RESUMO

The outbreak of COVID-19 resulted in numerous jurisdictions instituting "shelter-in-place'' orders (SPOs). While designed to restrict or impede normal levels of social proximity, SPOs altered the way or degree to which workers interact with each other and have likely imposed a toll on employee well-being. The authors exploit the temporal and geographic variation in U.S. SPOs to investigate their effect on loneliness among online workers. Variation in loneliness is then linked to worker behavior in a simple two-person, collaborative task (a framed stag hunt). The analysis reveals a strong positive relationship between SPOs and loneliness on average, peaking during the wave associated with the most prolonged duration of isolation. SPOs disproportionately impacted workers in occupations not substantially involving teamwork or collaboration. As reported loneliness increases, the probability of an individual collaborating in a simple interactive workplace scenario decreases significantly. In the final survey wave, SPOs are scarcer, loneliness subsides, and cooperative behavior increases dramatically.

RESUMO

This paper reports the results of an experiment involving text-messaging and emojis in laboratory trust games executed on mobile devices. Decomposing chat logs, I find that trust increases dramatically with the introduction of emojis to one-shot games, while reciprocation increases only modestly. Skin tones embedded in emojis impact sharing and resulting gains-to the benefit of some and detriment to others. Both light and dark skin players trust less on receipt of a dark skin tone emoji-suggestive of statistical discrimination. In this way, computer-mediated communication leads to reduced gains for dark-skinned persons. These results highlight the complex social judgment that motivates trust in an anonymous counterpart.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: P2Y(1) is a purine receptor that triggers platelet aggregation. Its inhibition was studied in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) receiving standard anti-platelet therapy. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Blood samples from 10 patients on aspirin therapy (ASA, 80 mg·day(-1) ) were withdrawn before and 24 h after the administration of 450 mg clopidogrel (ASA/C) and were anti-coagulated with citrate or hirudin/PPACK in the presence or absence of the P2Y(1 ) inhibitor MRS2179 (M, 100 µM). Platelet responses to ADP (2.5 µM) and TRAP (2.5 µM), and collagen-induced thrombosis under flow conditions were analysed. KEY RESULTS: Compared with ASA, ASA + M strongly inhibited ADP-induced peak platelet aggregation (88%), late aggregation (84%), P-selectin expression (85%) and α(IIb) ß(3) activation (62%) (28%, 65%, 70% and 51% inhibition, respectively, for ASA/C vs. ASA). ASA + M also inhibited platelet/monocyte and platelet/neutrophil conjugate formation by 69% and 71% (57% and 59% for ASA/C vs. ASA). In TRAP-activated blood, ASA + M unexpectedly inhibited α(IIb) b(3) activation by 30%. In blood perfused in collagen-coated glass capillaries (shear rate of 1500 s(-1) ), ASA/C prevented thrombus growth beyond 5 min in relation to thrombus fragments embolization. ASA + M with or without clopidogrel completely prevented thrombus formation. Finally, ex vivo addition of MRS2179 and ASA to the blood of healthy donors markedly blocked thrombus formation on collagen in flow conditions, in contrast to ASA plus the P2Y(12) inhibitor 2-MeSAMP. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Through particularly efficient complementarities with ASA to inhibit platelet activation and thrombus formation, the inhibition of P2Y(1) in the blood of patients with CAD appears to play a more important role than previously anticipated.

RESUMO

The efficacy of specially programmed physical and health education on the motor development of first-grade pupils was analyzed in a sample of 633 children aged 7 years. Pupils have been divided into control group consisting of 140 boys and 137 girls attending standard program of physical and health education, and in experimental group consisting of 184 boys and 172 girls attending specially programmed physical and health education. A battery of 12 motor tests has been used on two occasions separated by nine-month interval. Analysis of time-changes (by using the model of differences) pointed to the significantly greater quantitative changes in experimental group compared with control group of children. In boys, the changes are obtained for the tests of aerobic endurance, static strength, flexibility, speed, explosive strength of sprint and throw type, and equilibrium, and in girls, they are for aerobic endurance, static strength, explosive strength of throw and sprint type, flexibility, repetitive strength, speed, and equilibrium.

