structured individual interviews with 11 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis followed the five-step method proposed by Graneheim and Lundman. Results: The analysis revealed five main themes: nurse's job characteristics, work-life conflict, nurse's professional competence, the cardiac work environment atmosphere, and organizational management. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that authorities should consider factors such as understanding the occupational characteristics of nurses when assigning them to cardiovascular care units, providing solutions to mitigate work-life conflicts for nurses, enhancing nurses' professional competence, improving the working environment for nurses, and enhancing the performance and skills of organizational managers.

BACKGROUND: Job satisfaction of nurses is an important concept in nursing profession because it influences nursing care. Head nurses play a crucial role in the job satisfaction of nurse staffs. The current study, therefore, aimed to investigate the effect of Head Nurse Empowerment Program (HNEP) on job satisfaction of nurses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted at two educational hospitals in Rasht, Iran. Of 160 staff nurses who were working in eight medical-surgical wards and two Intensive Care Units, 60 were recruited using simple random sampling method. The samples were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The HNEP was applied to promote the management skills among nurses, which included technical, communicational, perceptional, and diagnostic skills. The data were collected using nurses' job satisfaction questionnaire and analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon Singed Ranks tests. P < 0.05 was set as the significance level. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the job satisfaction of nurse staff within the experimental group on comparing pre- and post-HNEP phases [78 (65.50) vs. 78 (65.50); P < 0.001]. The job satisfaction also differed between the control and experimental groups [60 (82.25) vs. 128.5 (51.75); P < 0.001]. However, no significant difference [62 (78.75) vs. 60 (82.25); P = 0.129] was found within the control group. The number of satisfied nurse staffs increased in the experimental group from approximately 25% to 76% after HNEP. CONCLUSIONS: The HNEP can be used as a promoting tool in the nursing profession. Increasing head nurses' management skills can result in job satisfaction among the staff nurses.

RESUMO

Harlequin fetus is a rare and the most severe form of the congenital ichthyosis with an autosomal recessive inheritance. Incidence of the disease is nearly 1 in 3,00,000 live births. The disease might be lethal at birth and the affected babies are often premature. Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) is marked by severe keratinized and alligator-like horned skin. The present study reports a new case with HI and adds to the collective knowledge of this rare skin disorder. HI has been linked to mutation in the ABCA12 gene; therefore, genetic counseling and mutation screening of this gene should be considered.