RESUMO

The subjects of this research is the role played by the morphological structure in the process of access to the lexicon. Although a lot of research has been conducted on this topic, experimental data on this role remains inconsistent. To appreciate the issue, the task of lexical decision is used with verbal material constituted by prefixed or pseudo-prefixed verbs as well as visually introduced pseudo-verbs. The nature of the radical (verb, noun or verb and noun) constitutes a specific factor yielding three types of prefixed structure (prefix-radical verb, prefix-radical noun, prefix-radical potentially noun or verb). Two types of pseudo-prefixed structures are studied in function of the nature of the pseudo-radical (existing or imaginary word). Subjects are submitted to two tests: a lexical decision test for the complete set of verbal material; a second test (to be taken subsequently) in which they are asked to check from a list the words they believe they have seen on the screen in the first test. Results indicate an effective morphological structure and that the processing of prefixed verbs is done according to the nature of the radical. Verbs with radicals that could be verbs and nouns are processed faster than those for which the radical is a verb. The second test also tends to indicate that the morphological structure is taken into account, and especially that the radical is activated at a certain point in the processing (certain radicals, if presented separately, are checked as being present in the first test where only the prefixed items containing them were present). Results obtained with pseudo-verbs show an important role played by the prefix in the identification of morphologically complex items. These results only match partially the Taft & Forster Model (1975). Illustrating the role played by the nature of the radical allows, to a certain degree, reconciling contradictory results in the literature. In fact, it is demonstrated that the different results from various experiences can be explained if this factor is taken into account. The number of prefixed items of each type (defined by the nature of the radical) can thus explain why certain studies reflect differences between morphologically simple and complex words and other discard them.

RESUMO

An upstream control region in the long terminal repeat (LTR) of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) includes a potential negative regulatory element (NRE1). Cotransfecting multimers of a sequence spanning this element with an LTR-CAT construct produced an increase in chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) activity in Jurkat and HepG2 cells, providing further evidence and support for the existence of an NRE. In screening experiments aimed at identifying those factors that regulate HIV-1 transcription through interactions with the NRE1 region, we isolated a cDNA for NF-IL6. Previous studies have shown that NF-IL6 is a key nuclear factor that activates gene expression in response to interleukin 6. By methylation interference analysis, we have localized the NF-IL6 binding site within the NRE1 region and found that it overlaps an E box that has previously been implicated as the binding element for a negative regulator of HIV-1 expression. Through a database search, we identified an additional consensus binding sequence for NF-IL6 in the LTR of many HIV-1 variants and found that over this sequence, purified NF-IL6 can produce an extended footprint that overlaps one of the binding sites for NF-kappa B. A product of the nf-il6 gene activated transcription from several LTR-CAT constructs in transient transfection assays. Thus, NF-IL6 could play a central role in the control of HIV-1 gene expression and this protein might be a key mediator in signaling pathways where HIV-1 is activated by interleukin 6.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction is sometimes seen in premature neonates who are fed early and subsequently suffer from digestive intolerance for several weeks. PATIENTS: Seven premature babies (mean gestational age: 30.5 weeks, mean birthweight: 950 g) suffered from abdominal distension and failure to pass stools at a mean age of 2.5 days (extremes: 1 to 6 days); 2 of them also had vomiting. X-ray examination showed dilated loops of bowel throughout the abdomen without obstructive changes; barium or Gastrografin studies demonstrated inertia of the colon without obstructive changes or abrupt changes in caliber. Histological examination of enteric nerve cells in 2 cases showed normal maturation. Parenteral nutrition was necessary in all patients for 30 to 78 days (mean: 47), followed by continuous enteral feeding for 24 to 48 days (mean: 37). Septicemia complicated parenteral nutrition in 4 babies and was responsible for the death of 1 of them. Normal evacuation of stools occurred between day 27 and day 91 (mean day 46) allowing normal enteral feeding. All 6 patients, now aged 2.5 to 8 years (mean 3.5 years) are in good health, and have no digestive problems. CONCLUSIONS: Immaturity of intestinal motility may occur in some premature neonates suffering from intestinal ileus. Parenteral nutrition may be necessary for several weeks, but spontaneous recovery is usual. This transient intestinal pseudo-obstruction of premature babies is different from the classical chronic pseudo-obstruction for which surgery is often needed.

RESUMO

Extracted intact human teeth (n = 4) were treated for 30 days by three protocols: Home 1 (Proxigel, n = 4) for 8 hours daily, Home 2 (White & Bright, n = 4) for 24 hours with 3 minutes of stannous fluoride gel, or an Office protocol (n = 4) using 30% hydrogen peroxide (Superoxol) warmed by a high-intensity light while the controls remained untreated. "Home" bleaching agents contain approximately 10% carbamide peroxide. After treatment, the coronal surfaces were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) at 2000 power magnification, and the surface topography was measured by a profilometer. The SEM photomicrographs of the controls and office-treated groups were similar to previously reported descriptions, while the home bleached surfaces appeared similar to each other. Profilometric analysis was used to examine surface roughness and surface waviness. Mean surface roughness in microns was: control, 1.9; Home 1, 0.6; Home 2, 0.9; and Office, 0.6. Surface waviness was ranked control > office > Home 1 = Home 2. Enamel surface alterations were evident after the three bleaching methods. The differences between the office and home-treated surfaces were unrelated to the pH of the bleaching agents.

RESUMO

The High Risk Adolescent Trauma Prevention Program is situated in a teaching hospital setting, where adolescents who are considered to be high risk-takers tour a shock trauma unit. Results from a pretest-posttest longitudinal evaluation design with 351 adolescent participants indicated marked changes in participants attitudes toward driving after drinking, riding with someone who has been drinking and preventing a friend from driving after drinking. These changes in attitudes are still evident, though with some decline in magnitude, after twelve months.

RESUMO

Monoclonal antibodies were prepared to nuclear nonhistone proteins from a 2-aminoacetyl fluorine-induced transplantable rat hepatocellular carcinoma. These antibodies recognized a total of six distinct antigens as revealed by molecular weight analysis. Studies of antigen specificity with respect to various tissues, tumors, cultured cells, and oncodevelopmental stages indicated that these nuclear species could be divided into two categories. Four antigens were classified as tumor related since they were significantly enriched in tumor tissue as compared to tissues of the normal adult rat. The remaining two antigens were detected only in tumors and transformed cells; one, only in certain hepatomas. Thus, these antigens were classified as tumor specific. As an initial step toward elucidating the function of these proteins, each antigen was isolated by immunoaffinity chromatography, radioiodinated in situ, and analyzed for the ability to bind DNA. Three antigens were positive for DNA binding, and one of these was selectively released from tumor nuclei with the transcriptionally active chromatin upon digestion with micrococcal nuclease. The implications of these results for the possible functional contribution of the six tumor antigens to transformation is discussed.

RESUMO

Eosinophilia is a common finding in premature babies during the neonatal period (75%). It has a variable correlation with several factors that may influence it: gestational age, birth weight, time required to regain birthweight, neonatal stress, caesarean birth, formula feeding, endotracheal intubation, positive pressure ventilation, parenteral nutrition, umbilical catheterization, blood transfusions, antibiotics, phototherapy, sex, neutropenia and sepsis. The possible mechanisms are discussed: resolution of a stress, anabolic state, reaction to antigens, normal granulopoietic maturation, transplacental transfer of a factor stimulating the eosinophil synthesis.

RESUMO

The authors envisage the hypothesis of an embryofetal intoxication by a beta-blocker (B-), sotalol, taken by the mother, not hypertensive, during all her pregnancy (160 mg/day). The fullterm newborn, hypotrophic and hypothermic, is suffering from facial dysmorphy with microcephaly, and present a severe tracheal stenosis associated with cardiopathy and important rhythm disorders: bradycardia and permanent bigeminate ventricular extrasystoles for three days. Course is fatal at five months old. On the occasion of this probable intoxication, a brief recall about pharmacology and physiopathology of transplacental passage of B- during pregnancy is done. Then, are enumerated the experimental repercussion of B blockers and their more often theoretical than real undesirable effects, on the fetus. Sotalol is possibly a B-specially aggressive, when it is prescribed abusively, on account of its excellent diffusibility and of its high tissular impregnation.
